table 3 and each is formed. with a flat base poriingwmember; i x A tionjl3 which bears against the front edge of the Fig. 5 i's'a.fragmentary-sectional view through table. Located at the front of the table; is a '5 :one of'. the bag-opening members and showing bracket-adjusting rod 14 which, is rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 15 secured to the table. This rod 14 is provided with screw-threaded portions 16 which extend through and have screw-threaded engagement with the bracket members 9. The screw-threaded portions at opposite ends of the rods are of opposite pitch, that at one end being a right-handed thread and that at the other end being a left-handed thread. The brackets 9 are thusmounted on the rod 14 but by turning the rod these brackets will be adjusted toward and from each other and during such adjusting movement the base plates 13 will have bearing against the front face of the table 3. The rod may be provided with means for turning it such as the handles 1'7.
The bag-opening members 11 will preferably have a vertical dimension slightly greater than the thickness of the mattress.
In using the device a bag 2 is placed on the table 3 with the open end adjacent the front of the'table where the'bagopening members are mounted. These members will then be adjusted toward each other sufiiciently to permit them to be entered into the bag and the bag 2 and said members 11 will be relatively adjusted so as to introduce the members into the bag with the members extending at substantially right angles to the front edge of the table or at right angles to the open mouth of the bag. The rod 14 is. then turned in a direction'to separate the bag-opening members llfrom each other and'the engagement of these members with theedges of the bag will hold the bag open and also hold the edges of the bag taut as shown in Fig; 1. Since the vertical dimension of the bag-openin members llis slightly greater than the thickness of the mattress the width of the open mouth 18 of the bag will'be such as to freely permit the mattress to be introduced edgewise into the bag.
The outer face of each bag-opening member 11 is preferably formed with a spur 19 which grips or punctures the bag'and thus holds it'from slipping off from the bag-opening members while the mattress is being inserted.
When the bag has been opened the operative can readily take a mattress and introduce it edgewise into the bag. In handling a mattress it is convenient for'the operative to carry the mattress on his shoulders and partly extended arms and by having the table at the proper height the operative can carry the mattress in this way to the table and easily introduce it into the open bag.
20 indicates a back stop which is shown as removably carried by the table near its rear end and which serves to prevent the bag and mattress from slipping off from the table.
This stop is shown as provided with legs 21 adapted to be inserted into apertures formed in the table 3. When the mattress 1 has been introduced into the bag the shaft 14 is operated to move the bag-opening members toward each other and the set screws 10 may then be backed off to allow the bag-openingmembers to be swung into a position such as shown in Fig. 3 in which position they are entirely removed from the bag. The bag may then be closed by folding the open end' in some appropriate way. Subsequently the closed bag will preferably be tied with suitable ties, such'for instance as tapes, strings, straps, wire, etc.
After the mattress has been introduced into I To facilitatethis operation the table is formed with a plurality of grooves 22 in which the bag and the mouth end of the bag has been folded to close the bag then the ends of the ties which are in the grooves 22 may be brought up over the top of the bag and tied thereby fastening the package.
The extensibility of the front legs 4 permits the front of the table to be placed at the most convenient height for the particular operator using it.
The two front legs 4 are shown as connected by cross members 24 and the rear legs 5 are also connected by other cross members 25. These legs are supported by base members 26 having brackets 27 to which .the legs are secured.
While I have herein illustrated the invention as applied to the packaging of mattresses yet I wish to state that the invention is not limited to the packaging. of mattresses but may be adapted for use in packaging other bulky articles.
I claim:
