UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BALL COCK Herbert n. clemmons, stm-gis, Mich., signor to Scovill Manufacturing Compalrv, Sturgis,

Application April 2, 1934,A Serial No. 718,547
15 Claims.
Second, to provide a ball cock of this character having an eifective silencing means, the ball cock being simple and economical in its parts and very efficient in operation.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanygg ing drawing, in which: l
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a ball cock embodying the features of my invention, parts being broken away and shown in vertical section.
g Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figs. 1
and 3.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe silencing sleeve.
l0 In the embodiment of my invention illustrated by the drawing, numeral l indicates a supply pipe or riser which is mounted within the tank 2. This riser in the embodiment illustrated is provided at its upper end with a noz- ;5izle 3 terminating in an annular valve seat 4.
The riser has a shouldered enlargement 5 threaded into the valve casing 6 as illustrated.
The valve casing has a discharge chamber '1, an outlet 8 and a bore 9 in axial alinement with lo the riser 1. The valve casing also has a discharge pipe or tube 10 and a reil connection 11. The discharge or outlet 8 is well above the bottom of the discharge chamber.
The relatively thick tubular valve sleeve 12 l5 is threaded in the bore 9 for longitudinal adjustment and is provided with an annular flange 13 at its upper end. The sleeve depends into the chamber '7 of the valve casing and terminates below the valve seat with the lower por- ;0 tion of the sleeve surrounding the nozzle 3 in spaced relation. is provided with an annular V-tongue or rim 14 which is received by the annular V-groove 15 provided therefor in the bottom of the chamber 7. The tongue or rim 14 and groove At its lower end, the sleeve- 15 are spaced as shown so that the water is forced to pass downwardly from the valve seat and then upwardly between these parts. This annular V-passage or reverse passage effectively silences the flowing water when vthe silenc- 00 ing sleeve is properly adjusted. 'I'he sleeve is held in adjusted position by the thumb screw 16 which is threaded to the valve casing at 17 for coaction with the flange 13, the head of the screw engaging the top of the flange as shown. 55 A plunger-like valve 18 is arranged within.
the lower end of the valve being provided with facing 19 of flexible or resilient material such as rubber, leather or the like. The facing is held in place by the anged collar 20 threaded to the body of the valve.
The valve casing'is provided with a post v21 disposed opposite the thumb screw 18 and having an outwardly angled arm 22. The valve lever 23 is arranged through an opening 24 in the valve lstem 25 and has a curved end portion engaging the stem as shown to avoid transverse thrusts incident to the swinging of the valve lever. This lever is pivoted to the post 21 at 30 26 and is connected to the arm 27 carrying the float 28 by the link 29, the arm 27 being pivoted to the angled arm 22 of the post at 30.
When the valve is opened, the tubular valve sleeve l2 coacts with the annular groove 15 in 85 the bottom of the casing to provide a substantially noiseless discharge passage. The silencing sleeve is readily adjustable for maximum silence under particular conditions by screwing it inwardly or outwardly of the bore `in the casing after releasing it by backing off the screw 16.
The silencing sleeve is not only adjustable to produce substantially noiseless operation of the valve under'a wide range of pressure conditions, but is also entirely removable from the casing and is therefore readily renewable or may be cleaned as desired. My improved ball cock is very quiet in operation owing to the annular reverse ow discharge passage formed between the lower end of the silencing sleeve, the nozzle, the groove,` and the wall of the discharge chamber.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illuS- trate or describe other embodiments or adaptations, as it is believed this disclosure will enable those sklled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
