13 Claims.
This invention relates to a new and improved extractor preferably combined with a clothes washing machine.
The main object of our invention is to provide an extractor apparatus capable of being adjusted and used to discharge fluid back into the enclosing vat which preferably contains a mechanical washing element, or on the other hand, capable of such arrangement as to discharge fluid through an apertured trough on the vat cover to the exterior of the machine.
A further object resides in the fact that the cover is capable of adjustment to at least two different elevations with respect to the upper end of the extractor basket and in one of which it is operative, to discharge fluid from the basket to the exterior of the machine and in the other of which it is so placed as to permit discharge of fluid from the basket into the vat-particularly when it may be desirable to use soapy or other treated water for reuse.
Other objects and advantages related to the details of construction and to the form and relation of parts, all as will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view, partially broken away, of an apparatus incorporating my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation taken in the plane of line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Although our invention may be used incorporated with combined washing. and drying machines of different types, we have here shown it used in combination with a washing machine of the" dolly type, and a rotary extractor of a particular type embodying two coaxial baskets, the inner one being perforate and the outer one imperforate except as to discharge openings near the top. I
In the drawings, 1 is a washing machine comprising a main vat 2 in which is positioned a dolly'3.
The extractor 4 is positioned coaxially with the dolly 3 and above the same. The extractor 4 comprises an outside imperforate basket 5 having upwardly and outwardly flaringwalls and having adjacentits upper end, circumferentially spaced discharge slots 6.
On the upper end of basket 5 is positioned an inwardly extending imperforate flange 7; Inside of basket 5 and coaxial therewith is positioned a perforate basket 8. Baskets 5 and 8 are se-- cured together for simultaneous rotary motion.
When wet clothes are placed in the perforatebasket 8 and such basket together with basket 5 is rotated, the liquid in the clothes will be thrown outwardly through the perforations in basket 8 by centrifugal force and will impinge against the Wall of basket 5 and move upwardly along said wall and be thrown outwardly through the slots 6.
Forthe purpose of controlling the disposition of the liquid which is thrown outwardly through slots 6, we provide a cover 9 for vat 2 which carries on its under side a circumferentially extending flange 10 forming an annular trough.
The inner edge of flange 10 is in slightly spaced relation to the upper end of basket 5, and when the cover is in the lowered position, the flange 10 is beneath the slots 6 so that the liquid thrown outwardly from the basket 5 through the slots 6 will be deposited in the annular trough formed by the flange 10 and will move circumferentially of the flange 10 towards and out from a discharge spout 11 which is in communication with the trough formed by the flange 10.
As perhaps may best be seen from Figure 6, the flange 10 has 21. depending skirt 12 which abuts against a depending skirt 13 on cover 9 and is held securely in position by a bead indicated at -awhich is formed in skirts 13 and 12 after the parts have been assembled.
A gasket 14 of rubber or other appropriate material is secured to the outer face of skirt 13 of cover 9 to form a liquid tight connection between cover 9 and vat 2 when the cover 9 is in varied positions as hereinafter described.
When the clothes in the basket 4 are being subjected to a rinsing operation or to a blueing operation, it is desirable that the liquid extracted from the clothes be discharged outside of the vat 2 when the rinsing operation is being performed and outside of the vat 2 and into a blueing receptacle when the blueing operation is being performed, and this may be accomplished with the cover 9 in the loweredposition as just described.
When, however, it is desired to extract the liquid from clothes which have just been subjected to awashing operation in a washing fluid, it is desirable that the fluid extracted from the clothes be returned to thevat 2 so that the same may 'be re-used in a washing operationon a new batch of clothes. To accomplish this latter result in an easy and convenient way, we provide on cover 9, members having cam surfaces which we will presently describe. w
The number of such cam surfaces may be varied as"desired although weprefer ,to,use three, but as the construction and operation of such cam surfaces is the same no matter how many may be used, we will here refer in detail to only one of such cam surfaces;
Referring to Figures 4, 5 and 6, there is se- 9, as by welding, a substantially triangular cam surface 15.
We have described the cam surfaces 15 as being substantially triangular which is the case when they are developed as shown in Figure 4, although they actually follow the curvature of the cover 9.
Ilhe cam surface 15 has a recessed portion 16 at its lower end from which extends oppositely, upwardly and outwardly flaring faces 17 and 18.
For each cam surface 15, we provide on vat 2, an inwardly extending lug 19 held in position as by a screw 20 and washers 21 and 22.
The lug 19 is disposed in the path of movement of cam surface 15 so that when the cover 9 is partially rotated, one or the other of the faces 17 and 18 will ride upwardly on lug 19 to carry cover 9 upwardly until lug 19 is positioned in recess 16.
In Figure 4, we have shown in heavy lines, cover 9 in the lowered position with the cam surface 15 disposed beneath the lug 19, and we have shown in dotted lines, the position of cover 9 when the. same has been moved upwardly to bring lug 19 in registration with recess 16.
When lug 19 is in position in recess 16, the cover 9 may be partially rotated in either direction to cause either face 17 or face 18 of cam surface 15 to move downwardly on lug 19 to carry cover 9 to the lowered position.
For the purpose of providing a convenient means for partially rotating cover 9, we provide on cover 9 a pair of opposed knobs or handles 23.
The relation of parts is such that when the cover 9 has been partially rotated to bring it to the raised position shown in dotted lines on Figure 2, the flange 10 will have been raised above the slots 6 in basket 5 so that the liquid thrown outwardly from basket 5 will travel beneath the flange 10 and. will be deposited back into the vat 2.
The skirt 13 on cover 9 is sufficiently wide so that when the cover 9 is in the raised position, the skirt 13 will extend below the upper end of vat 2 to prevent the liquid being expelled from basket 5 from passing outwardly over the upper end of vat 2.
For the purpose of preventing any but a limited radial movement of cover 9 with respect to vat 2 so that the cam surfaces 15 may always be properly positioned with relation to lugs 19, we provide on cam surfaces 15, rubber bumpers as 24.
For the purpose of providing a convenient means for introducing rinsing or blueing fluid into the extractor 4, we prefer to have in the cover 9, a central aperture 26 in registration with the open end of basket 8.
In order that any liquid remaining in the vat 2 after the washing operation is completed may be conveniently removed, we provide a draw-off valve indicated at 2'7 on Figure 3.
The dolly 3 may be oscillated by various mechanisms and the rotation of extractor 4 may also be controlled in different ways.
We have found that a very satisfactory way of oscillating dolly 3 and rotating extractor 4 is by means of a mechanism shown and. described in an application of Peter E. Geldhof for a Combined clothes washer and drier, filed Dec. 11, 1930, Serial No. 501,570, and we have indicated a portion of such driving mechanism at 25 on Figure 2.
Although we have here shown a specific structure and form and relation of parts as an exempliflcation of an embodiment of our. invention, we do not desire to restrict ourselves to the exact size, shape or relation of parts, as various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim 1,-
1. In a combined washing and drying machine, a vat, a centrifugal extractor in the vat, means for operating the extractor, a cover for the vat,

said cover having a circumferential trough on its under face, and a discharge spout in communication therewith, means on the cover cooperating with means on the vat for moving the cover vertically when the latter is partially rotated.
3. In a combined washing and drying machine, a vat, a centrifugal extractor in the vat, means for operating the extractor, a cover for the vat, said cover having, a circumferential trough on its under face, and a discharge spout in communication therewith, cam surfaces on the cover, and cooperating lugs on the vat for moving the cover vertically when the same is partially rotated.
4. In a combined washing and drying machine, a vat, a centrifugal extractor in the vat, means for operating the extractor, a cover for the vat, said cover having a circumferential trough on its under face, and a discharge spout in communication therewith, substantially V-shaped cam surfaces on the cover, and cooperating lugs on the vat for moving the cover vertically when the latter is partially rotated in either direction.
5. In a combined washing and drying machine, a vat, a centrifugal extractor in the vat, means for operating the extractor, a cover for the vat, said cover having a circumferential trough'on its under face, and a discharge spout in communication therewith, means for moving the cover vertically when the same is partially rotated whereby the trough carried thereby will be moved into and out of the path of movement of liquid expelled from the extractor.
6. An extractor comprising a vat, a rotatable basket within the vat and formed with a discharge opening near its upper end, a cover for the vat provided with an annular trough surrounding the basket, means for supporting the basket and cover in two relatively adjustable positions, at one of which the trough is opposite the opening in the basket, and at another of which the trough is elevated abovethe opening in the basket.
'7. An extractor comprising a vat, a rotatable basket within the vat and formed with a discharge opening near its upper end, a cover for the vat provided with an annular trough surrounding the basket, and means for supporting the cover in two relatively adjusted positions with respect to the opening in the basket, said annular trough being ineffective in one of saidpositions to receive fluid discharged from said rotatable basket.
8. An extractor comprising a vat, a rotatable basket within the vat and formed with a discharge I opening near its upper end, a cover for the vat provided with an annular trough on its underside and surrounding the basket, and means for supporting the cover in two relatively adjust- 15 ed positions with respect to the opening in the basket, said cover being moved to its difierently adjusted positions by rotary movement of the cover with respect to the vat and said trough being inefiective in one of said positions to receive fluid discharged from said rotatable basket.
9. In a machine of the class described, a vat, an extractor basket mounted in the vat and provided with discharge openings near its upper end, means for rotating the basket, a cover removably mounted upon the upper end of the vat, said cover being provided with an annular trough on its under side surrounding the basket and positioned below said discharge openings so as to receive and collect fluid thrown outwardly through said openings, and means for supporting the cover in a second position with said trough above said discharge openings.
10. In a machine of the class described, a vat, an extractor basket mounted in the vat and provided with discharge openings near its upperend, means for rotating the basket, a cover removably mounted upon the upper end of the vat, said cover being provided with an annular trough on'its under side surrounding the basket and positioned below said discharge openings 50% to receive and collect fluid thrown outwardly through said openings, and means for supporting the cover in a second position with said trough above said discharge openings, said latter means becoming effective upon the relative rotation of the vat and cover.
11. In a machine of the class described, a vat, an extractor basket mounted in the vat and provided with discharge openings near its upper end,
means for rotating the basket, a cover removablymounted upon the upper end of the vat, said cover being provided with an annular trough on its under side surrounding the basket and positioned below said discharge openings so as to receive and collect fluid thrown outwardly through said openings, a plurality of pins supported by and extending inwardly from the wall of the vat, cam members secured to the cover and provided with recesses for receiving said pins, said cam members acting to elevate said cover with respect to the vat upon rotation of the cover to bring said recesses in registration with said pins.
12. In a combined washing and drying machine, a container, a drying extractor within said container, means for operating said drying extractor, a cover for said container; fluid-conveying means on the undersurface of said cover, and means whereby, upon manual movement of said cover to another position on said container, said fluid-conveying means is rendered inefiective to receive fluid discharged from said extractor.
13. In a combined washing and drying machine, a container, a drying extractor within said container, means for operating said drying extractor, a cover for said container, fluid-conveying means secured to said cover, and means whereby manual rotary movement of said cover will move said fluid-conveying means into and out of the path of fluid discharged from said drying extractor.
