Description

Feb. 5, 1935.
O. LOWRY DEVICE TO PREVENT MOUTH BREATHING AND SNORING Filed July 24, 1931 0?" NVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE DEVICE TO PREVENT MOUTH BREATHING AND SNORING Oliver Lowry; Meridian, Miss. Application July 24, 1931, Serial No. 552,949
1 Claim. '(01. 128-164 I of chin rest, so shaped and constructed to facilitate comfort to the user, snugly contact with the under edges of the lower jaw when the device is in the inner edge thereof whereby the device will readily clear the throat of the user and ward off through their mouths so that the discharges of the nasal cavities accumulate in an unhealthful.
manner giving rise to and aggravating obstructive and inflammatory conditions such as catarrh, laryngitis, etc.
My improvement comprises an extremely simple, cheaply constructed but thoroughly effective device for preventing breathing through the mouth, especially when the wearer of the device is sleeping, so that he will breathe in a natural manner through his nose and thereby prevent the sleeper snoring, and, as stated, prevent unhealthy discharges of the nasal cavities.
The device, of course, may be worn at any desired time to insure proper respiration and free breathing through the nose.
As disclosed by the drawing the improvement comprises a strap 1, designed to be arranged over the head and under the chin of the user. The ends of the strap are adjustably connected through the medium of a-buckle 2 provided with the usual tongue or gripping surface to engage the second end of the strap, so that the strap is adjustable in size, The sides of the strap pass through loops 3 on the outer face of an elastic head band 4. The head band is constructed from a single strip of elastic material and one of the ends of the saidband is provided with a plurality of spaced female catch elements 5 to be engaged by a male catch element 6 on the other installed for use, and one having a recess formed or second end of the band. In this manner it will be noted that the head band is also adjusted.
The strap 1 is preferably slidable through a loop '7 on the under face of a substantially heartshaped and concaved chin rest 8; The chin rest 5 is of elastic or like compressible material, or at least the inner cgncaved face thereofis of such material. Due to the fact the chin rest 8 is of heart-shape formatipn provides the chin rest with .a broadened rear edge portion 9 having a con- 10 caved recess 9', whereby when the chirr rest 8 is applied for use, the concaved recessportion is disposed in spaced confronting relation with the throat of the user and affordsl'comfort of the plate .to the throat. Furthermora'in view of the specific formation or structure of this chin rest, presents the same of reduced dimension from its rear edge to its forward extreme point, providing a plate of such reduced -;;dimension'and size'to i of the personwearing such plate, When the device is in applied position as disclosed by Figure 1 of the drawing the mouth of the user is held closed without discomfort, so that the user must necessarily breathe through his nose. This, as previously stated, prevents the snoring of the user when sleeping and insuresa natural respiration by breathing through the nose and also, as stated, will overcome: discharges from the nasal passages which enter the throat, stomach and frequently result in complicated diseases. It is to be noted incident to the particular and peculiar shape of the chin rest 8, the same affords an effective support for the lower jaw but does not interfere with the neck of the wearer of the harness noris the same brought into contact with any portion of the face of the wearer except the under surface of his chin.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A device for preventing mouth breathing and snoring comprising an elastic strap for disposition around the head of the user in the region of the forehead, a second strap disposed in crossing relation with the first-mentioned strap and having a running engagement with the latter at the points of crossing and adapted to extend over the head and in contact with the users temples, 1
cheeks and beneath the chin, and a chin rest plate of heart-shaped formation presenting the same with a broadened recessed rear edge portion, the latter-mentioned portion being disposed in' spaced confronting relation with respect to I the throat of the user, the recess formed-in the broadened edge of the heart-shaped chin rest being concaved, thereby affording clearance of the chin rest plate with the throat, a loop formed integral with theunder face of the chin rest plate I OLIVER LOWRY.
