means of the staple and to prevent dislocation Aof the legs of the staple, the bottommfthehub instead of being made entirelyflatas in Figs, ,1,2, 3 and 4, may be provided with the annularlaupstanding groove 13, Figs. 9I and 1Q, and the points.. of the legs by this provisinl'will enter the hub and strike against the curved side of thev wall of the combined ller and anvil and thus be accurately turned or rolled in by contact with the'- groove 9, same being crossed as indicated in 'Figi 4 and turned outwardly toward the wall'of the hub andy its bottom, andv at the Sametime vcoming into contact with the teat Sfthesepoints will be directed laterally away 'from oneanother, as shown in Fig. 4, thus preventing the butting togetherof thepoints"andfensuringA desirable rolling of the points to effectasecure connection .be`
tween the staple and the'button.v
Y As lshown in Fig; 11 the invention is applicablev to an open top button, the differencebetween such open Atop` buttonH andthe closed top button pre-` viously-described being that 'the cap-element 14 is centrally perforated and'its edgel turned down toward the hub 15 While its rim iiange l6` is closeddown over the Yuptuprnedmarginal-lip 17 forassembly purposes.v Inthe case of the open top button the previouslyr described combined yfillerV and anvil is replacedby an extraneous die having the cylindrical portion 18 of a size toilt within the hub of the button and extend downwardly there-1 into and providedwiththe teat "19 and the annular'4 groove 20 corresponding in shape, cion-. structionjand function 4with the parts Vc lz'asigr'iated' andV 9 in the vpreviously described closed top button. l This die performsl functions-similar tol the combined filler and anvil With"respect tothe closed top button. As shown in Fig.` 1'1, the bot-v tom ofthe hub may; be fiatA or'straight, or as 4shown in Fig. "13. it"mafyf be provided with an annular groove 21 corresponding in function with the annular groove l3'previously described. Q f
By thenconstructions of a closed top button and an opengtop button lthe `dimensions'of they hub need'not be increased for the reception ofthe staple clinching features and therebyfboth forms of buttons may conform` hto thev dimensions of these and other :parts commonly use dA in ,stand-Y ard buttonsy of v these types'. :There is notendency for distortion of the hub 'of the back'and the cap.
As already stated, a function of the teat is to separate'the'staple legs inthe process of rolling.
'The-relative size ofthe annular grooveV as com` pared to the'distance between the staple legs is such that afterfthe staple legs have pierced 'the hub, the points bear against the Aoutside and in' wardly sloping groove or lannular groove in the anvil or die.r It is impossible that' the pointsof the staple be rolled outwardly because of the nature of the groove and the fact that the pointsare immediately turned inwardly, In the `continued pressure of the setting 'dies or tools, the lrolling or incurling of the staple legs continues rand the conicaly teat functions only to keepthe'staplelegs separated and from coming into intimate contact with one another and also to prevent them from shooting off to one side or the other because of lack of control. This conical teat functions in the process of rolling to ensure uniform results in the behavior of the staple legs. It is essential that the grooves in the combined filler and anvil4 or in-the die should .beof substantially'the confdrrnationlshown ratllerithan that the said grooves should be substantially circular i a. tin cross section. In order to direct the piercing of the hub'by The use of a self-piercing fastener in connectionV With a button having initially an imperforate ,solidbottornin itshub, as in the present invention, effectseconomies in production and assembly, in .that-theutilization of the solid metal of the bottom of the hubbetween the holes made by the fastener in settingthe parts, avoids the necessity ,of preparing a special cross bar or bridge for the anchorage of the fastener in the button, and also obviatesthe necessity of providing a setting machine equipped `to laccurately assemble a fas-1 teneri and a :button 'already made with fastener holes so .that the? holes in the button andthe points vof the fastener mayalways register'.
AThe term rvanvil,' asl usedlin, the claims,` is intended-to apply equally to Ithe` combined ller and: anvil-'which is'ffixed 'inthe closed -top but-g ton Iand' the f extraneous die` which takes I its place in the Vcpentop button, since thesefitwo'devicesf function 'alike inl the .clin'ching ofthe 'staple legs.=
