The cover 36 may be removably secured to the housing 8 by volts 42. Extending through a staple 43 on the inside of the cover 36 is a lubricating wick 44, which (projects 'into a slot or central recess inthe thrust block. The cover 36 is also provided with a recess. 45rsurrounding the top and sides of the wick and main taining the latter in its proper relation to the cover. These various features involved in the internal construction of thejourrlal box are fully thereof with a recess 46 for there'ception of the wear plate 47 upon which the adjacentjend of the side frame rests. The wear plate 47 is crowned transversely, as-at 48, to provide for a rocking bearing for theside frame. Projecting upwardly from the wearplate 47 is a lug 49 cooperating with the inner side'of thefadjacent end portion of the side frame 'to provide athrust bearing therefor. The thrust bearing surface 50 'of said lug is curvedas indicated in Fig. 2. The arrangement above described, whereinthe only'thrust projection on the journal box for engagementwith the side frame is at the inner side ofthe latter, reduces' to a minimum-thethrust between the respective flanges 39, 41 of-the thrust-block 32 and journal 28when the car body shiftslateral ly, as in rounding curves. Such lateral shifting of the car body, of course, carrieswith it the bolster and the side frames engaged therewith.
It will be seen that the thrust on the end flange 39 of the thrust bearing32 in response tooutward shifting of the journal boxrwith the side frame is limited to an amount corresponding to" the frictional resistance between the side frame and the journal box. In other words, when the side frame movesoutwardlyfand, due to the frictional engagement between said side frame and the journal box, the flange 39 of the journalbox thrustlugl 32 is brought into engagement with the annular flange '41 .of the axle 28, the side frame is free to move further outwardly. over the journal 'box' and no greater thrust occurs between-said flanges 39. and 41 than is commensurate' with the frictionbetween the journalbox and the side frame. This thrustfitwill be apparent, is decidedly less than would 'occur bei tween said flanges if the .side, frame were restricted from outwardmo'vementby anv outer lug'on the wear plate 47 or other portion of thejournal box. It should further behoted that in my present invention the journal box ribs 22*and'the cooperating side irame' grooves-20 are'positioned substantially in the aforesaid horizontal plane pass-' lugs or ribs22 and grooves 20' substantially in the horizontal plane passing through the centers of the journalsresultsin aconnection between the journal box and side frame which connection is ofmaximum effectiveness and at the same box, the latter would have more of a tendency to rotate said lug out of engagement'with the recess20;-"whereas if said lug were moved below the *position 'shownyfit would be necessary to'extend said lug andthe'cooperating'member 23,

In a car truck, a side frame including a tension element, a journal box upon which one end of said side frame is mounted, a connection between an upper corner of said journal box and the end of said side frame and comprising a groove in one of said members and a rib on the other received in said groove, a rib and groove connection between a side of said journal box and said tension element, the journal box on its top providing for unobstructed outward movement of the side frame with respect to the journal box and havingon said top a thrust projection engageable by the inner side of said side frame.

In a car truck, a side frame including a tension element, a journal box upon which one end of said side frame is mounted, a connection between an upper corner of said journal box and the end of said side frame, and a connection between a side of said journal box and said tension element, said connections being constructed and arranged to provide for unobstructed transverse movement of the side frame over the journal box into assembled relation thereto while the journal box is assembled with its axle, and to provide for vertical and lateral angling between said journal box and said side frame.

In a car truck, a side frame including a tension element, a joural box having a journal therein, one end of said side frame being mounted on said journal box, a connection between said tension member and said journal box, said side frame having a shelf portion provided with an opening, a bolster having a projection extending into said opening, said side frame shelf and said connection between the journal box and tension member being substantially in a horizontal plane passing through the center of said journal.

In a car truck, a side frame includinga tension element, said side frame having a shelf portion provided with an opening, a bolster having a projection extending into said opening, a journal box for receiving the journal of a Wheel of said truck, one end ofsaid side frame being mounted on said journal box, and a quick wheel change connection between said journal box and the tension element of said side frame and comprising a projection on one of said members in slidable engagement with a groove on the other, said side frame shelf and said connection being substantially in a horizontal plane passing through the center of said journal.
