2 Claims.
This invention relates broadly to cutting devices and the cutting device embodying the features of the present invention is particularly adapted for cutting to length rubber hose for use as a part of the cooling system of an internal combustion engine, and more specifically for connecting the outlet of the radiator of an internal combustion engine, with the inlet neck of the water circulating chamber suitably provided as an integral structure of the engine block as is well known in the art.
Briefly the invention consists in the provision of a device that may be readily mounted on a suitable support, such as a Wall or the like and including a relatively stationary knife relative to which the tube to be cut, subsequent to a puncturing of the tube by the knife, is rotated to sever one section from another section of the hose.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the device, illustrating an application of the same.
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the knife.
Referring more in detail to the drawing it will be seen that the invention comprehends the provision of a bracket designated generally by the reference character 10. Bracket is formed from a single oblong piece of metal bent on a transverse fold line inwardly from one end thereof to provide an attaching ange 11 extending at right angles to the body of the bracket 10. Inwardly from a relatively opposite end thereof the plate from which the bracket 10 is formed is bent on a transverse fold line to provide an upwardly and forwardly extending end portion 12.
A tool post is designated generally by the reference character 13, and the same is formed from a relatively short oblong plate of metal bent on a transverse fold line at one end to provide a right angularly disposed attaching base or iiange 14 that is provided with a pair of apertures adapted to register wth a pair of apertures provided in the end l2 of the bracket 10 to accommodate fastening elements 15 for securing the post 13 at an acute angle to the body of the bracket 10 in the manner suggested in Figures 1 and 2.
The reference numeral 16 designates the cutting tool or knife which is formed from steel or other suitable material and comprises a substantially oblong body 17 which adjacent one end is pro- 1933, Serial No. 694,663 4 vided with a beveled edge in a manner to provide a penetrating point 18. At said end the inclined and straight edges of the knife 17 are suitably formed to provide sharpened or cutting edges 19, 20. The body 17 of the knife 16 is provided 5 with a pair of apertures adapted to register with ya pair of apertures provided on the post 13 adjacent the upper end of the latter to accommodate fastening elements 21 for rigidly but removably securing the knife in operative position on the 10 post 13.
A substantially U-shaped guide frame 22 extends transversely of the bracket 10 inwardly from the end 12 of said bracket and at the bottom or closed end of the U, the guide frame 22 is provided with a pair of apertures adapted to register with a pair of apertures provided in the body of the bracket 10 for accommodating fastening elements 23 for rigidly securing the guide 22 in operative position relative to the knife 16.
In actual practice the flange 11 of the bracket 10 is provided with a pair of vertically spaced openings and is secured to a suitable support 24 through the medium of fastening elements 25 in manner suggested in Figures 1 and 2.
The hose 26, to be cut, is disposed transversely of the bracket 10 and is first punctured by the knife 16; after which, the hose 26, with the periphery thereof abutting the ends or vertical portions of the guide 22 is rotated in an anti-clockwise direction relative to the knife 16 until the tube is severed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a tool for severing flexible hose which will permit of the severing operation being accomplished quickly and conveniently in a minimum amount of time and without distortion or change in the cross sectional configuration of the hose or tubing.
Even though I have herein shownand described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a hose cutter comprising a bracket having an end adapted to be secured to a stationary element and a guide spaced from said end and parallel with it between which guide and said end pieces of hose of varying sizes can be placed resting on a surface of the bracket located between said end and the guide, and a knife having an end adapted to penetrate a rubber hose and an edge for cutting the hose,
said end projecting at an angle from the center, of said guide toward the surface of the bracket on which the hose is supported.
2. A tool for use in severing a tube of flexible resilient material comprising a bracket supported at one end, a guide frame disposed transversely on the bracket, the bracket having an end portion on the end beyond the guide frame, a tool post on said end located entirely beyond the guide frame, and a cutting tool mounted on said tool post and projecting downwardly at an angle to the horizontal through the guide frame, and having a downwardly extending tube penetrating and terminating slightly above said bracket adjacent the transverse median of the bracket, the bracket having a horizontal surface for supporting the tube to be cut, the cutting tool having a cutting edge between the guide member and said surface, whereby when a tube on the bracket is rotated in contact with the sides of said guide the tube will be trimmed off on a circumferential line.
