IMPROVEMENT IN TAIL-PIECES FOR GUITARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,556, dated December 25, 1877; application filed October 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB ABRAHAM, of Silver City, in the county of Grant and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Tail-Piece for Guitars, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to tail-pieces for guitars orbanj os; and the nature of my invention consists, mainly, in a tail-piece which is so constructed that it can be fastened to the band of the guitar-box at the back thereof, and at right angles to the direction of the strain on the strings.
The invention also consists in combining, with a iianged tail-piece, a iianged foot-rest, which will rest squarely on the box ofthe guitar, and prevent any cutting or scratching of the surface there, and at the saine time effect the vibration, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of a guitar having my improvement applied to it, and Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the sounding-board of' a guitar-body, and A the band thereof, which parts are constructed in the usual wellknown manner. B designates my improved taiIpiece, which is preferably of skeleton form,
and which is constructed with a lip, a, on one end, and a fiat foot, b, on the other end. The iiat or horizontal portion of the foot b lies upon the sounding-board A, and the vertical portion of this foot-piece is perforated for the strings, which perforations are countersunk to prevent the strings from being cut.
My improved tail-piece maybe made of metal or other suitable material.
Forbanjos, thetail-piecesmay be constructed with a foot, b, of sufficient height to dispense with a bridge.
The lip a is fastened to the band of the guitar by three screws, two of which are near the face or sounding-board of the instrument, and the third is placed at the center of the guitarband, and is of such form as to answer the purpose of the usual button.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The guitar tail-piece A, formed with a lip, a, and a T- shaped foot, I), having perforations for the strings, substantially in the manner described.
