(01240-18) This invention relates to a fixture embodying an 4adjustable lamp socket, it being an object of the invention to provide anew and improved fixture of this character embodying a socket which can be adjusted without removing the reflector or globe holder associated therewith.

Another object is to provide a fixture of simple construction embodying a socket which may be readily adjusted without the use of tools.

Another object is to provide an adjustablelighting xture embodying new and improved means for locking a socket in various'positions of adjustment. Y Y

While -there is illustrated in the drawing and will hereinafter be described in detail a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that I do not intend to limit the invention to the specic construction and arrangement shown, it being contemplated that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art without de-' parting from the spirit and scope of the invention for connection with socket contacts 16, and is threaded externally to receive a collar 1'7 between which anda flange 18 on the bushing the upper end or base 19 of a reflector 20 is clamped. Since tachment to a conduit 14 'containing wires v15 the invention may be used to advantage in connection with a reflector having a somewhat slender tubular neck within which the socket is positioned, such a reflectory neck 21 is illustrated. Thus a lamp 22 carried by the socket 10 may be adjusted vertically so as to change the position of the'light source of the lamp with respect to the effectivev portion of the reflector.

It is an object of the invention to provide a construction whereinthe socket may be adjusted vertically in the neck of the reflector without removing the reflector and for this reason the supporting members 11 are preferably resilient in character and are secured to the inverted U- shaped member 12 so that as viewed in Fig. 1 they tend to spread outwardly as indicated by the arrows 25; The socket which may be of porcelain or other suitable material and provided with the usualscrew terminal (not shown) for the lamp, is herein disclosed as embodying a pair of laterally extending ears or lugs 26 and a metal ring or plate 27 which is secured to the 'lugs by means of screw devices 28. The metal ring portion of the socket'i's provided with a pair of slots 30 through which the members 11 extend when contracted as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the socket in this way being slidably mounted upon the supporting members so that it may be moved vertically with respect to the reflector.

In order'to hold the socket effectively in its adjusted position and to'lock it against accidental displacement or movement due to the weight of the parts or vibration, the metal ring 27 is preferably" provided with recesses 31 adjacent to and communicating with the slots 30. These recesses are arranged to receive reduced portions of the members 11 formed by providing pairs of notches 32in said members spacedlongitudinally thereof, as illustrated most clearly in Figs. 1, 4 and 5. The recesses 31 are herein provided with beveled or cam shaped ends 33 (Fig. 6) which are arranged to cooperate with beveled or cam shaped surfaces 34 forming the side walls of the notches 32 onthe members 11 to provide a wedging action of said members into the recesses due to the spreading' action of the members.' By properly proportioning the recesses and slots the supporting members do not engage the side walls 35 of the recesses, as. illustrated in Fig. 3, but cam against the inclined end .walls 33, and correspondingly the ring 27.l cams against the beveled portions 34 of the notches32 on the members 11 as illustrated in Fig; 4; A tightly gripping yet readily disengageable lockingmeans is thus provided which merely requires the manual drawing together of the lower ends of the members 11 for the purpose of adjusting the socket vertically thereon.

In order to facilitate the adjustment of the socket, means is preferably provided for guiding the socket with respect to the supporting members so that when said members are contracted into the slots '30, as shown inligsf Eand, there-is' no tendency for the ring to catch in the notches 32. As illustrated herein, and most clearly in Figs. 5 and 6, this means comprises guide portionsl or members 37 which project downwardly from the ring 27 adjacent the ends of theslots30` and are of sufficient length to straddle the notches 32. As is readily evident by referring to'Fig. 5, these guide members are effective to keep the members 11in alinement with the slots 30 When the ring 27 passes a pair of notches 32 and@therebyiprovides for a smooth sliding movement of the socket on the supporting members when said members are contracted into the slots 30.

A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a support, a pair ofv resilient metallic strap-like members extendingv from said support in laterally` spaced relation 4and having a plurality of setsof opposed notches in the opposite edges thereof, a lamp socket, a ringsecured to said socket havingslots Yther-einfarranged toreceivethe wide portions of said members, and recesses adjacent to and communicating with'said slots arranged to receive only thenarrower portions of said members formed by saidnotches, said recesses and notchesxhaving beveled walls interengageable with afwedging action to lockvthe socket in its adjusted position, and means projecting from said ring'adjacenttheends ofsaid slots and engageable with the edgesof'said members to guide thefring relatively to said members when the members are contracted into saidslots and facilitate movement of the socket longitudinally ofthe members.

An adjustable lighting fixture comprising, in combination, a support, a pair of members secured to said support and extending therefrom in laterally spaced substantially parallel relation and having notches in the edges thereof, a lamp socket having a portion formed with slots arranged to admit said members when the members are ldrawn slightly together from al normally expanded position, recesses in said socket adjacent said slots arranged to receive the narrower portions of the members formed by said notches, said recesses and notches having cam surfaces interengageable *to lock thelsocket in its adjusted position.

5. A device of the character described compris- I' ing, in combination, a support, a pair of memberssecured to said support and extending therefrom in laterally spaced relation and having pairs .fofrnotches vin `the opposite edges thereof, a lamp -socket having a portion formed with slots arranged to admit said members when contracted from a normally expanded position, and recesses in saidsocket adjacent said slots arranged to receive the narrower portions of said members formed by said notches to lock the socket in various positions of adjustment longitudinally of the members. y

An adjustable lighting fixture comprising, in combination, Va lamp socket, a pair of laterally spaced parallel supporting members for said socket one of which has a series of notches in the edges thereof, means secured to the. socket having slots vtherein through which said members slide and provided with a recess into which the reduced portionsY of one member formed by said notches interengage, and means on the socket spanning said notches Ywhen the parts are disengaged to facilitate adjustment of the socket longitudinally of said members. y

A device of the character described comprising,in combination, a support constituting a rst part, a lamp socket constituting a second part, a pair of resilient flat vmetallic members extending fromonefof saidparts in laterally spaced parallel relation, one of said members having a plurality of pairs of opposed recesses in the edges thereof, the other part being adjustable along said members and having a portion formed with slots arranged to admitsaid members when the members are displaced 'slightly from their normal positions and having a recess adjacent one of said slots arrangedto receive the narrower portions of the memberA formed by said pairs of recesses, certainof said recesses having bevelled edges engageablewith -a wedging action to lock one part in its adjusted position relatively to the other.
