IM PROVE M ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 197,660, dated November 27, 1877; application filed February 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVY Gr. PERRY, of Hickory Flat, State of Mississippi, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in plows; its object being to provide a simple and eifective means for securing the plowshare to its standard, to adapt the plow for turning either right or left furrows, and to provide for conveniently adjusting the plow with respect to the surface being plowed, in order to regulate the depth of the furrow at will and it consists in the combination,.with the plowshare and the supporting-standard, of a detachable and interchangeable moldboard, which may be adjusted to turn the fur row either to the right or left, as may be desired. D represents the plowshares, each of which is constructed of a shovel-shaped point provided with an aperture, d, to fit over the lugs 0, formed on the lower ends of the standards 0 G for the purpose of supporting the plowshares, said shares being each held in place upon said lugs by means of a single bolt, E, passing through the standards.
To each standard, above the shovel-shape point, and resting against its upper edge, is secured a curved mold-board or wing, so constructed that it can be detached and another substituted for it, to turn the furrows to the right or left, as may be desired. Said moldboard is secured to the standard by means of a single bolt, G, and is prevented from shifting thereon by the upper edge of the shovel-shaped point, against which it rests.
The letter H represents a bent frame, carrying at its lower end a supporting-wheel, I. Said frame is enlarged at its upper end, and
pivoted to the rear of the plow-beam, the enlarged portions being provide dwith curvilinear slots i, through which the bolts K are secured in the plow-beam, said bolts being provided with screw-nuts, by means of which the I frame may be clamped in any desired position in order to adjust the height of the plow with respect to the ground to be plowed, and thus regulate the depth of the furrow.
The operation of my improved plow will be apparent from the above without further description.
The manner of using the improved plow is as follows: When it is desired to convert the plow into a double-shovel plow, all thatis necessary is to remove the right-hand turningwings or mold-boards, and substitute in their place a shovel-shaped top mold-board, which is raised in its center and set back on both sides alike. They fit the same plow shares or points, which remain a fixture on the plowstandard. The letter A represents the plow-beam, to I the under side of which is secured a horizon- When it is necessary to turn a furrow to the left, I substitute for the right-hand turningwings similar, but left-hand, turning moldboards or wings.
By the manner of attaching the plow share or point D, by means of a single bolt and the lug c, the said point or share is independent of the mold-boards or wings, and can be used without the use of the latter, which is often desirable in the cultivation of small corn.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the plowshares and the standards, the detachable and interchangeable mold-boards, whereby the plow is adapted to turn right or left furrows, substantially as described.
