The present invention relates to a brush which is chiefly adapted for the upkeep of shoes, furniture, floors or the like, and which, as compared with lmown brushes of this class, is principally characterized by the fact that the wax or other material with which the objects are to be coated is contained in the bristle backing of the brush, thus dispensing with the use of boxes or like receptacles for containing the wax, means being provided by which the wax will be always maintained at the level of the brush. This device affords a waxing brush in which the use of the wax and of the brush are combined in a single appliance, and permitting, under the effect of friction, to spread on a layer of wax which is then polished by the bristles of the brush.

The accompanying diagrammatic drawing shows by way of example various embodiments of the invention.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the brush.

Figure 2 is a similar view of a slightly modified form.

Figure 3 is a detail section of a modified form of wax holder.

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, showing a further modification of the wax holder.

In Figure 1, 1 represents a hand brush having a handle 2 and provided with bristles 3. The bristle backing is provided with an opening 4, the opening being at right angles to the bristles. The opening 4 is provided with a metal sleeve 5. Within the sleeve is mounted a polishing material holder 6, the holder being provided with a cake of wax 13. The top of the holder is provided with a bowed spring '7. The spring is so constructed that its outer edges are always in contact with the sleeve 5, thereby permitting frictionally retarded movement of the holder toward the bristle area and preventing an upward movement of the wax holder, when the brush is being used.

In Figure 2, 1 represents a hand brush having a handle 2 and provided with ordinary bristles 3 The bristle backing is provided with an opening at 4%. In the opening 4 is mounted a polishing material holder 6, the holder being provided with a cake of wax 13 The top of the holder is provided with a bowed spring 7, which is adapted to engage the wall of the opening, the spring permitting frictionally retarded movement of the holder toward the bristle area and preventing an upward movement of the wax holder, when the brush is being used.

Figure 3 shows another way of securing the cake of wax in the casing. The casing is formed with inwardly directed claws 9 which penetrate the wax cake 10.

Figure 4 shows a modified form of a waxcake holder. The casing 8' is provided with a downwardly extended pin 11, the pin being provided 5 with a head 12, said head being adapted to be lodged into the cake of wax.

When in use, the wax holder containing a cake of wax is placed in the opening. The wax holder is pushed down so that the lower surface of the wax is on or near a level with the ends of the bristles. As the brush is pushed over a surface which is being polished, the wax comes into contact with said surface, putting a coating thereon. The bristles then polish the coated portion. As the wax is used and a new application is necessary, the operator places his finger in the opening and presses the wax holder down to the desired level.

What is claimed is:-

1. A polishing brush having a brush backing, bristles extending from one face thereof, a block of polishing material mounted for movement in the brush backing at substantially right angles to the operative plane of the bristles, and spring means for holding the block of polishing material in the brush backing, said means permitting frictionallyretarded movement of the material toward the bristles and preventing movement of the material in the opposite direction.

A brush including a bristle backing, bristles carried. thereby, the backing being formed with an opening, a block of polishing material movable through the openin and a spring carried by the block of material and engaging the wall of the opening, said spring permitting frictionally retarded movement of the material toward the bristles and preventing movement of the material in the opposite direction.

A brush including a bristle backing formed with an opening, a metal sleeve in said opening, a polishing material holder movable through the opening, and a spring carried by the holder and cooperating with the sleeve, said spring permitting frictionally retarded movement of the holder toward the bristles and preventing movement of the holder in the opposite direction.
