Youngstown, Ohio W. Straubel,
Application August 3, 1931, Serial No. 554,605
6 Claims.v (Cl. 12S-26)- This invention relates to vertical filing drawers, more particularly to those having a'tiltable front with reciprocating tilting follower.
rIhe invention contemplates improvements and changes in the construction shown in my 'Patent No. 1,892,020, dated December 27,1932.
The object of this invention` is the provision of improved meansconnectingthe `front of the drawer with a follower positioned in the drawer whereby the tilting of' the front end forwardly from its vertical position, causes a backward tilting of the follower and the returning of the front end alsolreturning .the follower to ajvertical position.
As in my patent above referredto, the follower is locked in its upright position and is,v actuated only to an inclined position by the tilting of the front end. In operation the tilted follower also moves back at its base `to allow for the loosening vof the contents a't the'bottom of the file.
The improvement mainly vconsists 'of Va rearrangement of operating devices wherebysbetter lifting facilities are provided to-the follower in bringing it to an upright vposition with all or part of the 'contentsi'lled `bearing against it when in an inclined or tilted position.
With this object in view the invention consists in construction substantially as herein described and claimed and as set out in the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the improved device with the parts arranged to hold the filed contents in a closed or vertical position,
Figure 2 is a cross section rear View of the file drawer at line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to figure 1 but showing the parts in open pos'tion to facilitate the filing of or reference to the drawer contents.
In the drawings Figures 1 and 3, the inner left hand sides of the drawer are shown with the mechanical devices attached. In Figure 2 a sectional view of the main body is shown comprising the two sides and bottom of the file with provision for the sliding or movable follower at the two lower corners. The means provided for the expanding operation, that is the tilting drawer front and the reciprocating tilting follower, are designated by the numerals hereinafter described, and while the means described is shown as located at one side of the drawernevertheless it will be understood that the said means consists of complete sets of levers and links at opposite sides of the drawer. The drawer front 1 is hinged at its lower part at 2 to the drawer bottom. The wing 3 provides a suitable ycombination of g'ives the 'front is vdrawn or tilted-outward as 'in Figure 3,
'which is attached to the drawer side, has the lever 5V pivotally attached to it at 8 and the link 6 is im) pivotally connected to the side member 9, the
levers and links thus formed actuate the side `member 9 as the drawer 'front is tilted outward and brought back to an upright position. The side members 9 have longitudinal 65 dove tail formed grooves 10 to engage the flanged rollers l1 attached to brackets 12 extending rearwardly from the follower plate 13. The iside member 9 with the oscillating links 14, 15 and 16 pivotally attached thereto at their upper ends and the same'links pivotally attached at their lower ends tothe stationary side member lll,
side member 9 a `parallel rocking motion, backward and downward, -as' the-drawer U5 instead ofbackward and upward-asv described in my Patent No. 1,892,020.
As a means toY hold the side member 9 Vin its upward positionthe coil spring 118 'is attached 1'7 :and yat its 'upper 80 end to the side member 9. In a closed or upright position the front 1 and the follower 13 are firmly held as provided by the tension of the spring 18 with the links 14, 15 and 16 vertically as in Figure l. The rearwardly extend- 85 ing brackets 12, when the follower 13 is tilted backward as in Figure 3, provide improved lifting power to the follower in bringing it to an upright position by the operation of the drawer front.
Instead of the usual follower slide in the center channel 181/2 to have it free of obstructions, side follower slides 19 suitably recessed within the lower parts of the drawer sides, are provided as shown in Figure 2. These slides are attached 195 to the follower base 20 to which is hinged at 21 the follower blade 13.
Longitudinally along the bottom of the center channel 18% are perforations suitably spaced to receive the projecting lug 22 of the sliding spring- 1100 actuated member 23.
The lifting of the member 23 at its upper end will permit of moving the follower back and forth for adjustment in accordance with the contents filed and to be set in a perforation at a more 105 suitable point.
As the pivotal point of the tilting follower is at the lower end of the member 23 where the lug 22 enters a perforation within the drawer channel 181/2, the follower base 20 will move back- 110 lower, brackets carried by the rear of the follower and having means for slidably engaging within said channel members, pivoted-links for connecting said channel members with the lower portion of the drawer, springs for tensioning saidlchannel members toward the drawer front, a pair of link members respectively connected with the drawer front and with each channel member, said link members being connected by intermediate levers pivotally supported at intermediate points on fixed parts of the drawer` whereby outward movement of the drawer front will cause the channel members to move downwardly, and vice versa. ,f l
2. A drawer having an outwardly tiltable front and a rearwardly tiltable follower ,arranged in spaced-apart relation, follower-actuating members arranged at the sides of the drawer and having channel portions, brackets carried by the rearrof the follower and having meansfor engaging in the channel portions of said follower- .actuating members, links pivotally mounted at the lowerrportions of the sides of vthedrawer and having their upper ends pivotally connected with and supporting said members, fixed plates Vcarried by the sides of the drawer, a link connected with the front end of each follower-actuating member., levers pivotally connected to said fixed plates and also pivotally connected tc `said second mentioned links, Iand other link members pivotally connecting the upper ends of said levers and the drawer front. v
., 3. A drawer having atiltable drawer front, a
tiltable follower, grooved .members on each-side of the drawer between the front and the follower, means on the back of the follower operatively engaging the grooves in said members, means for rockably mounting said members at the sides of the drawer, connections between said membersand the drawer front, and springs each having one end anchored to a xed drawer part and each having its other end connected to said vgrooved members. I 4. In a ling drawer having a tiltable front and a tiltable follower provided with axes of rotation beneath the bottom of the drawer, means for actuating said front and follower comprising a pair of members, means for connecting said members with the rear side of the follower, pivoted means for supporting said members with respect'to the drawer, pivoted levers connected with xed drawer parts-and a plurality of links for respectively connecting said members with the levers" and connecting the latter with the drawer front.
5. 'Adrawer having a tiltable front and a tiltable follower, actuating memberstherefor, pivoted means supported from the drawer sides and connected with saidvmembers, links respectively connected with the drawer front and said actuating members, levers having fixed axes and havin g their ends connected with saidrlinks, and springs each having one end anchored toa iixed drawer part and each having itsV other end connected to one of said actuating members.`
6. In a ling drawer the combination of a tiltable front pivoted in a fixed position beneath the bottom of the'drawer and a tiltable follower, means for slidably and pivotally mounting the follower beneath the bottom of the drawer, follower actuating members slidably connected with the rear side of the follower, a plurality of links respectively pivotedl to` the lower side of the follower actuating Vmembers and to the lower part of the sides of the drawer, and lever and link means operatively connecting said members with the tilting front.
