DREDGE BUCKET AND LIP ASSEMBLY Filed Aug. 3, 1934 Patented Dec. 11, 1934 PATENT OFFICE DREDGE BUCKET AND LIP ASSEMBLY William H. Stires, High Bridge, N. J., assigner to Taylor-Wharton Iron & Steel Company, High Bridge, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application August 3, 1934, Serial No. 738,365
10 Claims.
The invention relates to chain dredge buckets of the type in which hood straddling lips are provided to keep the bucket up to normal capacity, and it provides certain improvements in the relative construction and mounting of the parts so that the lip may be removed and replaced whenever necessary, with the minimum expenditure of time and effort, and in such way as to inhibit loss of values in dredging.
In prior applications I have disclosed bucket and lip assemblies in which provision was made for repair and replacement of the lip without the necessity of disconnecting the bucket from the chain, the mounting being of pivotal character and permitting the lip to be rocked to straddling or seating position. In such prior applications the lip was cradled in cored pockets.
The present invention is a carrying forward of that inventive idea and principle through the use of means which enables me to dispense with cored pockets which, under some conditions, might be objectionable because of the delay entailed in clearing them preliminary to the attachmerit of the lip.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention more readily will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a 'part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a chain dredge bucket and lip assembly embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is'a section on line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail of the interlock;
Referring to the drawing, 5 represents a chain dredge bucket which, saving the particulars hereinafter noted, may be of conventional form. In accordance with the invention, the hood of the bucket iscast or otherwise provided with integral hub-like extensions or pintles 6 with headed extremities 7. The hub-like members 6 are in opposing relation on the insideof the hood adjacent the back wall and they serve as mountings for the lip and also assist in preventing spreading of the lip.
Stopping short of the posts or bearing members 6 there is an offset ledge or shoulder 8 which constitutes a limiting stop or abutment for the lip inwardly of the rim seat 9. 'Ihe lip 10 is formed to straddle the rim seat through the mement 8 and the latter tapers oif gradually towards the bottom of the bucket in order to eliminate conditions making for choking.
The ends of the lip are formed or provided with open slots 14 established by curved arms or grapples 15. Under the construction and arrangement stated, the lip may be swingingly engaged with the pintles 6 and eased to its straddling posture relative with Vthe rim seat 9 and secured against casual displacement in any suitable manner, but preferably through the intervention of some suitable interlock of the quick-acting type. For example, the lip may be externally provided with an apertured forked extension 16 to fish a co-ordinate member 17 on the bucket through the solicitation of a wedge in the form of a taper bolt 18..
1. A chain dredge bucket combined with a lip in straddling relation with the rim of the bucket,
said bucket having opposed hub-like members, and the lip having its terminals constructed and arranged swingingly to engage said hub-like extensions.
2.'A chain dredge bucket having a rim seat and an abutment inwardly thereof and having a pair of opposed hub-like members in spaced relation with the abutment, and a lip having an inside apron extension in substantially ush relation with said abutment and having outside apron extensions and having its terminals constructed and arranged for pivotal mounting on the hub-like members.
3. A chain dredge bucket having within the hood and formed integral with opposing walls thereof a pair of trunnions with headed extremities, combined with a lip in straddling relation with the rim of the bucket and having inside and outside apron extensions, said in# side extension having bearing members for cooperation with the trunnions.
4. A chain dredge bucket having within the hood and formed integral with opposing Walls thereof a pair of trunnions with headed extremities, combined with a lip in straddling relation with the rim of the bucket and having inside and outside apron extensions, said inside extenthe ends of the lip having bearing members for pivotal engagement with said hub-like members.
6. A chain dredge bucket having a lip seat and a pair of hub-like members within the bucket and beyond the lip seat, and a lip having inside and outside extensions whereby it may be postured in straddling relation with the lip seat, the ends of the lip having bearing members for pivotal engagement with said hub-like members, said hub-like members having collars which are effective to prevent spreading of the ends of the lip.
7. A chain dredge bucket having a rim seat for a, straddling lip and having an inside abutment or limit stop for the lip, a pair of post-like members below the rim seat, and a lip having inside and outside apron extensions and having its ends adapted for pivotal engagement with said post-like members.
8. A chain dredge bucket having a rim seat and another seat formed by an oiset ledge or shoulder on the inside wall of the bucket, hubs on the inside Wall of the bucket, and a lip adapted to straddle the rim seat and having its terminals constructed for pivotal engagement with said hubs, the lip having an inside apron extension which is substantially flush fitted to the oiset ledge or shoulder and having spaced outside extensions to relieve stress on the lip.
9. A chain dredge bucket having a rim seat and another seat formed by an offset ledge or shoulder on the inside wall of the bucket, hubs on the inside Wall of the bucket, and a lip adapted to straddle the rim seat and having its terminals constructed for pivotal engagement with said hubs, the lip having an inside apron extension which issubstantially flush tted to the offset ledge or shoulder and having spaced outside extensions to relieve stress on the lip, and means for taking up lost motion between the lip and bucket.
10. A chain dredge bucket having a straddling lip seat and a continuous ledge or shoulder within the bucket and constituting an abutment for an inside apron extension of the lip, pivotal mountings formed integral with opposed inside walls of the bucket, and a lip having hook-like terminals for engagement with said pivotal mountings and having an inside apron extension and external bracing. provisions.
