Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDWVIG GREINER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN QONSTRUCTING DOLL-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,720, dated March 30, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG GREINER, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improved Mode ofMakingDolland other Figure Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in applyinglinen, silk,or muslin to the heads, which process makes them so substantial that they will not break by falling.
The manner of preparation is as follows: One pound of white paper, when cooked, is beatfine, and then the water is pressed out, so as to leave it moist. To this is added one pound of dry Spanish whiting, one pound of rye flour, and one ounce of glue. This is worked until it is well mixed. Then it is rolled out with a roller to the required thinness. After it is cut into pieces required for the mold it is molded. Wherever there is a part projecting out-for instance the nose-it must be filled with linen cr muslin. This linen or muslin must be well saturated with a paste, which consists of ryeflour, Spanish whiting, and glue. After the heads are molded, each head consisting of two parts, they are left to get about half dry. Then of'the linen or muslinsaturated with paste is laid inside of the head where the parts were put together, and a piece is also put over each shoulder and extending over the breast outside. Then they are painted with oil-paint, so that children may not suck off the paint.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Strengthening the seams and projecting or exposed parts of doll-heads by cementing or pasting on those parts muslin, linen, silk, or other equivalent material, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
LUDVVIG. GREINER.
