2 claims. (o1. isf-176),A
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes and more particularly to vwhat might beA termed a reversible'brush primarily intended f or applying posters; paint, whitewash Vor the like, or for `use by paper Yhangers for applying paste, although it will be appreciated that such a brush may be used for various other purposes. v
The principal object oi" the present invention resides in the provision of a brush having a head portion or member Vto which a handle may be" attached and a readily removable andreversible bristle carrying portion or member adapted to be connected to the head portion.
`Aiurther object consists in the provision of novel means whereby the bristle carrying portion or member may be connected to or removed from the head portion by a sliding movement of one relative to the other and means' for securingthe two portions or members against said sliding movement and in operable relation.
With the above and other objects in View, which willappear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of con-Y struction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood thatv such changes maybe made as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:-V
Fig. l is a side elevation with parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 oi Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of thehead portion or member.
In the drawing A denotes generally the head portion or member and B the bristle carrying portion or member. The head portion is of relatively elongated shape, as shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, and is provided with the diagonally extending opening 1 in which the end of the handle 2 is inserted. An elongated recess 3 is formed in the lower or bottom edge of the head portion A and extending over this recess is a plate 4 secured to the head by means of the screws 5 or other suitable fastening means. The plate is provided centrally with the threaded opening 6 and on opposite sides of this opening are the slots '7 terminating at the ends in enlarged openings designated 8. As shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the plate 4 is of such a lengthand width asto entend beyond the ends and sideY edges of the recess 3 and theinner'iace ofthe plate will be spaced from the inner surface of therecess for a purpose which will be later apparent.
The bristle carrying portion or member includes an velongated block 9 aroundwhich" the bristles 10 are positioned and secured in place by means of the band or strip 11 attached to the block by means of the nails 12 or' other'suitable astenings. As shown more particularly in Figq2- of the drawing Athe block 9 is anged at litsnpper end'asy shown at 13 to engage the bottom surface of the head portion or member A and the block 9 is of a length equal to the length of the head A with the flanges 13 extended to a width corresponding to the width of the'lower surface of the head. Threaded through the block A9 are the bolts 14 provided at .their upper ends with the heads 15 andsecured in proper position, by means of the nuts 16. As shown more particularly in Fig. 1` of the drawing the heads 15 of the bolts 14 are positioned above the upper surface of the block 9 a suihcient distance that the bolts 14 extend through the slots 7 in the plate 4 with the lower faces of the heads engaging the upper surface of the plate. The block 9 is secured to the head A, against sliding movement, by means of the'screw 17this screw extending through the block 9 and threaded into the opening 6 of the platev 4.
In brushes of the character adapted for use in applying posters, paint, whitewash, paste or the like, where the handle is connected to the brush at an angle one edgey of the brush wears away much quicker than the opposite edge and thereby the life oi the brush is ordinary lessened. To overcome this I have provided the brush having the reversible bristle carrying portion or member and if the bristle carrying portion or member is reversed at suitable intevals the bristles will wear evenly and the life of the brush will be extended. Normally when ready for use the bristle carrying portion or member B is connected to the head portion or member A, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When it is desired to reverse the bristle carrying portion the screw 17 is turned to remove the end thereof from the threaded opening 6 in the plate 4 and when this has been done the block 9, with the bristles 10 may be slid in either direction relative to the head A to position the heads 15 of the bolts 14 in alignment with the enlarged ends 8 of the slots 7. When in this position the heads 15 of `the bolts 14 may be withdrawn through the enlarged portions 8 and the bristle carrying portion or member reversed as an entirety. When reversed the heads 15 of the bolts 14 will be reinserted through the enlarged portions 8 of the slots 'l and the bristle carrying portion B slid relative to the head portion A to position the heads 15 of the bolts 14 intermediate the enlargements 8 of the slots '7 with the heads overlying and engaging the upper surface of the plate 4, as shown more particularly in Fig. land the heads positioned in the recess 3.
the members A and B are held againstvrelative sliding movement. It kwill thus be seen that I have provided novel means whereby (the bristle carrying member of a brush may be readily connected to or disconnected from the head portion to which the handle is connected and that such bristle carrying portion or member may be easily reversed in order to prolong the life ofthe brush.
Having fullyrdescribed my inventionl what I claim as new and desire *tov secure by Letters When thus positioned the screw 17 is rethreaded into the opening 6 andv a headed member adapted to be passed through Y the enlarged end of the slot in the plate, into the recess in the bottom edge of the head portion and moved into the slot by sliding movement of the` bristle carrying portion relative to the head por-4 tion, and means engageable through thebristle carrying portionand engageable with the plate carried by the head portion for preventing slid-` ing movement of the bristle carrying portion relav tive to the head portion. a headed member adapted to be passed through v 15 enlargement at one end, a bristle carrying porn the enlarged end of the slot in the plate, into the recessin the bottom edgeof the head portion and moved into the slot by slidingmovement of the bristle carrying portion relative to the head,l f
