This invention relates to pattern reproduction and is disclosed as embodied in a pattern grading machine for cutting shoe upper patterns, of the type shown in United States Letters Patent' No. 1,079,022, issued November 18, 1913, on the application of C. been described in relation to a pattern-grading machine it is not necessarily limited to machines of thistype, or even to ltwodimensional as distinguished from three-dimensional machines.
A pattern reproducing machine contains two pantographs which geometrically magnify the length and widthof the model independently. That is, all lines drawn in the model pattern parallel to its length are multiplied in length bya constant, and all lines drawn in it parallel to its Width are multiplied in length by an independent constant, and reproduced in the workfp shoe upper part cut from a pattern so graded from `a` t 'model pattern will fit a last gradedl in the ordinary manner in a last lathe. Such lasts are,
however, unsatisfactory, particularly in the manufacture of womens shoes, because of the intolerable variations in toe spring introduced by the width grader and they have to be bent back to a satisfactory shape by sawing opposite slots and wedging one until the other closes, or by cutting a corrected last directly in a special lathe, such as is shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,362,183, issued December 14, 1920, on the application oi L. B. Whipple, or in United States Letters Patent No. 1,362,185, issued December 14,l
1920, on the application of Sl E. Boynton. Such corrected lasts cannot be fitted by uppers graded in the ordinary way, and it has been necessary to improve the pattern grading machine so that it will in effect bend the model or, in another way of looking at the matter, reproduce fromfrit a bent work piece. This problem has been treated in December 23, 1924, ontheapplication of R. M. Packard, and No. 1,807,195, issued May 26, 1931, othe application of E. H. Burke.
types mentioned, that is, for reproducing `solid or fiat patterns, comprise four primary instrumentalities, model holder, work holder, model follower and tool, interconnected bypantographic mechanism, whereby the movement of the follower around they pattern controls the movement of the tool around the work. These movements areto be considered as relative movements, becausey it is unnecessary thatall of the instrumentalities actually move. In the 'last lathe they all move:

For the purpose of dealing with the problem described above,D all four of the machines of the patents and applications mentioned embody the same fundamental principle. In each a move-` `nient ol' a primary instrumentality, in addition to that characteristic of the normal reproductional "action of the machine, is effected continuously in a certain directionduring a part of the reproduction. If the model and work are regarded as divided into corresponding series of thin laminae or strips (herein called differential elements) all parallelto the direction of this additional movement, they corresponding elements in the work will then appear impositions shifted relatively to those or their prototypes in the model; that-is, each will be slid a little along its neighbor. Thus the side profile of a last ork pattern produced from a given-model can be varied by such a shifting of dilerential elements in a vertical direction.
In the machine illustrated in Patent No. 1,520,075 `the model is moved parallel to its length and width independently, by means yof cams. The machine shown in Patent No. 1,807,195 is considerably simpler, but has dealt with entire success with the practical problems arising in the pattern grading shop, where the broader capability of the former machine is unnecessary. In both I these lmachines the desired distortion of the normal pantographic reproduction can be effected at any selected portions of the work.
It is a principal objectof the present inventionto` improve still further the two machines just mentioned without sacrificing any of their advantages. The invention will be better understood from a brief consideration of one specic problem, the solution ofwhich it simplifies. Suppose that it is desired to cut a 5B half pattern .(that' is, a pattern which will cover one side of a lastl from'a 4B model half pattern, and that the toe spring difficulty is to be corrected by dropping the shank portion gradually from the ball to the heel breastportions, by shifting one of the four primary instrumentalities widthwise while this portion of thegpattern is being formed. Next, considerthe problem of generating a 6B from the 4B. The basket comprises a block 68 (Fig. 2) sliding in the slot 64. Gn this block is pivoted a bell crank 70 (Figs. 2 and 3) having an integral slotted arc rI2 on its upper face. A block 74 is adjustable in this slot and is pivotally linked by a link 76 to the link 66, which has its end 78 formed as a slide, running on a tongue 80 pivoted on the block 68 about the pivotal axis of the bell crank 70. If the block 74 be adjusted in the slot 72 so that it is in alinement with the pivotal axis'` of the bell crank '70, rotation of the bell crank 'l0 has no eect on the link 66 and the carriage 30; but if it be anywhere else in the slot, its movement will impart a movement to the link 66 in addition to any regular width grading movement imparted to it by the width grading lever due to the adjustment of the block 68 off the center 56. This additional movement alters the eiective length of the link 66, this effective length being the distance from the pivot connecting the link to the carriage 30 to the pivot in the block 68.
The movement of the bell crank is accomplished by a link 82 pivoted to its arm and to a block 84 adjustable in a slotted member 86, which is pivoted on the axis 56. The member 86 is essentially a bell crank and is rotatable by a link 88 pivoted to the carriage 22. Therefore, the differential movement of the carriages in length grading will turn the member 86 and consequently the bell crank 70 which, through the links 76 and 66 and carriage 30, will move the cutter 34 in the widthwise direction. This movement, with any given adjustment, is obviously substantially proportional to the length grade. In other words, if this lateral shifting of the cutter be put into operation over a predetermined portion of a size 4 model, the total shift in the case of a 6 graded from this model will'be twice as great as in the case of a 5 graded from the model with the same adjustment of the shifting mechanism;
The shifting movement is started and stopped as follows: A pin 90 is provided, by means of which the member 86 and the width grading lever 54 can be rigidly locked together, and the link 88 has a telescope joint 92 with a` clamp which, when loosened, permits the two parts of the link' to slide on each other. When the pin 90 is out and the clamp 92 tight, the shifting mechanism is operative; when the pin 90 is in and the clamp loose, it is inoperative and the width grader acts in the regular way. The mechanism can thus be started and stopped at any time.
Fig. 3 shows the details of the basket. The slot 64 has a lower dovetailed portion and an upper channeled portion at one side. The block 68 rides in the channeled portion above the dovetail. A spindled block 94 rides in the dovetailed portion, the spindle passing up through the block 68. At the top of the block 68 is a knurled nut 96 which draws the block 94 up into the dovetail and clamps the block 63 in adjusted position.
The bell crank 'Z0 is pivoted on a round bossV 97 on the nut 96.
The construction of the length grading lever basket 50 is similar to that just described and its parts have been marked by primed corresponding numerals. relatively sliding parts, like the link 66, and its effective length is changed by the rotation of the bell crank '70'. The member 86 is swungby the link 38' which connects it to the Vcarriage 24.`

By this mechanism, a lengthwise movement of the cutter 34, in addition to the movement characteristic of ordinary operation ofthe machine, can be effectedwhenever desired by removingthe pin 90' and setting the clamp 92. it is produced by and is substantially proportional to the ordinary differential length grading movement of the carriages 22, 24. Thus, the length grading ratioV can be varied at desired parts of the work, without causing any jog in the periphery thereof.
The machine has so many overlying parts that a diagrammatic view (Fig. 4) has been provided. This is not to be understood as drawn to scale. Its object is merely to make the construction clear.
The illustrated mechanism comprising the bell crank 70 for moving the cutter widthwise may be called a shifting mechanism or an offsetting mechanism.` By this is meant, broadly, a mechanism for causing a movement of one primary instrumentality in the machine, or a relative movement of two of them, in a certain direction, the mechanism being operated by a movementof one of the instrumentalities vor a relative movement of two of them in a direction perpendicular to that of the first-mentioned movement. That is, a purely lengthwise movement eiected by the operator will cause a widthwise movement of thev sort described as offsetting or shifting. This phenomenon is to be understood as occurring in addition to the ordinary reproductional movement, if any, then occurring in the machine, and the result in the work is a compound of the two.
Themovement eiected by an oisetting or shiftl ing mechanism is independent of grading movements. Both types of movement take place independently.
The illustrated improved length grading'mechanism comprising the bell crank 70' is not a shifting or offsetting mechanism, as defined herein, since the movement it produces in addition to the regular grading movement is in the same direction as the movement which produces it. The term displacing mechanism or the like has been used in certain claims as generic to these two mechanisms.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. ina pattern reproducting machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a work holder, a model follower holder and a tool holder, grading mechanism connecting them constructed and arranged to produce actual movement oand relative movement between two oi them to reproduce a model in the model holder in a work piece in the work holder, and an additional driving connection located between the last two said instrumentalities for imparting to one of said four instrumentalities an additional reproductional movement in a certain direction, said last named mechanism being driven by relative movement of the two said relatively moving primary instrumentalities while both are actually moving.
2. In a pattern reproducing machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a
work holder, a model follower holderv and atool holder, grading mechanism connecting them for relative movement to reproduce a model in the model holder in a work piece in the work holder, mechanism for imparting to one of said instrumentalities an additional reproductional movement in a certain direction, said last-named mechanism being driven by relative movement of gholder, arranged for relative actually moving, and means mechanism into vand out of operation at any desired timeduring the reproduction of a work` piece.
3. 11. Ina pattern copying machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a work and a tool, a model wheel carriage and a tool carriage, grading mechanism connecting said vcarriages constructed and arranged to reproduce the model pantographically in .the work, and mechanism operated bythe grading mechanism, while acting in a certain direction, constructed and arranged to effect a shifting movement of one of said primary instrumentalities in a direction transverse to the said direction vof'action of the grading mechanism, said shifting movement being in addition to the movement of the shifted instrumentalitycharacteristic 'of the normal reproductional action of the machine.

13. 14. In a pattern reproducing machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a work holder, a model follower holder and a tool holder, grading mechanism interconnecting them for. relative movement to reproduce a model in the model holder in a work piece in the work holder, mechanism interconnecting two actually `moving said instrumentalities and operated by relative translational movement thereof for im-- parting to one of said four primary instrumentali- `ties a reproductional movement in a direction transverse to the last mentioned relative movef ment, and means for rendering said last-named mechanism operative and inoperative at will.
15. In a machine of the class described, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holding means, a work holding means, a model following means and a tool, a grading mechanism operatively connecting them and arranged to magnify or reduce a model ina work piece, and an offsetting device driven by the relative movement of two of the four primary instrumentalities which are actually moving during the reproduction and operating in a fixed plane constructed and arranged, without modifying the grading factor, to effect a displacement, parallel to the said fixed plane, of one of the said primary instrumentalities relatively to the others, in the reproduction of predetermined portions only of the model, such addition to the relative movement of the four primary instrumentalities characteristic of pantographic reproduction of the model in the work, and such displacement widthwise of at a point being reproduced, being determined by the lengthwise position respectively of such point.
53. In a machine of the class described for reproducing a plane model in a plane work piece, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holding means, a work holding means, a model following means and a tool, a grading mechanism operatively connecting them and operating in planes parallel to the planes of the model and work to magnify or reduce a model in a work piece comprising an oifsetting device driven by the relative movement of two of the four primary instrumentalities which are actually moving during the reproduction and constructed and arranged to modify the operative connection to effect a displacement, parallel to a said plane, of one of the said primary instrumentalities relatively to the others, without change in the grading factor, such displacement being in addition to the relative movement of the four primary instrumentalities characteristic of pantographic reproduction of the model in the work, and such displacement lengthwise of the work. at a point being reproduced, being determined by the widthwise position of such point respectively, and means for rendering the offsetting device operative at predetermined points of the work only.
54. In a pattern grading machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., amodel holder, a Work holder, a model follower and a tool and grading mechanism arranged to reproduce a model held in the holder in a work piece held displacement being inv the work,
in the work holder, and means for shifting one of the primary instrumentalities in a certain fixed direction, said means being operated by relative movement of two of said primary instrumentalities which are actually moving during the reproduction in a direction transverse to said iixed direction and comprising a driving mechanism and means whereby the driving mechanism may be caused to shift the shifting holder in the saiddirection or its opposite as desired, at predetermined portions only of the work.

In a pattern grading machine, four primary instrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a work holder, a model follower and a tool interconnected and arranged to reproduce a model held in the holder in a work piece held in the work holder, and means for shifting one of the primary instrumentalities in a ilxed direction, said means being operated by relative movement of two of said primary instrumentalities which are actually moving during the reproduction, said movement being ancillary to relative movement of the tool and work in a direction transverse to said direction and said means being operable during selectedportions only of a reproducing operation. l

In a pattern grading machine, four primary nstrumentalities, viz., a model holder, a work holder, `a model follower and a tool connected and arranged for relative movement to reproduce a model lying in a plane, in a work lpiece lying in a plane, and mechanism for effecting a relative movement between two ofthe said instrumentalities in a certain direction parallel to one of the said planes, in addition to the relative movement characteristic of the normal reproductional action of the machine, said mechanism being operated by a relative reproductional movement of two of said primary instrumentalities which are actually moving in a direction at right angles to the said certain direction, and means whereby said mechanism may be caused to operate or not at predetermined portions of the work.
