This invention relates to window frame and sash constructions particularly applicable for vehicles as railway cars, busses and the like, and
has for its object very simple and economical means for adjusting the frame to variations in the widths of standard sashes, and to misalinements of the post, or the sash out of the vertical.
Another object is adjusting means, which are readily accessible without removing the sash.
Another object is an adjustable sash guide which includes a base flange overlying or opposed to theside of the post structure which faces the edge of the sash and an angular flange lapping the inner side of the post structure, that is, the side toward the interior of the car, and means coacting with or interposed between one of said flanges and the post structure for adjusting the guide member edgewise relatively to the sash.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

Sashes for railway cars and motor busses are furnished by a sash manufacturer to fit the standard windowopenings of railway cars and busses, and the sash manufacturer also furnishes sash guides to be applied to the post structure, or window frame. The window openings vary within small limits, and also the sashes may"vary within small limits. Likewise, the
' posts may be slightly out of vertical alinement, and the object of this invention is a structure whereby the sash manufacturer also supplies the guide member, and the guide member is so constructed that it can be adjusted forwidthwise variations and for slight misalinements out of the vertical in the post structure.
This window and sash construction comprises generally a structure having a window opening, a sash guide member carried by said structure at one side of the window opening, a sash movable along the guide member and means for adjusting the guide member edgewise relatively to the sash and for holding or fixing the guide member comparatively rigidly in its adjusted position. For brevitys sake, the portions of the frame confining the window opening are re ferred to herein as a post or post structure, although-it will be understood that in many instances, the frame member carrying the sash guide may not be strictly what is generally known as a post or post structure. The purpose of adjusting the guide member edgewise and fixing it in its adjusted position is' to make the guide member conform to widthwise variations in the sashes or in the posts or both or in this alinements out of the vertical of the posts or edges of the sashes.

The post structure here shown is an intermediate one between two window sashes with a sash oneach side thereof and the facing strip is double.
8 designates a sash guide member located in each channel and adjustable toward and from the bottom of the channel and edgewise relatively to the sash 9. The guide member here illustrated is formed of sheet metal to have a body 10 U-shaped in cross section with the sides of the U coacting with the sides of the channel 5, and with the intermediate or bottom part of the U formed with an outwardly extending flange 11 for entering a groove in the edge of the sash 9. The groove in the edge of the sash is provided with a U shaped weather strip, or lining 12 therein coaeting with the flange 11. The arrangement of the guide flange 11 in the groove of the sash per se forms no part of this invention which relates primarily to the widthwise adjustable feature of the'guide member 8. The guide member 8 is provided with reinforcing blocks 14 therein at intervals.
The means for adjusting the guide member 8 edgewise of the sash comprises adjusting screws 15 carried by the guide member and thrusting against the bottom of the channel 5 and extending in a direction edgewise of the sash. The screws have slotted heads 16 accessible from the face of the body 10 towardthe edge of'the sash. By turning the screws in the proper direction, the guide member will be pushed outwardly, and by turning them in the other direction, the guide member can be pushed inwardly toward the bottom of the channel until the inner ends of the screws bottom on the channel. The inner ends of the screws are provided with seats or disks 17 in order to have a large seating surface on the bottom of the channel. These adjusting screws are made accessible by raising the sash to make a lower adjusting screw accessible, an upper adjusting screw being accessible when the sash is lowered.
The guide member 8 is held from shifting movement after being set, by the clamping action of the facing strip '7. The clamping action of the strip 7 on the guide member 8 applies a binding action on the adjusting screws 15 tending to hold them from turning, or in their adjusted position. These facing strips are secured to the post body 2 by means of screws 18 extending through the facing strips into threaded blocks 19 secured in any suitable manner to the end of the T. formation of the body 2. These blocks 19 are here shown as provided with bifurcated bases as 21 extending astride the edge of the leg of the T formation and secured thereto as by rivets or screws 22.

In Figures 7, 8, and 9, another embodiment of the widthwise adjustable guide member is shown. designates a wood post. 31 is a sheet metal window frame part, angular in cross section, attached to the post as by screws 32 and corresponding to the strip 4, Figures 3 and 4.
33 is the facing strip corresponding to the strip 7, Figures 1, 2, 3, and i. 34 is the guide member in the channel formed by the strips 31, 33. In this embodiment of the invention, the guide member 34 is adjusted by means of a rotary cam 35 carried by the strip 31 on the bottom of the channel formed by this strip and the facing strip 33. The cam 35 is discoidal in general form with apolygonal periphery shaped to receive a wrench, and is formed with a cam surface 36 which is provided on one side of the disk and coacts with a follower 37 on the guide member. The. cam 35 is secured to the strip 31 or the-portion or flange forming the bottom of This feature the channel by suitable means as a rivet 33.
There are a plurality, usually two cams, located towardv the lower and upper ends of the 'guide member. The guide member is formed up of sheet metal and is practically the same as that shown in Figure 3, except that the folded portion 39 corresponding to the part 11, Figure 3, has its side portions spaced apart to receive a plate to on which the follower 37 is provided. One of the walls of the face portion of the guide member 31 is provided with an opening or openings ll through which the cams'can be adjusted by means of a wrench. f
The facing strip 33 is removable for the purpose of adjusting the earns 35 through the openings 41. The facing strip 33 is held in position by means of screws 42 extending through openings 43 in the facing strio and threading into nuts 44 located in recesses or boxes 45 provided on the bottom portion of the strip 31. These nuts are threaded at one end only and have a counterbore 46 opening through their other or inner ends. After the screws are initially locat-ed in the nut their inner ends are spread or split, as at 47, so that the screw cannot be entirely removed from the nuts and lost. The openings i3 are slots opening through the edge of the facing strip toward the post body. A lock Washer 48 is located between the outer end of the nut and one end wall of the box or recess 45. The nut is long enough to bottom on the other end wall of the box at 49 when the screw 42 is loosenedsufiiciently to permit the removal 1 of the strip 33. This feature holds the screw in alinement, or from assuming an inclined position when loosened, so that the strip 33 can be readily replaced. When the adjustment of the cams has been effected, the strip 33 is replaced by an edgewise-movement passing the slots 43 over the shanks of the screws 42 under the heads of the screws and the screws tightened thus clamping the face plate 33 against the guide vmember 31.

In operation, the manufacturer suppliesthe sash and'the sash guide and also may supply the sheetmetal parts 4 and? which are, applied to the post body. The car manufacturer secures the parts 4 tothe post body 2 and inserts the guide members Spadjusting them by means of thescrews lei-to the proper position in the channel 5.. The facing strip 7 is then appliedand tightened bymeans of the screws, 18 which clamp the facing. strip against the guide memberwith enough pressure to hold the guide member from sliding with the sashwhen the sashis, being raisedand lowered.
This construction is particularly economical in manufacture, readily applied to the post body, and by this construction the window frame, is readily: adjustable to variations that may exist in the widths of the sashes, or inthe spacing of the posts,..andto slight misalinements out of the vertical.
What'I'claim is:
1. In a window and sash construction, aframe including apoststructure, a sash guide member carried by the post structure, a sash movable along. the guide member, the guide member being adjustable relatively to the post structure and the sash in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means self+contained with the guide member for adjusting theguide member to conform to variations inthe widths of sashes andvertical misalinements of the post structure, said means including screws threading in the guide and, thrusting against the post structure and extending in a direction edgewise of the sash.
2. In a window and sash construction, a frame including apost structure formed with a lengthwisechannel, the post structure includinga body: and a-facing strip forming one side of the channel, asash guide member mounted in the channel, a sash movable along the guidemember and slidably interlocked therewith, the guide member being adjustable toward and from the bottomof the channel, means .for adjusting the guide member in the channel edgewise relatively tothe sash, and means securing the facing strip to the body and clamping the facing strip against-the guide.
3. In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post structure formed with a length-,- wise channel, a guide member having av base portion in thechannel and a flange extending outside of the channel, a sash coasting with the guide member, the flange extending edgewise-of the-sash, and the sash having a groove in its edge for receiving the flange, the guide member being adjustable-in the channel edgewise relatively to the sash, and means for adjusting the guide member edgewise relatively to the sash and holding it in its adjusted position, said means including screws carried by the guide member and thrusting against the bottom of the channel and threading into the guide member, the screws extending in a direction edgewise of the sash and having their heads accessible on the side of the guide member toward the edge of the sash and on one side of said flange.

In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post structure, ,a sash guide member carried by the post structure, asash movable along the guide member, the guide member beingadjustable relativelyto the post structure and the sash in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means for adjusting theguide member to conform to Variations in the widths of sashes and vertical misalinements of thepost structure, said means including screws threading through the guide member and thrusting against the post structure and extending in a direction edgewise of the sash, and having heads accessible from the side of the guidetowardv theedge of the sash, whereby the adjusting screws are self-containedv with the guidemember andthrust only against the post structure. v

In a window sash and guide construction, a frame, a post member, a guide member carried by the-post member, a sash movable along the guideI member, the guide. member being adjustablerelative to the post member and the sash in a directionedgewise of the sash, and means carried by and self contained with one of said members and vcoacting with the other of said members, and operable to adjust the guide member relative to the post member to conform to variations in the widths of sashes and vertical misalinements in the post member, said-means including screws threading, in one member and coacting with the other, whereby upon turning of. the screws, the
guide member is shifted edgewise relative to the post member, said screwsextending in adirection edgewise of the sash-and locking means operable to holdthe'guide member in its adjusted position.
7. In a window and sash construction, aframe. a post: member, a-guide member carried by the post member, asash movable along the guide member, the guide member being adjustablerelativeto the post memberand thesash in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means carried by and self contained withtheguide member and coacting'with the post member, and operable. to adjust the guidemember relative to..the post memberto. conform to variations in thewidths of sashes and, vertical misalinements, in the post member, said. means including screws. threading inone of said members and coacting with. the other, whereby. upon-turning, of the screws, the
guide member is shiftededgewise relative tov the post member, saidscrews extending in. a direction edgewise of thesash, and lockingmeansfor holding the guide member-in its adjusted position.

In a window and sash construction, a frame, a post member, a guide member carried by the post member, a sash movable along the guide member, the guide member being adjustable relative to the post member and the sash in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means carried by and self contained with one of said members and coacting with the other of said members, and operable to adjust the guide member relative to the post member to conform to variations in the widths of sashes and vertical misalinements in the post member, said means including screws threading in one of said members and coacting with the other, whereby upon turning of the screws, the guide member is shifted edgewise relative to the post member, said screws extending in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means acting on the guide member to create a binding action on the adjusting screws, and hold the guide member and the screws in their adjusted position, said locking means including screws extending through the guide member in a direction edgewise of the sash, and when tightened acting to create a binding action on the adjusting screws, and thereby holding the guide member and the adjusting screws in their adjusted position.
10. In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post member, a guide member carried by the post member, a sash movable along the guide member, the sash and the guide member having coacting means for holding the sash and guide member out of sliding metal to metal contact, the guide member being adjustable relative to the post member and the sash in a direction'edgewise of the sash, and means self contained with and carried as a unit with one of said members, and operable to adjust the guide member to conform to variations in widths of the sashes and vertical misalinements of the post structure, said means including screws threading in one of said members and coacting with the other, whereby upon turning of the screws the guide member is adjusted edgewise relative to the post member, said screws extending in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means for locking the guide member and the adjusting screws in their adjusted position.
11. In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post member, a guide member carried by the post member, a sash movable along the guide member, the sash and the guide member having coacting means for holding the sash and guide member out of sliding metal to metal contact, the guide member being adjustable relative to the post member and the sash in a direction edgewise of the sash, and means self contained with and carried as a unit with said guide member, and operable to adjust the guide member to conform to variations in width of the sashes and vertical misalinements of the post structure, said means including screws threading in one of said members and coacting with the other, whereby upon turning of the screws the guide member is adjusted edgewise relative to the post member, said screws extending in a direction edgewise of the sash, and locking screws extending in a direction edgewise of the sash, said screws extending into the guide member and creating, when'tightened, a binding action on the adjusting screws, and lock the guide member and the adjusting screws in their adjusted position.
12. In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post structure, the post structure including a body and a strip separable from the body, a guide member carried by the post member, the guide member being adjustable in a direction edgewise of the sash relative to the post structure, means for adjusting the guide member, said strip coacting with the guide member to hold it in its adjusted position, said strip, and the means for securing it to the body of the post structure, constituting means coacting with the guide member for holding it in its adjusted position.
13. In a window and sash construction, a frame including a post structure including a body, a demountable facing strip, and means for securing the facing strip to the body, a guide member coacting with the post structure, a sash movable along the guide member and slidably interlocked therewith, the guide member being adjustable in a direction edgewise of the sash relative to thepost structure, means for adjusting the guide member including screws threading in the guide member in a direction edgewise of the sash, and having heads accessible when said strip is removed, said strip coacting with the guide member, and the strip, and the means for securing it to the post structure, constituting means for holding the guide member in the position to which it has been adjusted by the screws.
