ARCHIBALD MURRAY, OF TROY, NEV YORK.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,790, dated March 30, 1858.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD MURRAY, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented an Improved Adjustable Vrench; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 are plans of the wrench when set for use; Fig. 3 a plan of the same when the movable jaw is free to be set in any required position; Fig. L a perspective view of the fixed jaw and the stock; Fig. 5 a perspective -view of the movable jaw; and Fig. 6 a perspective view of the ring or collar by which the movable jaw is secured to the shank or stock of the fixed one.
The same letters refer to like parts -in all the figures.
The product of my invention is an adjustable wrench of very convenient form for use, andstrong and durable, and which can be manufactured at a very cheap rate; the same consisting, independently of a wooden handle, Z, which may or may not be aflixed, of three separate pieces, A, B, O, each of which may be cast of metal, without the use of a core in casting, and at once slipped together, without any further labor, to make the wrench ready for market or use.
The part or casting A, shown separate in Fig. 4, consists of the fixed jaw, a, and its shank or stock, b, with an extension, c, upon which a wooden handle, Z, may be fixed, or which may be cast larger to fit the hand of the user. The piece or casting, B, seen distinct in Fig. 5, consists of the movable ,jaw Z and its shank e. The part C, seen separate in Fig. 6, is a simple ring or collar of such size as to just fit around and slide upon the larger portions of the shanks Z9, c, when put together as shown in Figs. l and 2. I generally make it slightly tapering, casting it without the use of a separate core. I prefer to cast the parts A, B and O of iron and make them malleable.
The shanks o, e, are cast with teeth, f, f, upon their inner or adjacent and opposite faces; which teeth fit together, as shown by the drawings, when the jaws are at various distances apart; and prevent the shank e, when set for use, from being slid upon the fixed one, Z9, either toward, or from, the fixed jaw, a; and thereby prevent the ring O, which holds the shanks together, from becoming disagreeably set or stuck fast, upon the shanks when a powerful strain is put upon the parts in turning screws or nuts. The tongues g, g, and grooves, h, L, upon the shanks fit together and prevent the movable jaw from turning sidewise upon the fixed shank while the wrench is in use.
Instead of casting the shanks with the rack-teeth f, f, and the longitudinal tongues g, g, and grooves, h, L, in the particular manner shown in the drawings, the inner faces of the shanks may have any kind of shallow teeth which will both allow the jaws to be set at various distances apart and pre vent the movable jaw from turning sidewise or sliding endwise when held to the fixed shank by the ring orcollar O.
A portion, z', of the movable shank e, Figs. l, 3 and 5, or of the fixedone, Z), Fig. 2, or of both of the shanks, is madeV of such smaller size than the other portion that when the ring or collar is around such smaller parts the movable jaw can be disengaged from the fixed shank, as seen by Fig. 3, and set in any required position allowed by the teeth of the shanks. The projection, j, keeps the movable jaw from falling out when the ring is left opposite to the smaller part of the shanks.
Now, my improved adjustable wrench can be distinguished from every other heretofore produced by the fact that it is essential to my wrench that the shanks with their jaws should be held together in every direction and with Athe jaws at various distances apart by means of a ring or collar which surrounds and slides upon both shanks together, aided by suitable teeth upon the .inner sides of the shanks, and that some part of one or both of the shanks over which the ring can be slid should be lreduced in size next to the ring to allow the jaws to be disengaged and reset at various distances apart, substantially as hereinbefore described and shown by the annexed drawings. But the form of the three essential pieces or castings which constitute my improved wrench may of course be Varied Without destroying the features which characterize iny invention.
What I elailn as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- My improved adjustable Wrench, in which the movable j aw is fastened to the Xed one by means of a ring or collarwhich surrounds and slides upon the Shanks of both jaws together, substantially as herein described.
ARCHIBALD MURRAY.
