The embodiment selected to illustrate the in- Thus it will be seen that thearm 10 is pervention is for use with either'single or doublemitted rotative movement upon the cylindrical acting doors and comprises an arm 10 pivotally portion 54. The head 60 of the pintle 52 is 35 connected at 12 (see Figure 2) with a door positioned within a recess 62 in the arm l0.

One end of the a recess 28 in thecasingv30 with which` the door sliding bar is cut away as at 64 (see IFigure 6) i 10 is associated through the medium of spring to provide a head 66. This head is provided with hinges 32 which tend'to' close the door.` 4Screws a cam surface 68 and a recessV 70 for receiving 45 y33 secure the guide member to' the casing'. The a roller'72 (see Figures 5, 7, and 8) when the bar 24 is arranged' to slide to" and fro along the door has been moved to its open position as illusguide member 26 to permit the door to be moved trated in Figure 2. The roller '10 is loosely upon its hinges 32 in the ordinary manner. mounted upon a pin 74 carried by one end of a In Figure 4 yI have detailed' the pivotal conlever 76. The lever is positioned between a pair 50 nection between the arm 10 and the door bracket of lugs 78 formed integrally with the carriage 14. The pivotal connection comprises a pintle 34 and fulcrums upon a pin 80 carried by the lugs.
having a cylindrical portion 36 passing through The normal position of the lever when the head an opening' 38 in the arm 10 `and a threaded 66 is disengaged from the roller end, is indicated portion 40 threaded through'the door bracket in Figure 5. Shoulders '19 upon the lever '16 en- 55 gage the lugs 78 for limiting the downward movement of the roller end of the lever so that the roller cannot move below the lower end of the cam surface 68. 'Ihe lever is yieldingly held in this position by means of a spring 82 mounted upon a roller end of the lever 76 which compresses the spring 82. As soon as the head 66 has been moved sufficiently far to properly align the recess 70 with the roller 72, the latter will snap into the recess by reason of the spring 82. 'Ihe roller 72 is resiliently urged in the direction of the head 66 Y with a forcesunicient to hold the door against a closing force materially greater than that of the closing spring for the door` but materially less than the hinges will stand without injury, so that the application of a reasonably small additional force will enable the user to close the door merely by pushing on it.
I iind that good results can be obtained by positioning the door holder with respect to the hinges 32 in such a manner that the head 66 of the sliding member will be connected with the lever 76 when the door has been swung 90 from its closed position. It is desirable to provide cushioning means for damping the shock occurring when the door is moved abruptly to the open position shown in Figure 2. I have illustrated a block 94 which is positioned in a spring chamber 96 transversely of the -head 66. The head is shaped to pass between the 4lugs 78 against which the block 94 is yieldingly held by means of a pair of springs 98. lThe block is bored at 100 for receiving pins 102 upon which the springs 98 are mounted. One end of each spring bears against the end of the spring chamber, as at 104. The springs are placed in position with the necessary amount of initial tension. The pins 102 are threaded upon their inner ends 106 and threaded into openings 108 in the guide member. This feature is'clearly brought out in Figure 7. A screw driver may be inserted in slots 110in the exposed ends of the pins for assembling or removing the mechanism associated with the pins.
The end of the head 66 bears against the block 94 when the roller 72 is finally positioned within the recess 70. When the head 66 strikes the block 94, any remaining forcein excess of that which is necessary to swing the door to its open position is absorbed in the compression of the springs 98. Shoulders 112 limit the amount the springs may be compressed by striking against the edges 114 of the lugs 78. Such striking does not generally occur during the normal opening and closing of the door. Referring now to Figure 7, I have shown the manner in which the lever 76 is moved during the cushioning action. It will be noted that one side of the recess 70 inclines gently as at 115, so that the roller 72 may move easily up the incline when the door is moved beyond its normal open position. The cushioning function 'of the springs 98 is effective only during such movement of the roller up the incline. In Figure 7, the full line illustration of the lever and the head 66 shows the manner in which the cushioning function is brought about, and the dotted line showing illustrates the roller positioned in the recess for holding the door in the open position shown in Figure 1. As soon as the excess force has been-absorbed, the springs 98 move the head 66 back to the dotted line position and the roller comes to rest at the bottom of the recess 70.
I have provided means for rendering the door holder inoperative for holding the door open. In Figure 7, I have shown the `washer 88 as being positioned upon a slidable cam block 116. In Figure 8 the cam block is shown as being shifted suflioiently forward to render the spring 82 inoperative for holding the roller 72 in the recess 70. In referring to Figure 9, it will be noted that the sleeve 84 is slidably mounted upon a pin 118 secured to the bottom of the spring chamber 96. 'Ihe lower end of the sleeve is flattened at 120 and slidably positioned within a slot 122 in the cam block. lI 'he lower end of-the sleeve passes through the washer 88 andl is provided with anges 124 for preventing the washer from dropping oi the sleeve when it is not supported by the cam block. Referring now to Figure 13, it will be noted that the end of the guide member is slotted as at 126, and is provided with ribs 128 which ride within grooves 130 in a grip member 132 which is welded to the cam block. 'Ihe cam block is of material having high wear resisting properties. The grip portion 132 is of the same material as the carriage 10 to eliminate color contrast. The grip member 132 terminates substantially flush with the lower face of the guide member, as illustrated in Figure 8. Ordinarily the flange 124 will rest upon the thin extensions 134 upon the cam block when it is shifted to the position shown in Figure 8. The cam block may be easily shifted for lifting the washer to a position where it will rest upon the upper face of the cam block, as shown in Figure 7. When the cam block is positioned as in Figure 8, the door may be opened and closed without being influenced by the lever 76.
The door holder is substantially concealed from view and is so constructed that no parts project beyond the casing or the door when the door is closed. I have recessed the guide member 26 to accommodate the arm 10, so that no part of the arm will project .beyond the contour of thel guide member when the door is in its closed position. This construction provides a compact arrangement of the parts.
In Figure 14, I have illustrated my door holder in connection with a door 136 of the doubleacting type. 'I'he guide member 26 is shown as being fastened to the door rather than the door casing. In any installation, the guide member may be associated with the door or the door casing. I'have shown the door 136 associated with a wall structure 138, and the door provided with the usual hinge means 140 of the type permitting the door to swing to a full open position in either direction, as illustrated.
Without further elaboration the foregoing will so fully explain my invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions oi service.
