IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS.

, Specification forming part of Letters latent No. 197,978, dated December 11, 1877; application filed September 18, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID MANBECK, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a Medical Compound and new article of manufacture, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to prevent and relieve human sufiering occasioned by diseases of the mucous membrane of the nose, throat, and lungs-such as catarrh, bronchitis, and all pulmonary affections. It consists in pre paring and using mullein-leaves and vegetable tar, in the manner hereinafter fully set forth.

To one pound and a half (11} lb.) of dried,

broken, and granulated mullein-leaves (Verbascum thapsus) I add about one pound (1 lb.) of

vegetable tar, produced by the burning of the resinous wood of any of the pine-tree species. I

' arising from the combustion thereof inhaled by diseased persons to relieve suffering, and to cure affections of the nose, throat, and lungs.

Persons in health may indulge in smoking it to gratify an inherent desire for narcotics, and to prevent diseases of the nose, throat, and lungs.

My compound may be made in small or large quantities, in the proportions named, and put mean r eea .natnninnartridgeserlanted =11 f'oi' hll es By smoking .m componnd in a pipe, or in the form of a cigar cigarette, print-any other way"by""which"the fumes arising from its consumption by fire can be inhaled, the medical healing virtues of the mullein and tar are readily applied to the afiected parts, and a pleasant, eflicacious means of preventing and curing diseases of the nose, throat, and lungs is provided by myinvention.

I am aware that mullein and vegetable tar are well-known remedial agents that have been extensively used in the-healing art; but I claim that my manner of combining them to produce a new compound in which they can be simultaneously used by means of fire is novel and greatly advantageous.

I claim as my invention- 1. A medical compound for vaporizing or fumigating purposes, made of mullein and tar, inthe manner described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a cigar or cigarette of which the filling is mullein and vegetable tar, prepared in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
