The prop flaps 29 are provided *with `angulary score lines 37 which extend diagonally and outwardlyv from theupper corners of. the body" or panel 12 to the outer edges of -the'said flaps.f f
In theassembling ofthe display box,.the blank A is of course folded'on the yrespective fold or' scorelines, each wing section B and'C being so folded asto provide afcompartment E, the walls 17,' 18, `19 and 20 forming ya'compartment-Eythe Walls 17,. 18, 19 and 120i forming lar rectangular shaped structure and whichis'held'iri anerected position;` by 'f adhesively securingz the `flap .21 to the back'ofiithe body. or'fpanel 12. .The- liiaps 23 and 24 forming the inner bottom wall'are.foldedv in famannerfalready mentioned and held closedv by the outer iiap'25and .locking tongue. 26.r By reference tofFigure4- of the drawings, it-willbe seen that` the `display compartment E may `be swung toiafposition forward'of Iand beyond `opposite sides'of'the body 12 land the said compart-` mentsare of a size to completelyoverlie the panel,12 when the same are folded.v inwardlyV to closed4 positiony asy shown` in Figure 2oi' thel drawings. body 12 in the manner shown in Figure 2, aty
which time the prop aps 29 lie flat against the cover 33 and wall 32. By folding the cover downwardly over the compartments E, the wall 32 provides an end Wall for the box whereas the cover 33 overlies the compartments E, the nap 35 is inserted between the bottom flaps of the compartments E, the notch 36 thereof receiving the adjacent sides of the two compartments and the box locked in closed position; Thus the box will resemble an ordinaryV rectangular shaped cardboard box, but by swinging the cover 33 to 'anjgopen position and moving the compartments ,E .outwardly to the position shown in Figure 4, "theshipping box may be transposed into an attra'ctive display `stand for the display merchandise packed and shipped therein.
' 'i'In the drawings; I have shown the two compartments E as having a combined width equal to thewidth of the front panel 12 as best seen in Figure i2 whereupomwhen the same are swung to a closed position, the sides having the display openings'22 therein areY in meeting engagement. This prevents thecontents of the compartments from laccidentally Adropping through the open sides during shipment or handling when the box is lledand while inra vclosed position. .However, there may be timeswhen the combined width of the compartments is less than the WidthV of the panel 12 and Ato lclose such compartments by swinging them to the front side of the panel as justidescribed Vwould not cause them to yassume a position inV meeting engagement, thus there is a danger'of thecontents of the compartment becoming accidentally displaced through the openings22. Therefore, instead of swingingthe l compartments` to aclosed position'r against the front side of ,thepanel 12I am able to swing themso that the closed ,backs ofthe compartments atly engage `the back of the panel 12 with the open sides of the compartments facingA outrearof the, panelso that,it is impossible torfold the props flat against the rear -of. the panel. Therefore,l1 provide the diagonal score lines 37 whichenables the infolding' of the'propsto permit of the folding over of they cover 33 aboutV the open sidesrof the compartments.
1 In Figures 8 to 11 inclusive, a ,modified construction of my invention is ,shown and which is substantially identical to that shown in the preferred form with the exception that anv extra display:` compartment is embodied therein. In View of the-similarity between this form and the preferredv form, like reference characters referred to inlthe preferred form designate similar parts in this modication. In this form ofthe inven-` tion, the bottompf the Vfront wal1,12 has an extension portion integral therewith Iwhich is folded into a rectangular shaped tray or display compartment 38, `the same beingof a width approximating fthe width of the panel l2, and
being disposed below the plane of the bottoms of.
is in closed position. In thelclosingl of this type` of display box, the compartments E fold inwardly over the body 12 in the manner described in the preferred form whereas the cover is locked by engagement with the front wall of the compartment 38. The compartments E serve to close the top of the compartment 38. TheA compartment 38 acts as a base for the box when in open display position, and the openbox is balanced by reason of an equal amount of merchandise contained within the respective compartments.
In Figures 12 to 17 inclusive, a still further modified form is shown and which is substantially the same as the construction shown in the preceding forms with the exception that the panel 12 is provided with a display opening 42, and the bottom of the panel 12 is provided with an extension which is folded into a swingably mounted compartment or tray 43. When in operative position, the compartment or tray 43 is swung to a position behind the panel 12 as shown in Figures 12 and 15, whereas articles of merchandise placed within the compartment 43 may be displayed through the window opening 42. When not in use, the compartment 43 is swung around to the front of the panel 12 as illustrated in Figure 16 and the cover swung to a closed position so that the locking tongue 44 thereof is insertible in a slot 45 provided in a Wall of the compartment or tray 43 as will be seen by reference to Figure 17 of the drawings.
In Figure 18 of the drawings the construction is identical to `that shown in the preferred form with the exception that the cover 33 is shorter in length and provided at its outer free edge with locking tongues 46 which enter s'lots 47 provided in the walls of the compartments E. Thus when the compartments are swung to closed position, the cover 33 is swung thereover and the tongues 46 inserted to the respective slots 4'7.
In Figure 19 a display device is shown which is similar in construction to that shown in the preferred form but is not foldable into a self closed box. The compartments F may be swung to a position over the body 12 but the upper portion of the body is left unscored so as not to fold over the compartments F when they are in closed position. After the compartments F have been swung over the body 12 the entire structure may be inserted in a tubular wrapper for shipment.
In all of the forms shown and described, the display compartments are movable from aposition against the flat body of the device to a display position beyond the same, and when in open display position, the4 compartments serve as a rigid base for supporting the display device in display position. 'Ihe weight of the articles on the display contained with the display compartment serves to render the boxl firm and stable and prevents accidental tipping of the structure.
While I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiments of my invention, I wish it to be understood that certain changes as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. A display box comprising a body, compartments swingably connected to opposite sides of closed position thereagainst and to an openv display position therebeyond, a cover carried by f said body and foldable over the tops and one of the sides of said compartments when the same are in closed position and adapted to assume a raised position coextensive with said body when said compartments are in open display position, and foldable props between said cover and saidgcompartments, the same being foldable to an inoperative position flat against said cover when said compartments are swung to closed position, said foldable props being movable to an operative unfolded position upon swinging of said compartments to open display position for supporting said cover in a raised position.
2. A display box comprising a flat body, display compartments swingably connected to opposite sides of said body for inward swinging movement to a closed position thereagainst and for outward swinging movement to an open display position therebeyond, a display panel hinged to the top of said body, and foldable props connected to opposite sidesof said display panel and to the top of the side walls of the respective display compartments, said props foldable inwardly to lie flat over said display panel when the display compartments are in closed position and extending at vright angles thereto when said display compartments are in open unfolded position for supporting said display panel in a raised position.
3. A display box comprising a single blank of material cut and scored between its side ends to provide a nat body portion, the material at opposite sides of said body portion being folded into two sets of vertical compartment walls, the
extreme side ends of the materials being adhesivelysecured to the rear of said flat body portion, aps folded inwardly from the bottom of certain of said vertical compartment walls and forming bottom compartment walls, a foldable cover flap coextensive with the top of said body portion, and foldable prop flaps connecting said cover flap lwith adjacent vertical compartment Walls.
