Application January,13, 1934, SerialNo. 706,567
' 1Claim. (01.259 45) s x This invention relates to a combined'churn and washing machine and has for an important object .:.As shown inFigures 1 thereof;the provision of a device which can be used with any suitable power means, particularly 5 a power means not operated by electricity.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a combination device of this kind a novel tub supporting and oscillating means which is so constructed that the tub may be readily removed therefrom and anothertub inserted in the supporting means, there being one type of tub for use in churning of liquids and another type for use in washing garments or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide an exceedingly simple structure of this kind which is constructed in'a manner whereby it may be readily moved from place to place so that it maybe readily transported to the place at which the operation is to be performed.
The above and various other objects and advantages'of this invention will in part be described and in. part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferredembodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:-
Flgure 1 is a detail side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the preferred em-u bodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail front elevation of the device partly broken away and in section.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken through the tub structure shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 isa detail end elevation partly broken away and in section of a modified form of tub structure.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring. to the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates a base which has mounted thereon a power member P of suitable character which is provided with an eccentric 11. The base 10 has disposed thereon at a point spaced fromthe power member P, a pair of uprights or standards 12 and 13, which are spaced apart the desired distance. A substantially U-shaped tub supporting member, generally designated as 14, which is provided on each free leg thereof with out-turned trunnions 15,' is joumaled or rockably mounted on the standards or posts 12 and 13, by means of a bearing structure 16, which engages the trunnions. 15. The bight 17 of the tub supporting member 14 has an offset central portion 18 which is engaged by one end of a pitman 19, the pitman w 19. being connected at the other-end to the .ec-
centric1l1'. c n
and 2, a tub structure T is supported by the tub supporting member '14, and this tub structure T comprises .a. casing 20 of suitable configuration which is provided at each end thereof with a pair of outstanding lugs 21 provided in the outer side thereof with elongated grooves 22. The parallel legs 23 of the tub supporting member 14 are adapted to engagein the grooves 22 of the lugs 21.
A pair of handles 24are secured one at each end of the tubT so as to facilitate theplacement or removal of the tub T from. the support- "the tub T constitutes a churn which has on the interior thereof a; perforated baflie B releasably engaged between pairs of guides 26 carried by the ends 27 of the tub .T. Each end 2'7 has a pair of guides 26 on the inside thereof.
In Figure 4, there is shown a tub structure T which is used in the washing of clothes. This tub structure T has a ribbed or corrugated inner surface 28 and is provided at each end thereof with outstanding lugs 21 which are grooved after the manner of the lugs 21 and are releasably engaged with the tub supporting member 14. This tub T" has a lid L hinged thereto and pivoted locking members 25 are carried by the tub T so as to releasably lockthe lid L in closed position.
is hinged. to the standard 12, as at 30. The
wringer supporting member 29 comprises a vertically extending post or support 31 and a horilocking member 34carried by the post 12. When the wringer supporting member 29 is in operative position, the wringer engaging member or bar 32 is disposed in a position extending outwardly of the base 10 and when in inoperative position, is disposed with the-wringer engaging member 32 extending inwardly of the base.
In the use and operation of the combined churn and wringer herein disclosed, when-it is desired e to churn liquids such as milk, the tub structure T is mounted between the parallel arms 23 of the supporting member 14. The power member P is then set in operation and the pitman 19 will oscillate the tub T for the desired length of time.
When it is desired to wash clothes or the like, the tub T may be removed by withdrawing the tub T vertically from the supporting member 14, whereupon the tub structure T used for washing clothes is disposed between the arms 23. At this time, the wringer supporting member 29 may be swung with the horizontal wringer engaging member 32 projecting outwardly of the base'10 and the desired hand Operated wringer may be clamped onto the support 32. a
It will be apparent from the foregoing thatan exceedingly simple structure has been provided which can be used for either churning. of liquids or can be used in the washing of clothes and that any suitable form of power member P- may be used to operate the device. This power mem ber P may be in the form of an electric motor,
1 an internal combustion engine or a spring operto the purchaser of the device.
noscillatory supporting frame, said frame including guide rail portions for engaging said slots in the tub, out-turned trunnions at the upper ends of said guide rail portions pivotally engaging said bearings, a horizontal portion for sup porting said'tub-in proper axial relation with said trunnions and an ofiset in said horizontal portion constituting a journal whereby said frame may be connected for oscillationby' a suitable source of power.
