Description

Patented Aug. 28, 1934 UNITED STATES 1,971,440 Y`1 o1vrALE DooRLocK Ovila Aubertin, Masson, Quebec, Canada Application April 15, 1933, Serial No. 666.293 In Canada. August 16,` 1932 2 Claims. (Cl. 292-292) The present invention pertains to a novel door lock designed to be carried by travelers or other persons and mounted on a door Whenever required. The device is intended to be used when a person nds himself in a room not provided with a lock and wishes, nevertheless, to lock the door. l
In keeping with this object of the invention, the device comprises two simple and inexpensive parts which may be carried in the pocket in the same manner as a `bunch of keys or a pocket knife. One of these parts is designed to be fastenedto the inner edge of the door jamb and to project therefrom into the room. On this member is mounted `a stop which overlaps and abuts the swinging edge of the door, and means are provided to lock the stop against sliding on thesupporting member. Thus, the stop being immovable, locks the door in closed position and prevents the door from being pushed open by ordinary force.
The invention is fully disclosed by way of example in the following description and in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a cross section of a door structure showing the device in plan;
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the showing a side thereof;
Figure 3 isa similar View showing the other side; and
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the stop supporting member. f i
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
Figure l illustrates a fragmentary section of a door jamb l against which the free edge of a hinged door 2 is adapted to close. The numeral 3 indicates the usual space which remains between these parts when the door is fully closed.
A supporting member is inserted inthe space 3 in the manner presently to be described, and this member consists of a rectangular sheet metal blank 4 having both ends turned up as at 5 and the edges sharpened as at 6. Before the door 2 has been fully closed, the supporting member 4 is laid against the` edge of the jamb l, and one of the sharpened ends is driven into the jamb as illustrated` in Figure 1; The device is so positioned that a substantial portion thereof projects beyond the inner side of the jamband into the interior of the room. i
device The` member 4 serves to support a stop which Y e actually locks the door in closed position. The stop comprises a sheet metal sheath comprising two side portions 7 and 8 uformed by bending the `blank of metal at 10. The edgeopposite the bend is open as indicated by the-numeral 11, and through this opening is adapted to be slipped the projecting, portion of the supporting member 4. The side 7 is formed with vertical slots 12 communicating with the open edge 11. Any of these slots isadapted to receive the free or remaining bent end 5 of the member 4.
The side 8 of the sheath is formed with an outward dent or rib 13 which projects laterally to a sufficient extent to overlap and abut the door 2 as also shown in Figure l. In Vassembling the device, the sheath is so mounted on the member 4 with respect to the particular slot 12 receiving the end 5, that the rib- 13 is held in engagement with the door` 2. The provision of a plurality of slots 12 allows for ,such adjustment of the sheath in accordance with the thickness of the door and jamb or the distance of the free end 5 from these parts.`
As already indicated, the device constitutes a portable and temporary lock to be carried by travelers who occasionally find themselves in a room not provided with a lock in the door. In
such eases the lock of this invention is readily applied in the manner already described and like- Wise may be removed when no longer needed. The device consists of small, light parts and may therefore be carried in the pocket, preferably enclosed in a leather ease,`in the same manner as a bunch of keys or a pocket knife.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and deseribedit will be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim is:-
1. A door lock comprising a supporting member adopted to be secured to a door jamb to project therefrom and having a laterally extending outer end, a substantially U shaped sheath adapted to straddle said member With its bend resting on the upper edge of said member, one of the sides of said sheath having a series of slots perpendicular to the bend and extending through the edge opposite said bend, said slots being adapted to selectively receive said laterally exltending outer end of said supporting member.
2. A door lock comprising a supporting member adapted to be secured to a door jamb to project therefrom and `having a laterally extending outer end, a substantially U shaped sheath adapted to straddle said member with its bend resting on the upper edge of said member, one of the sides of said sheath having a series of slots perpendicular to the` bend and extending through the edge opposite said bend, said slots being adapted to selectively receive said laterally ex-` tending outer end of said supporting member, the other side of said sheath having a lateral rib adapted to abut the door in said jamb.
