The lock 'which forms the subject matter of the invention is adapted for use as a padlockV and comprises a main lock-member 6, a plug 7 and a complemental lock-member 8.
The main lock-member is elongated. It is formed of any suitable hardened metal and embodies a longitudinally extending bore 9 and a lateral extension 10 at one side of the bore. The bore extends from one end of the main lockmember to the other and serves as a bearing ink which the plug 7 is mounted rotatably. The extension 10 is formed integrally with the main lock-member 6 and is cut away or shaped at the rear end thereof so as to form a rearwardly extending, Stud-'like jaw 11. The outer end of this jaw is substantiallyv iiush with the rear end oi' the main lock-member 6, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawing.
The plug 'Thas a longitudinal slot l2 for a key 13 and-is provided at its front end with an enlarged head 14 whereby it is held against rearward displacement relatively to the main locklock-member `t by means of a split ring 16. The l latter is disposed in an annular groove 17 in the head 14 of the plug and projects into a contiguous annular groove 18 around the recess 15. When the plug is inserted into the bore in the main lock-member, the split ring 16 is compressed so that it is confined Wholly within the annular groove 17. When the plug is positioned so that the ring is opposite to the groove 18, the ring springs outwardly so that it is partly within the groove 18 and partly within the groove 17 and operates to effect a permanent connection whereby the plug is held against removal relatively to the main lock-member. is locked against rotation in the main lock-member by means of a plurality orl a set of keyoperable plate tumblers 19. The 'latter are mounted in a U-shaped frame 20 and are slidable transversely with respect to the plug. The
frame 20 lits snugly in a transverse socket 21 in the central portion of the plug 7 and is similar in design and construction to that exhibited in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,644,092. A spring 22 is associated with the frame and operates in conjunction with laterally projecting lugs 23 on the tumblers to force the tumblers, some in one direction and some in the opposite direction, and so that the ends project into longitudinal grooves 24 along the borey 9. The grooves 24 are preferably four in number and are arranged in diametrically opposite pairs. The tumblers are adapted to receive the bit of the key 13 and are constructed so that when the key is in its operative position in the key slot l2, the ends of the-tumblers are flush with the periphery of the plug. When the key is in its operative position and the ends of the tumblers are flush with the periphery of the plug, the plug is free so that it may be rotated in the bore 9 by the key 13. When the tumbler ends are positioned in alignment with a pairof the grooves 24, the key 13 may be withdrawn from the key slot 12. Upon withdrawal of the key, the spring shifts the tumblers so that the ends thereof project into the two grooves and lock the plug against rotation relatively to the main lockmember. Y
The complemental lock-member 8 is elongated and, like the main lock-member 6, is formed of any suitable hardened metal. It is located behind gand is longitudinally aligned with the main lockmember and embodies a longitudinally extending, internally threaded or tapped bore 25 and a lateral extension 26. The extension is formed integrally with the complemental lock-member 4-andis cut away and shaped at the front end .j This screw is formed integrally with and projects rearwardly from the rear end of the plug '7 and fits within the internally threaded or tapped boreA 25 in the complemental lock-member 8. When the plug is rotated in one direction, the screw 128 operates to shift the complemental locklock-member is shifted away from the main lock- The plug 7 member into an unlocked or inoperative position. In order to prevent rotation of the complemental lock-member relatively to the main lock-member 6 and to guide the complemental lock-member rectilinearly to and from the main lock-member, a pin 29 is provided. This pin is secured by a drive t within, and projects rearwardly from, a hole 30 in the rear end of the main lockmember 6, and lits slidably within an open-ended socket 31 in the complemental lock-member 8. A longitudinal hole 32 is bored in the central portion of the screw 29 so as to facilitate milling or machining of the plug and screw and to accommodate the pointed end of the key 13 as .shown in Figure 5.
The operation of the lock is as follows:
When it is desired to lock an apertured element (not shown in the drawing), the key 13 is inserted through the key slot 12 into its operative position 'with respect to the tumblers 19 and is turned so as to rotate the screw 28 in a direction wherein it serves to shift the complemental lock-member 8 intogitsunlocked position. When the complemental lock-member is in its unlocked position, one of the jaws 11 and 27 is `inserted into the aperture in the element and then the key 13 is turned so as to rotate the screw 28 in the direction wherein it serves to shift the complemental lock-member into its locking position. In this position, the jaw 27 abuts against the jawll, as previously pointed out, and produces a locking eifect as far as the element is concerned. Upon shift of the complemental lockmember into its locking position, the key 13 is Withdrawn from the key slot 12 with the result that the tumblers are shifted as hereinbefore described so that the ends thereof project into twovof the grooves 24 and lock the plug, as well as the screw, against rotation relatively to the main lock-member 6. When it is desired to release the element, the key 13 is inserted into the key slot 12 and manipulated so as to shift the complemental lock-member into its unlocked position.
The herein described lock consists of but a small number of parts and may be manufactured at a low and reasonable cost. It is extremely efficient in operation and is difficult to break or pick because of yits construction and size.
The invention is not to be understood asrestricted to the details set forth,-l since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
-Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a lock of the character described, the combination of a pair of elongated, complementary members arranged in end to end relation and embodyingA coacting lock-means and shiftable towards one another into a locking position wherein said means are rendered operative and away from one another into an unlocked position,
one of said members having a boreextending longitudinally therethrough, a plug mounted rotatably, and conned against axial displacement, in the bore and provided with key-operable tumblers for locking it against rotation relatively to said one member, and also provided with a slot for the key in the end farthest from the other member, and a screw connected rigidly to and projecting from the other end of the plug and applied to said other member so that it operates in response torotationof the plugin one direc- 2. combination of a pair of elongated, complemen-` tary members arranged in end to end relation and embodying coacting lock-means and shiftable towards one another into a locking position wherein said means are rendered operative and away from one another into an unlocked position, one of said members having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough and the other member having an internally threaded bore extending longitudinally through it and axially aligned with *the bore in said one member, a plug mounted rotatably, and confined against axial displacement, in the bore and provided with key-operable tumblers for locking it against rotation relatively to said one member, also provided with a slot for the key at the end farthest from said other member, a screw connected to the other end of the plug for rotation with said plug and iitting in the internally threaded bore in said other member so that it operates in response to rotation of the plug in one direction to shift the members into locking position and in response to rotation of the plug in the opposite direction to shift the members into unlocked position, and enacting, slidably engaging means for preventing relative rotation of the two members and confining them to rectilinear movement when they are shifted into and out of locking position.
3. In a lock of the character described, the combination of a pair of complementary members embodying coacting lock-means and shiftable towards one another into a locking position wherein said means are rendered operative and away from one another into an unlocked position, .a plug mounted rotatably in one of the members and provided with key-operable tumblers whereby it may be locked against rotation relatively to said one member, a screw connected to the plug and arranged so that it is applied to the other member and operates in response to rotation of the plug in one direction to shift the members into locking position, and in response to rotation of the plug in the opposite direction to shift the members into unlocked position, and means for preventing relative rotation of the two members and confining them to rectilinear movement when they are shifted into and out of locking position, comprising a pin connected rigidly to one of the members and fitting slidably within a socket in the other member.

In a lock of the character described, the combination of a pair of complementary lockmembers embodying opposite facing jaws and shiftable towards one another into a locking po- 3 sition wherein said jaws substantially abut and away from one another into an unlocked position, a plug mounted rotatably in one of the members and provided withekey-operable tumblers whereby it may be locked against rotation, a
' screw connected to the plug and arranged so that it is applied to the other member and operates in response to rotation of the plug in one direction to shift the members into locking position and in response to rotation of the plug in the opposite direction to shift the members into unlocked position, and a pin and socket connection between the two' lock-members whereby said members are held against relative rotation and are coni-ined to rectilinear movementrwhen they lare shifted into and out of locking position.
'5.'In a lock oilth'e` character described, the combination of an elongated main lock-member havingY a straight bore extending longitudinally therethrough, an elongated, complemental lockmember having a longitudinally extendinginternally threaded bore and arranged-so that it is longitudinally aligned with the main lock-member and is shiftable rectilinearly to and from the latter, coacting lock-means applied to the two members and adapted to be rendered operative upon shifting of the two lock-members together, a plug mounted rotatably, and confined against axial displacement, in the straight bore of the main lock-member and provided with key-operable tumblers for locking it against rotation relatively to said main lock-member and also provided with a slot for the key at the end thereof farthest from the complementary lock-member, and a screw formed integrally with and projecting from the other end of the plug and fitting within the threaded bore of the complemental member so that it operates in response to rotation of the plug to shift said complementary member to and from the main lock-member.
6. In a lock of the character described, the combination of an elongated main lock-member having a straight bore extending longitudinally therethrough, an elongated complementary lockmember having a longitudinally extending, internally threaded bore, coacting, slidably engaging means for holding the two members in endto-end relation and so that they are movable rectilinearly to and from one another, coacting lock-means applied to the two members and adapted to be rendered operative upon shifting 110 of the two members together, a plug mounted rotatably, and confined against axial displacement, in the bore of the main lock-member and provided with key-operable tumblers for holding it against rotation and also provided with a slot 115 for the key at the end thereof farthest from the complementary lock-member, and a screw connected to the other end of the plug for rotation with said plug and fitting within the threaded bore of the complementary member so that it 12'() operates in response to rotation of the plug to shift said complementary member to and from the main lock-member.

In a lock of the character described, the combination of an elongated main lock-member having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, an elongated complemental lock-member having a longitudinally extending, internally threaded bore, a pin and socket connection between the two members whereby the latter are supported in end-to-end relation and so that they may be shifted to and from one another, coacting lockmeans applied to the two members and adapted to be rendered operative in response to shift of the two members, a plug mounted rotatably 135 in the bore of the main lock-member and provided with key-operable tumblers whereby it may be locked against rotation, and a screw connected to the plug and fitting within the threaded bore of the complemental member and operative in response to rotation of the plug to shift said complemental member to and from the main lockmember.

In a lock of the character described, the combination of an elongated main lock-member Mg having a bore extending longitudinally through its central portion and a rearwardly extending jaw along one side thereof, an elongated, complemental lock-member positioned directly behind the main lock-member and having a forwardly tion relatively to the main look-member and also provided with a slot for the key at the front end thereof, and means projecting rearwardly from the rear end of the plug and extending into the complemental lock-member for locking the two members in their locking position.
