4 Glaims.
This invention relates to new and useful inrprovements in a combined brush and paste tube.
The invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is characterized by a paste tube portion of pliable material having a rigid element extended along one side and a rigid discharge neck atone end connected with said rigid element so that the rigid portion of the tube may be used as a handle for manipulating the brush.
Still further the invention contemplates mounting the brush upon the rigid discharge in a manner so that the discharge from the tube engages upon the bristles of the brush, and the 1.) brush itself is held in a relatively fixed position to the rigid element of the paste tube.
As an another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a cap for normally encasing the brush when not in use so as to prevent evaporation of the contents of the tube.
Still further the invention proposes an arrangement whereby the brush may be angularly adjusted relative to the rigid element for convenience of the user.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a construction whereby the body of the brush is integral with the rigid element of the tube of pliable material.
As another one of the objects of this invention. it is proposed to construct a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The combined brush and paste tube according to this invention comprises a paste tube 10 of pliable material having a rigid element 11 extending one side and terminating on one end in a conical shaped portion 11. A rigid discharge necklZ projects from the center of the conical portion 11'. As illustrated in Figs. 1-8 the pliable material 10 is attached along its edges upon the edges of the rigid element 11 and both of these parts together constitute the tube. Obviously to collapse the tube it isnecessary the pliable portion thereon be pressed against the rigid portion. At the front end the rigid element 11 is enlarged as indicated by reference numeral 13 which serves as a foundation for the discharge l2 and which also forms a grip portion for the thumb of a person using the device. The rear end 1 1 of the rigid element 11 is turned around and engages against the rear end of the pliable material 10.
A brush 15 is mounted upon the discharge neck 12 and is formed with a passage 16 for the discharge from the tube to enter upon the bristles 17 of the brush. The passage 16 is arranged at an inclination to the rear face of the brush so that the brush is held at an inclination when engaged upon the discharge neck 12 which inclination is satisfactory and convenient in engaging the brush, for example, against a shoe in the event that the combined brush and paste tube is used for the polishing of shoes. Preferably the inclination of the brush 15 may be such that a portion thereof rests against the front of the conical shaped portion 11' so that the conical shaped portion acts as a reinforcement to steady the brush and prevent undue stress upon the discharge neck 12.
A cover cap 18 is engaged over the bristles of the brush and threadedly engages upon the brush setting for normally covering the brush and closing the paste tube. This cap is formed with diametrically opposite thumb recesses 19 to facilitate gripping of the cap for the purpose of unscrewing it from the brush 15. The brush 15 is shown of circular construction see Fig. 4, which construction allows the cap to be threadedly engaged thereon. In Fig. 5 a modified'iorm of the invention has been disclosed in which provision is made for engaging and removing a conventional pliable paste tube upon and from the device. According to this form the combined brush and paste tube comprises a rigid hollow semi-cylindrical handle 20 with a front conical shaped portion 11' which is formed with an opening 21 at its front end through which the discharge neck 22 of a conventional pliable tube 23 may engage. The rear end of the handle 20 is formed with aspring clip 24 adapted to clamp downwards upon and hold the rear end of the tube 23. The brush 15 is threadedly engaged upon the discharge neck 22 of the tube 23 and its back face rests against the outer face of the conical portion 11'. In all other respects this device is similar to the form previously described and corresponding parts may be recognized by similar reference numerals.
When the tube 23 has been completely emptied, its rear end may be forced from the grip of the spring clip 2%, the brush 15 may next be unscrewed irom the discharge neck 22 and then the tube removed from the handle. A new tube may be substituted.
In Fig. 6 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in which provision is made for varying the angular relation of the brush to the handle portion of the device. According to this form of the invention a frusto-spherical socket 25 isthreadedly engaged upon the discharge neck 12 and is formed with a passage 26 which is capable of directing the material from the tube upon the bristles of the brush 15. The body portion of the brush is formed with a frusto-spherical zone engaging in intimate contact with the sm'face of the frusto-spherical socket 25 so that the brush may be tilted to various inclinations. A trunnion 27 is arranged upon the socket 25 and engages opposite sides in the spherical zone of the brush 15 so as to limit moving of the brush relative to the socket 25 in one direction. The trunnions 27 are arranged on the horizontal axis which allows the brush to be pivoted about the vertical axis.
A cam collar 28 is rotatively mounted upon the discharge neck 12 and upon the end of the paste tube and serves as an abutment for the back side of the brush 15 to limit the pivoting of the brush. As illustrated, the cam collar 28 is formed with a thick portion at the top and a thin portion at the bottom so that when rotated 180 it will have the thick portion at the bottom and the thin portion at the top. Then it is possible for the brush 15 to rest against the thick portion of the cam collar 28 and assume a position indicated by the dot and dash line 29 which indicates the rear face of the body of the brush in its new theoretical position. Preferably the curved surface of the cam collar 28 should be such that the curvature from the thin side of the collar to the thick side varies gradually which arrangement allows the brush 15 to assume various other inclined positions. When this device is used the brush is manipulatedby the handle, that is, the rigid element 11, and is so held that when the bristles engage against ones shoe the back of the brush will be in engagement with a portion of the face of the cam collar 28. In other respects this form of the device is similar to the preferred form and similar parts may be recognized by corresponding reference numerals.
In Fig. 7 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in which the combined brush and paste tube is arranged with the brush body integral with the tube. More particularly in this form of the invention the tube comprises a rigid element 11 connected with a pliable portion 10 similar to the arrangement in Fig. 1. The tube terminates in a discharge neck 12 which is integral with the portion 11 thereof and which is also integral with an inclined disc-shaped portion 15 which constitutes the base of the brush. The bristles 1'7 are bent and project from the base 15. The discharge neck 12 extends completely through the base 15' of the brush so that the contents of the tube may be discharged upon the bristles. In other respects this form of the device is similar to the previous forms and corresponding parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals.
The brush is particularly intended for shoes so that shoe polish pastes may be discharged upon the shoes and properly rubbed in. The brush element portion of the device may be substituted by other similar brushes in which the brushes are of different hardness so as to be best suited for any particular purpose. Still further the brush need not have bristles at all but may be any conventional artificial brush which is constructed of leather, cloth or the like.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications com-. ing within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 1 i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:'-
1. In a combined brush and paste tube, arigid element for extending along one side of a paste tube of pliable material and having a front conical shaped portion with a rigid discharge neck for said paste tube and a brush mounted at an inclination and on its back side on said discharge neck and formed with a passage for the dis-, charge from said neck to the bristles thereof, the outer wall of the conical shaped portion engaging against the back of said brush.
2. In a combined brush and paste tube, a rigid element for extending along one side of a paste tube of pliable material and having a front conical shaped portion with a rigid discharge neckfor said paste tube with an axially threaded por-' tion and a brush with a. threaded opening inclined to its back threadedly engaging said threaded portion, and formed with a passage in the discharge neck from said neck to the bristles thereof, and a wall portion of the outer wall of said conical shaped portion engaging said back of the brush.
3. A combined brush and paste tube, comprising a paste tube of pliable material having a rigid;
element extending along one side and a rigid dircharge neck at one end and connected with said,
rigid element, and a brush pivotally mounted on said discharge neck and formed with a passage for the discharge from said neck to the bristles thereof, said brush being mounted at an inclination, and means associated with said brush and :1
collar rotative upon the discharge neck and end' of said paste tube and having a thin side and varying gradually to a thick side diametrically opposite the thin side and forming a rest for the rear face of the brush to hold the brush at an inclination.
