The pouring spout 2 of the funnel is so disposed relative to the semicylindrical body portion that the upper end thereof is substantially in line with the center of the semi-cylindrical wall forming the body portion, and the longitudinal axis of the spout intersects the axis of the semi-cylindrical body portion at an acute angle. The funnel is provided with a thickened portion 9 forming a ledge 10 which is substantially in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the semi-cylindrical body portion and containing the upper face of the bead 8.
Attached to the thickened portion 9 is a cutter 11. This cutter projects toward the upper end 4 of the funnel and is spaced from the wall of the semi-cylindrical body portion so that the cutter may sever the metal close to the double seam, and the double seam rest on this supporting ledge 10 at the same time that the bead 8 contacts with the double seam of the container. Said cutter has a piercing point 12 and cutting edges 13 and 14 receding therefrom. The dispensing funnel as described above is adapted for attachment to a container having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the semi-cylindrical body portion. A container of this dimension is illustrated at C in Figures 1, 4 and 5. The container is placed on a solid foundation and the funnel is slipped down over the container with the inner face of the semi-cylindrical body portion substantially in contact with the double seam. In other words, the center of the semi-cylindrical portion of the funnel is placed directly over the center of the container, and then the funnel is forced down on to the container. The piercing point 12 of the cutter will enter the container close to the double seam, and the end of the container will be out along a line which approaches the double seam, then recedes therefrom into a. line which extends toward the center of the container.
At the other side of the piercing point the end is out along a line substantially parallel to the line cut by the cutting edge 14 (see Fig. 5.) In this way, an opening is formed in the container end which extends close to the double seam and the severed metal isrolled as indicated at 0 so as to make a free opening through which the contents of the container may be dispensed. After the funnel is attached to the container, then the container and the funnel are inverted and placed in a receiving pipe 15 leading to a chamber in a casing 16. When in this position, it will be noted, the plane of the bottom of the container is inclined to the vertical with the low side thereof at the opening formed in the container. Inasmuch as the opening extends all the way to the double seam, the entire contents of the container will drain into the funnel through the spout into the pipe 15.
When it is desired to use the funnel in connection with a container of smaller diameter. then a plate 1'7 is attached to the body portion 1 of the funnel, which plate substantially closes the open side of the semi-cylindrical body portion. The plate is provided with hooked portions 18, 18
which engage the beads 5 and slide along the same. The plate is of substantially the same height as the cylindrical body portion of the funnel. This plate 1'7 is provided with a curved portion 1'7 centrally thereof which is shaped to conform to the curvature of the smaller size container. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, a container of smaller diameter is indicated at C. The center line of this container, intersects the point b which is the center of the curved portion '7' of the funnel. This portion '7 projects inwardly slightly from the plate 17 and provides a supporting ledge, indicated at 19 in Fig. l. The funnel with the plate attached is inverted and slipped down over the container C. The double seam, that is, the seam joining the end of the container to the body portion, will pass between the cutter and the wall of the semi-cylindrical body portion, and will finally rest on the ledge 10 and the ledge 19. The curved portion 17' is diametrically opposite the center of the supporting ledge carrying the cutter. The piercing point of the cutter will enter the end at a slight distance from the double seam, and the end will be cut on a line which approaches close to the double seam and also on lines substantially parallel and extending toward the center of the container. It will be apparent from the above that whether the container is of the largest capacity for the funnel as indicated at C, or of a smaller capacity as indicated at C, the opening in the container will always be made close to the double seam so that funnel is to be used. The essential feature consists in the positioning of the container relative to the cutter so that the end will be cut close to the double seam and the opening properly positioned relative to said double seam for the dispensing of the contents of the container.
It is obvious that changes in the details of construction and in the shaping of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patcut, is
1. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a body portion having means contacting with the end seam of containers of different diameters for supporting said containers during dispensing, a cutter housed within the body portion having a piercing point and cutting edges disposed relative to the supporting means so as to form a dispensing opening in containers of either size when the dispensing device is applied thereto, said body portion containing means whereby said containers of different diameters when operated upon by the dispensing device, will be positioned relative to the cutter so that said cutter will pierce the containers adjacent the double seam.
2. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a body portion having means contacting with the end seam of the container for supporting said container during dispensing, a cutter housed within the body portion having a piercing point and cutting edges disposed relative to the supporting means so as to form a dispensing opening in the container end when said funnel is attached to the container, said body portion being semi-cylindrical in form with the cutter located midway between the side edges thereof, and a plate adapted to be connected to said body portion for closing the open side thereof, said plate being curved at the central portion thereof about a center midway between said curved portion and the central portion of the semi-cylindrical body.
3. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a body portion having means contacting with the end seam of the container for supporting said container during dispensing, a cutter housed within the body portion having a piercing point and cutting edges disposed relative to the supporting means so as to form a dispensing opening in the container end when said funnel is attached to the container, said body portion being semi-cylindrical, said funnel directly beneath said semi-cylindrical body at the open side thereof having a wall extending from one side of said body to the other side thereof, and forming part of the means contacting with the end seam of the container.
4. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a body portion having means contacting with the end seam of the container for supporting said container during dispensing, a cutter housed within the body portion having a piercing point and cutting edges disposed relative to the supporting means so asto form a dispensing opening in the container end when said funnel is attached to the container, said body portion being semi-cylindrical, said funnel directly beneath said semi-cylindrical body at the open side thereof having a wall extending from one side of said body to the other side thereof and forming part of the means contacting with the end seam of the container, a plate adapted to be "attached to the semi-cylindrical portion of the funnel for closing the open side thereof, said plate having means for guiding a container of smaller diameter for positioning the same relative to the cutter so that the opening will be formed close to the double seam.
5. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a semi-cylindrical body portion, a dispensing spout integrally at-;
tached thereto, said funnel having a thickened portion forming a ledge, a cutter attached to said thickened portion having a piercing point and cutting edges extending therefrom whereby said cutter is spaced from the wall of the funnel so as to receive therebetween the end seam of the container attached to the funnel, said spout being directly beneath the cutterand having its axis -inclining outwardly away from the axis of the semi-cylindrical body portion of the funnel, said funnel beneath said semi-cylindrical body portion having a wall extending from one side edge of said body portion to the other side edge thereto receive therebetween the end seam of the 0011-.

8. An oil dispensing funnel for hermetically sealed containers comprising a body portion having means contacting with the end seam of the container for supporting said container during dispensing, a. cutter housed within the body portion having a piercing point and cutting edges disposed relative to the supporting means so as to form a dispensing opening in the container end when said funnel is attached to the container, said body portion'being semi-cylindrical in form with the cutter located midway between the side edges thereof, a plate for closing the open side of said body portion having means centrally thereof cooperating with said body portion for centering ,a container relative to the cutter of smaller diameter than said semi-cylindrical body portion, said body portion and said plate having interengaging portions whereby said plate may he slid endwise onto the body portion for connecting one to the other.
