This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pen holder for ink-stands.

The invention has for an object the construction of a pen holder for ink-stands which is characterized by the combination with an ink-. stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending around the front side and having straight rearward sides of a cylindrical body for extending into the opening and provided with a novel arrangement to prevent its rotation, operating in conjunction with the straight rearward sides, and adapted for supporting a pen holder. 7

More particularly the invention contemplates the arrangement of a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening extending through to the bottomof the balljoint for the insertion of a pen to hold the pen engaged into the ink holding opening.

Still further the invention proposes the construction of a pen holder which is adapted to be engaged on ink-stands atthe present time widely distributed among the public. These ink-stands are generally constructed of glass and are provided with caps slidably arranged upon the flange with the straight sides surrounding the ink holding openings so that the openings may be opened and closed. It is proposed to so arrange the ink holders according to this invention that the sliding caps of the ink'wells may be removed and the new pen holders substituted. I

Still further the invention also proposes an arrangement whereby the body portion of the pen holder is provided with a flange for resting upon-the flange of the ink stand and having a flange extension on the under side for extending between the straight rearward sides of the flange of the ink stand for holding the body against rotating.

Still further the invention also proposes an arrangement whereby the flange extension may be removed to adapt the pen holder for engaging into the top of an ink opening not provided with a flange arrangement, as for example, the open top of an ink bottle.

Still further the invention proposes the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and'which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

Fig. '7 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 7,'7 of Fig. 6. The penholders according to this invention are intended to be used in combination with an ink stand comprising a glass base 10 having a flat top 11 with top openings 12 for holding ink. Ink stands of this type are widely distributed among the public. These ink stands are also provided at the front with several grooves 13 for holding pencils and pens. A recessed portion 14 extends across the grooves 13 to facilitate the removing of .the pencils and pens disposed in the grooves. These ink wells are generally of hollow construction as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. A cen+ tral opening 15 is extended inwards from the top and is for the purpose of holding small articles such as paper clips, pen nibs, and the like. Each of the ink holding openings 12 is surrounded with a flange having a portion 16 extended across the front and portions 1'7 at the sides extending straight rearwards. In the old constructions, slidable caps, not illustrated .on the drawing, were guided by the rearward extended portions 1'7 of the flanges so that the ink holding openings could be opened and closed. I

The pen holders according to this invention are arranged to be substituted for the old caps covering the ink holding openings, and are adapted to coact in combination with the-straight sides of the flanges in a novel manner to prevent the penholders from shifting from positions. More particularly each penholder comprises a body 18 of substantially cylindrical shape for extending into the opening 12 and havinga flange 19 for resting upon the flange 16 and furthermore having'a flange extension 20 on the other side of the flange 19 for extending in between the straight rearward side portions 1'7 for holding through to the bottom for receiving a pen such as indicated by the dot and dash lines 25.

The opening 24, intermediate of its ends is formed with a small shoulder portion 26 forming a seat for the: nib holding portion of the pen 25 to prevent the pen from being inserted too far into the ink holding opening. More than this the seat 26 serves to freely prevent the air from the outside reaching the ink, which would have a tendency to rapidly dry the ink.

The top of the opening in the body 18 which holds the ball. joint 22 is provided with an inward extended flange 2'7 acting in conjunction with an open ring shaped wire 28 mounted iii a peripheral groove upon the inner side of the opening in the body for the purpose of holding the ball portion of the ball joint 22 in a universal fashion. The open wire ring 28 is of a design having a tendency to expand and so naturally maintains its position within the groove formed in the body 18. This groove is of semi-circular cross shape so that half of the diameter of the wire forming the ring 28 extends into the groove and the other half projects. The arrangement allows simple and easy assembly of the ball joint in that it maybe extended into the body from the bottom side and then held in position merely by snapping the open ring 28 into position in the groove. I

In Figs. 6 and '7, a modification of the invention hasbeen disclosed in which provision is made for adapting the pen holder to engage with ink holding opening or the open end of a bottle or similar opening which are uniform construe-* tion without partially surrounded flanges as described relative tothe ink stand. More particularly this penholder is provided with a flange extension 20' separate from the flangeand normally latches in operative position.

This flange extension 20' has several pegs 30 upon its inner face engaging into the receiving openings in the side of the body 18. A central peg 30 from the flange extension 20 also engages into the body. 18 and is adapted to engage with a latch rod 31 longitudinally slidable in the body. This latch rod works in an opening extended through the body and closed with a plug 32. An expansion spring 33 works between the plug 32 and the inner end of the latch rod 31. The latch rod 31 is formed with an opening 34 aligned with an opening 35 connecting with the groove which receives the open wire ring 28. The removable flange extension 20 may be removed by first removing the open ring 28 then inserting a pin or small nail through the opening 35 into the opening 34 and manually moving the latch rod 31 downwards to disengage from the peg 30. The ofiter side 18' of the cylindrical body 18, in Figs. 6 and 7 is shown slightly tapered so that the pen holder may be forced into an ink holding opening and maintain its position frictionally.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I 7 claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-

1. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides; a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint.

2. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, the sides of said cylindrical body being slightly tapered so that the body may be forced into said 105 ink holding opening and frictionally maintain its position. a

3. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extendingbetween the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said ball joint comprising a spherical portion extended into said central opening and an open wire ring engaged in a groove in the central opening and maintaining the position of said spherical portion.

4. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink'holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said ball joint comprising a spherical portion extended into said central opening and an open Wire ring engaged in a groove in the central opening and maintaining the position of said spherical portion, the upper end of said central opening being formed with an inward extending lip preventing the spherical portion from moving upwards, and said wire ring being located to the bottom of the spherical portion.

5. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said flange extension being removable.

In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said flange extension being of separate material from said flange and removably mounted.

In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said flange extension being of separate material from said flange and removably mounted, and having pegs extended into the sides of said body, and a latch rod cooperating with one of said pegs for holding said flange extension in position.

8. In combination with an ink stand having a flat top with an ink holding opening surrounded with a flange extending across the front of the opening and straight rearward at both sides, a body of substantially cylindrical form extending into said opening and having a flange resting on said flange and a flange extension on the under side of said flange extending between the said straight rearward sides for holding said body against rotating, and a ball joint mounted in a central opening in said body and having a cup portion at the top with an opening for a pen extending through to the bottom of said ball joint, said flange extension being of separate materials from said flange and removably mounted, and having pegs extended into the sides of said body, and a latch rod co-operating with one of said pegs for holding said flange extension in position, said latch rod being urged into its operative position with a resilient member, and being formed with an opening aligning with an opening in said body through which a tool may be engaged by which it may be moved to an inoperative position.
