Description

NOV. 20, G KELLER v "COMBINATION TOOL Filed April 50, 1934 l/V VENTOR George If?! Z e1;
M #5 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 20, 1934 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to combination tools and more particularly to that type where a single instrument embodies a number of devices so formed ,and combined together as to produce a tool of the commonly designated plier type.
The primary object of the invention is to furnish a combination tool of the indicated character equipped with various devices and accessories by means of which the user may draw a a key, or manipulate a screw; said tool also being nail, clip a wire, punch a ticket, grip a pipe, turn adjustable and provided with a suspension means whereby it can be conveniently carried on the person, or hung up, as desired.
Another object is to provide a combination tool which is particularly, although not essentially, useful for taxi and motor vehicle drivers, in that it combines in one tool a series of devices or instrumentalities commonly in much demand for frequent usage by such drivers.
With the stated and other objects in view this invention consists generally in the various features of construction and combinations of parts,
all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
nents, having wrench-formation inner ends and a slotted-pivotal connection at '7, of conventional form, whereby said shank components may be relatively moved so that the jaw gripping portions 8 can be adjusted for use upon pipes, or
H other members of different diameters, in the known way.
One of the shank components, for example, is formed at its outer end into a screw-driver bit 9; while the other component outer end is somewhat enlarged to constitute a socket wrench or key 10, having an inwardly-tapering rectangular or,
other desired section, hollow 11 whereby, taximeter and similar recording instruments may be wound-up, adjusted or set. Or said socket wrench or key may, obviously, be used for turning faucet plugs and the like which have had the handles or similar means removed to prevent illicit tampering therewith.
Either of the shank components, 6 for example, is provided with a suspension loop 12, whereby the tool can be hung from the belt of the user, or otherwise supported easy of access for ready use.
Formed integral with the shank component 5, irmer end or head portion, is a lug 13, having a pin or fulcrum stud 14 rigidly secured therein, said stud affording pivotal support for a punch lever 15 having a suitably-shaped-die or orifice l6 therethrough. This punch lever 15 is under the action of a suitable spring 17, normally maintaining the die orifice 16 away from coaction with a conformative punch 18, mounted in the shank component 5, while a suitable stripper 19 is associated with said punch 18 to free a conventional ticket, transfer or exchange, in a manner obvious to those acquainted with such devices.
Actuation of the ticket-punching means is effected by providing the shank component 6 with a cam portion 20 for engagement with the heel of the punch lever 15, or that portion thereof remote from the die orifice end 16; all as will be readily understandable from Figs. I and IV, more particularly. It will, of course, be readily appreciated'from Fig. I, that the opposed gripping portions 8 normally occupy the position shown, or with their tips 21 slightly separated, so that when the shank components 5, 6, are grasped by taking a hold upon their serrated portions 22, the cam 20 will rock the punch lever 15 on its pivot 14 to effect the ticket piercing operation. v Obviously, when using the tips 21 as nippers, the punch lever 15 will be operated, as before set forth, but without punching, inasmuch as no ticket would be inserted when the tool is so used; or when the parts 23 of the shank components 5, 6, are employed for wire cutting, in the known way.
From the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the drawing, it will be observed. that I have provided a combination tool embodying six commonly used instrumentalities, or devices, which are so arranged and interrelated as to be usable with ease and without interference one with another. Furthermore. the improved combination tool of my invention may be made in various sizes, or its details of construction modified, without departing from the essence of said invention, as defined in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a pair of members pivotally connected intermediate lever and on opposite sides thereof, said cam being adapted to engage one end of the lever' during actuation of the members to swing the lever in opposition to the spring and stripper member simultaneously, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE KELLER.
