1 Application t p f V sioaim" .This invention relates to improvements in gar-v ment renovating apparatus, andzthe object there-' of is to provide an appliancejfor spreadingout and supporting a garment While applying thereto a jet of steam in' such manner as to cause it to be distended and revolved upon its'support by forcehof the appliedsteam. p, Another jjob'ject is to provide apparatus for ste'aning garments made of pile'fabric in suchi'manner that the steam is distributed'with inore or less force over'the entirel inner surface of the garmentso as'toc1eansethe entire 'fabric' body. and raise-'the pile on' the exterior thereof. Other objects and advantages' of the invention will appearhereinafter. I
In the usual practice of' steamingl velvet dresses,l the garment is'housed'in a cabinet filled with steam, or, the Vdress is placed ,onj'af form or suspended while steam is applied' at'randoin'from a nozfzle that is manipulated'by thev operator; In the present instance, the garmentis supported and steam applied in such manner 'thatV the garment is continuously rotated While distended by 'the force of steam'introduced through a nozzle against the inner Wall of the garment so that the pressure of the steam is distributed automatically more or less uniformly over the entire inner surface of the garment without need of manipulation by the operator.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the invention shown as applied to a garment;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the invention applied to a garment the skirt of which is longer in the back than in the front;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a skirt spreader and its guide, a steam nozzle being also included in the View; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of a preferred form of steam nozzle and its supporting foot.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention consists of a suspended dress hanger, a revolvable skirt spreader, a guide for the spreader, and a nozzle for applying steam to a garment that is suspended from the hanger and attached to the spreader.
The hanger The hanger 1 is of the usual structure for suspending a dress from the shoulders and is attached to an overhead stationary support 2 by a cord connection 3 preferably provided with a swivel 4 so that when a garment 5 is suspended on the hanger and rotated upon its longitudinal concentric therewith which is connectedl with the hoop byv spokes 8... garment sothat when applied toi'a garment suspezdedv on-the hange'rxthe spreader,,is' pendently supported substantially inif-horizontal. position .beneath the garment whereby the skirt thereof. is held spread outwardlyandstretched.e 1;'1 f., Th'gfli'i 'I f `The guide. consists of a .floor` .base 1 1 provided .with an'upwardly extending post .12 Which .When :the guide Vis in: operating position projects loosely through the .bore..13fof the hub. 7... Preferably,
theflbore:ofthe.hub'isjsufficiently large as to permit .freedom of .axial .turning 'and-tilting' :movement of the spreader with respect to the guide post while attached to a garment suspended on the hanger.
The nozzle The nozzle through which steam is applied to the garment preferably consists of a pipe 14 pro- Vided with an insulating handle 15 and has also j attached thereto a cross-piece 16 c-onstituting a foot that prevents the pipe from turning axially when the foot is positioned on the floor. The discharge end of the pipe has an upturned porend of the pipe is connected to a source of steam supply under pressure by a flexible hose (not shown).
' Operation In using the apparatus, the hanger while attached to the stationary support by its connection is inserted through the neck of the garment so as to extend beneath the shoulders, thus suspending the garment. The spreader is positioned upon the guide which is alined upon the floor' ilo 90 tion constituting a nozzle 17, and the opposite i being longer than the front, the spreader is, sus-' pended accommodatingly uponmorebrv less of an angle which is permitted because ,the bore of its hub is greater than the guide-post. In this i instance when the steam is applied the spreader rotates upon the axis of the guide-post while the garment is heldV in longitudinal tension byv the weight of the spreader as in the former instance. In the vpreferred form of nozzle and support shown in Fig. 4, the steam pipe'M' and a stud 18 are secured in the'opposite ends of a T conx nection 19 and the stud is adjustably securedin the foot 16' by aclamp screw 20. The nozzle l1'7' is secured in the side branch of the connection and its tip isfiattened to form anelongated nar-` I row discharge opening 21. The pipe 14' may i be adjustably turned upon'its axis relative -to the foot by manipulating vthe screw so that the nozzle will be posed at the desired angle when the foot 'and the pipe rests upon the floor. v v
1. In a garment renovating apparatus, `a sta-v tionary support, a hanger suspended .from said support by a connection provided with a swivel, a spreader having-a'hoop and a concentriczhub connected therewith by spokes and provided with an annular series of fasteners connected with the hoop at intervals by flexible connectors, a guide having a fioor base provided with an'upwardly extending post alined with said'stationary supcueA The steam from the interior of the garport, .said post extending loosely through the hub of the spreader, and a steam-ejecting nozzle disposed beneath the spreader and'directed at an yacute angle toward the inner surface of a garment when said garment is suspended from said hanger and connected at its bottom to said spreader by said fasteners so that when steam is ejected from the nozzle the garment is extended and rotated by theiejected steam.
2. In a garment renovating apparatus, a rotatably mounted hanger, a spreader having an outer ,annular series of fasteners connected therewith at spaced intervals and provided with a central hub,fa guide-'post disposed vertioally in alinement with the axis of said hanger and extending loosely through the bore of said hub and upon which postsaid spreader has axial, tilting and turning movement, andl a steam-ejecting nozzle positioned beneath the spreader and directed at an acute angle ytoward the inner surface of a garment when said garment is suspended from the hanger and said spreader isgin positionon the postfand attache'dv tosaid. garment so that when steam is ejected from the Vnozzle the garment 'isfthereby extended and rotated. i
3. 'In a garment renovating apparatus,,a gar; ment hanger supported to have free turning movement upon a vertical Vaxis, a garment spreader having 'a series of fasteners forjattach-l ing thespreader to the lower' end of a garment suspended from saidchanger, said spreader havinga hub, a post disposed vertically incalinement with the axis 'of saidV hanger andl extending through the bore of' said hub, and a s team-ejecti ing nozzle disposed beneath the spreader arranged 'for' applying a jet :of steam at an acute angle againstthe inner surface. of a garment when said garment is suspended between the hanger Vand spreader soV that said garment is thereby e'x-l tended and rotated while clea'rsed by thesteam'.
