IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-SEoTloNs'FoR coucHEs.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,681, dated December 25, 1877; application filed August 24, 1877'. l.
Toall whom it may concern:` l j Be it known that I, ,CLAUS RAABE, of Clifton, county of Richmond, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved `Self- Adjusting Head-Section for Couches7 lof which the following is a specification.: j
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal seccin of my improved couch. Fig. 2 is an end elevation.` Similar letters of reference indicate corre` sponding parts. j y p p p Y My invention consists of two moable head- 'sections attached to pivot-bars journaled in the couch-frame, said sections being connected together so as to move in opposite directions; the object being to provide a head-section the parts of which are adjustable and counterbal-r anceeach other, so that they will maintain any position Ain which theymay be placed.
In the drawings, A is the body of the couch,
j having the usual back B and arms() for supporting the head-section. D is the lower portion of the head-section, which consists of a round bolster, E, attached to a frame, F, made by fastening two boards together at an angle. This portion of the head-section is secured to a bar, a, which is round at its ends, which project beyondlthe ends of the bolster, and are received by holes in the arms C.
The upper portion G of the head-section consists of a convex bolstersecured to a rigid l back, E. The back H is secured to a bar, b, having round ends, that project into holes in the arms C. A curved arm, I, is attached to thefpart F, and is provided with several holes,
c. A bar, J, is jointed to the part H, and is provided with several holes, d, `for the pin e, that also passes through one of the holes in i l the arm I.
`'Ihetwo parts of theV head-section swing easily on their pivot-bars, and will remain in any desired position. The downward motion of the part G` is ,limited by the cross-bar K, which connects the arms C. The adjustment of the two parts may be altered by changing the pin ein the holes e d. j
Aplate, f, is attached to the end of the part `D, and a screw, g, passes through the outer arm C, and is `provided with a handle, la, by
which it may be turned so as to bearagainst the plate f, and `clamp the part `D in any desired position. l
The bolster E, being separate from thepart Gr, forms a convenient and comfortablesupport for the head of a person lying upon the couch.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a couch, of the parts D G, having .pivot-bars a b, the arm I, and bar J, substantially as herein shown and described. Y CLAUS RAABE.`
