Referringwith more particularity to the accompanying drawing, 10 denotes the rear por-- tion of an elongated casing ofthe type which is adapted in accordance with the usual practice plug 13. For receiving the lower end wall 16 of the casing is made with an annular g9 vertically extending bearing 17 through which the vertical pintle extends. Opposite the cupshaped bearing 15, there is rigidly secured to the pintle by arivet 18 or otherwise a ball-race bearing 19, and suitable anti-friction balls 20 are disposed between the bearings 19and 15, the last-named having for the balls 20 a suitable annular raceway or groove 21. The lower plate 23 at the opposite sides of the longitudinal slot 25 therein is slidably, engaged in suitable annular guides 30 provided'for the purpose in the bearing 19, while the" upper plate 22 is engaged for sliding movement in similar annular guides 31 produced in an enlargement 32' on the vertical pintle.
For effecting longitudinal movement of the frame or yoke by the rotary movement of the vertical pintle, I provide cam devices 32 and 33 upon the pintle and roller devices 34, 35 and 35 upon the frame or yoke, the roller device 34 being arranged to cooperate with the cam device 32, while the roller devices 35, 35', being respectively right and left rollers, as shown in Figs. 2 to 4, cooperate with the cam device 33. The cam device 32 is secured by a rivet 36 or equivalent means to the pintle immediately above the top plate 22, and as herein represented the cam. device 33, also rigid with the pintle, occupies a position between the top and bottom plates 22'and'23. The roller device 34 is mounted for operation over the top plate 22 by means of a pin 37 which is secured in the front portion 24 of the frame. -The right and left rollers 35, 35' are mounted between the top and bottom plates 22 and 23 at the right and left sides of the frame near the rear end thereof, these roller devices being operatively mounted upon pins 38 which connect the said top and bottom plates as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The cam device 32, rigid with the pintle, is essentially a guide cam, shaped to cooperate with the roller 34 so as to maintain the frame or yoke in that position in which the cam 33 will be kept in contact with the rollers 35, 35' for effecting the movement of the frame. In other words, the two cams and three rollers always provide three control points, the roller 34 and one of the two rollers 35,35 (depending on the direction of the rotation of the pintle) serving as means for guiding the frame while the other of the two rollers 35 or 35 (as the case may be) serves as means for forcing the movement of the frame. Under clockwise movement of the pintle (as viewed for instance in Fig. 2) the cam 33 acting on roller 35 forces movement of the frame rearwardly; and under anti-clockwise movement of the pintle, said cam acting on roller 35 also forces movement of the frame in a rearward direction. By this arrangement of cams and rollers, the pintle can be moved in either direction through a complete circle of 360. i
In Fig. 2, I show the parts in the relative posi-- tions which they occupy when the door is in closed position, the frame in this case being drawn forwardly so that'the rear ends of the slots 25 are in proximity to the rear side of thepintle; and in Fig. 3 I. show the parts in the relative positions which they occupy when the door has been opened through an angle of 180 and in this case .it will be seen that the forward ends proximity to the forward side of the pintle. It will thus'be eviden ha means or spring. Whenever the pintle is turned beyond 180, the frame moves forwardly again towards its initial position. Manifestly, a reverse movement of the pintle towards its initial position from any position to which it may have been moved, will result in forward movement of the frame .to the initial position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Being movable through a circle of 360, the cam mechanism of the present invention has a universal character so that it is suitable for use in door check and closer constructions for a single-acting door, a double-acting door, and as well for either a right or left-hand door.
The device of the present invention is a simple, compact unitary construction, consisting of the pintle, the reciprocable frame or yoke, the two cams on the pintle and the three roller devices on the frame. Upon the removal of the screw threaded plug 13, this unitary construction can be installed or removed as an entity. The entity device is installed by inserting it through opening 12 in such manner that the pintle is passed through the bearing 17, after which the screw plug 13 is manipulated so as to apply the pintle to the cup-shaped bearing 15 whereupon the plug is screw-threaded in place in the threaded opening 12. In the type of easing illustrated herein, a screw plug 39 is fitted in the top wall 16 and in such position that when this screw plug is removed, there will be an opening 40 with which the openings 41 in the cylinder 28 may be alined so that the pin 28' can by insertion through the opening 40 be applied to the openings 41 in the cylinder and the opening 2'7 in the extension whereby to couple the yoke with the cylinder.
It is important to note that the cam mechanism of my invention cannot get out of order and that the parts thereof cannot be damaged or injured, regardless of the extent or direction of movement of the pintle and consequently of the door.
For mounting the door on the pintle, any suitable or approved bar may be applied to the lower edge of the door in a manner well understood. In the present instance, I show a fragmental bar 42 of a type suitable for attachment to the door, said bar having a lateral head 42' formed with a vertical eye 43 adapted to fit around the L top portion of the pintle above the bearing 17. Novel means are provided whereby adjustably to secure the bar 42 (and hence the door supported thereon) to the pintle. This means consists in providing the top portion of the pintle at one side thereof with a vertically extending notch 44 concavely curved at 45. In open communication with the eye 43, the head 42 is cut away to provide a vertical recess 46 that will come opposite the notch 44. For fitting partly in the notch 44 and partly in the recess 46, I provide a wedge or block member 47 one side 48 of which is of a convex form to fit the concavely curved portion 45. The opposite side of the wedge member 47 has a recess 49 shaped to receive the conical inner end 50 of a screw bolt 51 which is threaded through a screw-threaded opening 52 provided in the head 42. With this simple construction, it will be evident that before tightening the screw bolt 51, the head with the wedge and hence thevbar with door thereupon may be accurately adjusted in a vertical direction with respect to the casing 16.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in considerable detail, it is realized that in practice various changes and alterations may be made therein, and further that the invention is capable of embodiment in many different constructions. It has been sought herein to illustrate only such an embodiment as will suffice to exhibit the character of the invention. Reservation is, therefore, made to the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or the scope of the appended claims. l
I claim:
1. In a door check and closer, a reciprocable connecter having arms consisting of spaced parallel plates longitudinally slotted, a rotatable pintle extending transversely through the slots of said plates to provide for the reciprocation of the plates upon the pintle and With the pintle at its opposite sides engageable with the two spaced plates whereby to prevent any lateral displacement of the plates and hence of the connecter in any position of the connecter, a cam carried by the pintle adjacent the outer face of one plate and operating on a roller at the front of the plate and in the plane of the longitudinal center of the slot, a second cam carried by the pintle between the plates and operating on right and left rollers carried by the arms between the plates and disposed laterally of the slots, said cams having peripheries mutably shaped and so cooperating with the rollers as to cause during each rotation of the pintle a complete reciprocation backwardly and forwardly of the connecter in the direction of the length of the slots with a minimum of friction between the pintle andthe arms.

In a door check and closer which includes a vertical pintle and a horizontal connecting bar associated therewith to provide for the reciprocation of the bar by the rotation of the pintle, flat vertically spaced and longitudinally disposed arms integrally connected with the bar, having slots therein extending in the direction of their length and in which the pintle is engaged for rotation, cams rigidly attached to the pintle, one between the arms whereby to prevent movement of the arms axially of the pintle, and one at the outer face of one arm, said cams being thus attached adjacent their reduced and rounded heel portions and extending and expanding therefrom in the same direction and in horizontal planes to rotate parallel with the planes of the arms, the peripheries of said cams opposite their heel portions being differently shaped and the periphery of one extending well beyond the outline of the periphery of the other, a pair of rollers engaging the periphery of one cam and located adjacent one end of an arm but respectively at opposite sides of the long axes of the slots, a roller engaging the periphery of the other cam at the other end of the arm and having the axial center disposed coplanar with the longitudinal center of the slots, said cams rotating with the pintle and providing both for partial and complete revolution of the pintle in either direction and cooperating with the rollers and mutably shaped with respect to each other and in respect of the long axes of the slots to provide for direct reciprocation of the connecter in the direction of the long axes of the slots and without lateral displacement from the rotating pintle the opposite sides of which have engagement with the two vertically spaced arms in all positions of the latter.
