Description

Nov. 13, 1934. c. H. MORROW ADAPTER FOR DRAFT RE GULATOR S Filed April 6, 1935 5: z I 5; AT! 75% Patented Nov. 13, 1934 ADAPTER FOR. DRAFT REGULATORS Clarence H. Morrow, Shaker Heights, Ohio, as-
slgnor to The Hotstream Heater Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application April 6, 1933, Serial No. 664,792.
5 Claims.
a cylindrical thimble, extending from the breaching to support the regulator itself somewhat spaced from the breaching itself; and the invention has for its object the provision of means for accomplishing such a mounting wherein the -diameter of the thimble is substantially the transverse dimension of the breaching, whether the breaching be of cylindrical or rectangular type. Other objects of the invention are to provide for convenience in accomplishing the installation, and
particularly to provide that in the assembly the breachingshall not be weakened.
The exact nature of this invention together with further objects and advantages thereof will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of the invention as applied to a square breaching; Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged details in section, longitudinal and transverse respectively of the thimble and associated parts, the section of Fig. 2 being indicated by the line 22, Fig. 3, and that of Fig. 3 being indicated bythe line 3-3, Fig. 2; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views illustrating the invention as applied to a round breaching, the 30:
views corresponding generally to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 respectively, the section of Fig. 6 being that of the line 6 6, Fig. 5, and the section of Fig. 5 being in the central plane of the parts appearing Fig. 6.
With reference now to the disclosure of Figs. 1-3, 1 is the base part and 2 the damper part of the draft regulator, the details of which are immaterial here but which may be as illustrated and described in my Patent No. 1,905,734. 3 represents a horizontal rectangular breaching to the side face 4 of which the draft regulator is to be applied, supported in spaced relation from the breaching by a thimble ring 5, the thimble ring being secured with the breaching by a base casting 6 which includes features of the invention as will appear.
It will be noted that the size of the draft regulator is substantially that of the breaching, so that the diameter of the thimble ring 5 is substantially the same as the transverse dimension of the breaching side 4. Hence the mere cutting of a circular opening in the breaching side, to fit the thimble ring, would greatly reduce the strength of the breaching.
The base 6 of the thimble assembly is preferably of cast metal, of generally annular form. It has an annular flange part 7 outstanding'from the reaching to receive and position'the thimble ring shown Fig. 2 and a flange part adapted to bear against the breaching, extending inwardly of the flange part '7 as at 8 and outwardly of the flange part, 7 as at 9, with ears 10 by which ittmay be bolted to the breaching as indicated a 11. Y
That the thimble ring may be secured in'itsposition fitting over the baseflange 7, after the base is mounted on the breaching, bolt receiving bosses-12 are provided in the flange 9 with boltreceiving slot openings 13' as shown Fig." 3, and each boss is recessed as at 14, Fig. 2, to-receive the head of a bolt in its slot 13, clear the head from the near face of the breaching and lit the head to prevent turning of the bolt. Thethimbl ring 5 is provided with angle brackets 15 each secured with the ring as by a bolt 16'and positionedtherecn to register with one of the bosses 1'2. A bolt 17 serves to secure each bracket 15 with the base 6, by insertion into the corresponding slot 13 as shown in the drawing.
At opposite sides of the base 6 the inner flange part 8 is extended inwardly to form 'a pair of oppositely disposed webs 18. Thus while the typical section through the base 6 is of T'characteristic as indicated at the top of; Fig. '2, at the webs 18 the typical section-is of L characteristic as indicated at the bottom of Fig. 2'. f
In practice, to mount the draft regulator upon the breaching the base ring Sis first placed against the breaching, with the base so disposed-thatthe webs 18 will lie adjacent the edges. The-breaching is then marked through the openings in the ears 10 for holes to receive thebolts 11. 'The base is then removed, the breaching drilledto receive the bolts and the base replaced and positioned by the bolts. Then, using'the base as'a templ'et, the breachingopening is out, following the outline of the flange 8, the base again being used as a templet. As the opening is made in thebreaching, it is reinforced by the base, so that itis not materially weakened. 1 Aftertheopening is 'com pleted, nuts are turned onto the bolts 11 and the bolts tightened. The side of the breaching now has an opening substantially circular and of diameter substantially as great as the breaching side, yet the breaching is so reinforced by the base and particularly by the flange webs 18 that the breaching as a whole is as strong as before.
The thimble ring 5 is next positioned over the flange '7 of the base and there secured as by bolts 1'7 inserted in the bosses 12. The draft regulator assembly is then mounted on the end of the thimble ring in the usual manner.
With reference now to the. embodiment of Figs. 4-6, where the breaching 3a is cylindrical, 5 and of the same diameter as the thimble ring 511, the base for mounting the ring on the breaching is in two pieces 6a and 6b. These pieces are identical castings, flanged as at 20 to receive bolts 21 whereby they are secured together to form a short cylindrical section terminating at one end in a transverse plane and at the other end to fit the breaching, with an outstanding flange 22 overlying the breaching. The flange 22 is provided with openings to receive bolts 23 whereby the base assembly may be secured to the breaching and the pointed extremities of the assembly lying on opposite sides of the breaching are provided with openings to receive a stay bolt 24' extending across through the hollow of the breaching generally diametrically thereof. The stay boltis provided with nuts 25 within the breaching and nuts 26 outside the breaching, and is threaded at its ends sufliciently to allow enough inwardadjustment of the nuts 25 that the stay bolt may be inserted.
At its outer extremity the base assembly has a peripheral flange Qa'and longitudinally extending flange 7a to receive and position the thimble ring 5a. The flange 9a having simple ears 2'! to receive bolts 17a by which the thimble ring, bracketed at' a as before, may be secured to the base assembly in the same general manner as in theembodiment of Figs. 1-3. The draft regulator 1a with its damper 2a. is mounted on the thimble .ring 5a as before.
The mounting operations are also generally as before. The base assembly is first made by bolting the base parts 6a and 6b together by bolts 21. The assembly is next placed on the breaching in proper position and used as a templet in marking the breaching for holes to receive the bolts 23 and the stay bolt 24. The base is then removed and the breaching drilled for these bolts after which the base is replaced and there secured by insertion of the bolts 23 and insertion of temporary short bolts in the holes for the'stay bolt 24. The opening is next cut inthe breaching using the base as a templet, after which nuts are placed on the bolts 23 and the stay bolt 24 in- 50. iserted, working through the opening. All of these bolts then being tightened, the thimble ring and draftregulator are mounted as before.
It will-be appreciated that in either form of the device the manner of cutting the necessary opening in the breaching will depend upon the material of the breaching. Thus if of metal, a torch may be used. While in either case the opening may be out after mounting of the base upon thebreaching to reinforce the latter, if the 60, .breaching have sufficient external support, of course, the opening may be out before mounting the base, the opening having been laid out with a marker using the base as a templet.
