IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-WR-APPE RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,592, dated November 27, 1877 application filed March 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BLELOCH, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine- Needle Wrappers, which improvement is clearly set forth in the accompanying specification and drawing.
Heretofore sewing-machine needles have been put up in packages of one hundred of a size or number in one wrapper; also, packages of them have been made up containing twenty-five, or ten, or.different quantities of assorted sizes or dozens but generally in the wrappers or package in bulk, not stuck into the wrapper.
' Sewing-machineneedles put up as above stated are necessarilysubiected, when in the hands of the retailer, to much handling for the purpose of selectingthe sizes re'quiredbythe purchaser, and being loose in an ordinaryneedle-case, they must be taken in the hands for the above purpose. Frequent handling of highly-polished .needles causes them to become badly rusted by coming in contact with the moisture of the hands, and, as a consequence, the needles bec0me,'in a measure, rendered unsuited for sewmg.
Also, the practice of putting up considerable numbers of one or different sizes in a package, or of keeping them for sale in bulk in a compartment needle-case, occasions much inconvenient mixing of sizes, so much so as to make a person who may be selecting a needle from such package or case feel obliged to examine the marked size of. the needle, as stamped upon it, before putting it in the machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a more convenient and economical needle-wrapper for sewing-machine needles, which shall obviate the before-mentioned objections, and furnish for retailing purposes a wrapper in which said needles are stuck and folded in such a manner that the sizes are kept separate, and that the needles can be handled and examined by the purchaser conveniently, Without having to touch the needles themselves; and, furthermore, such a wrapper as permits of so folding it around the needles after they are stuck therein that a portion of the length of the needles is in sight on both sides of the wrapper, and the balance of the length of the needles is covered by having a part of the wrapper folded over it.
The said wrappers are chemically prepared, so as to act as a preventive to rust on the needles.
In the drawing, Ais the wrapper; B, the several groups of needles upon it; D D D D, the figure and letter spaces on the gradingplan at the end of the needles, over which are shown letters and figures giving the tradesizes of the needles stuck under the plan.
My wrappers are made to be folded up, nearly covering the groups of the needles on the front, leaving exposed their points as they lie against the stamped or printed grade-spaces on the wrapper, and the sides are afterward folded backw ardly together, in such a way that the two outer sides of the wrapper exposed to view show the points of the needles therein, their grades for silk and thread, and their trade numbers or letters.
What I claim as my invention is-- s A needle -wrapper consisting of the sections B B, in which the needles are stuck, and the sections A A A, constructed and combined substantially as described, whereby, when said sections A A A are folded, a portion of the length of the needles is left in sight on both sides of the wrapper, as set forth.
