MACHINE FOR TURNING TOOL-HANDLES, &c.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 19,711, dated March 23, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM PLUMB, of Honesdale, in the county of IVayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Turning Tool- Handles and Similar Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiicatiom'in Which- Figure 1, is a side view of my improve ment. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical scction of ditto, taken in the line (fa) Fig. A3. Fig. 3, is a plan or topl View of ditto. Fig. l, is a longitudinal section of a portion of ditto, taken in the line 1/V), (y), Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, taken in the line (x),` (m), Fig. 3.

This invention consists in the employment or use of a series of cutters combined and arranged With a pattern and stops as hereinafter described, whereby a series of the desired articles may be turned and cut successively from a bolt or stick in an eX- peditious and perfect manner.
To enable those skilled inthe art to fully understand and construct my invention I Will proceed to describe it.
A, A, represent two parallel bars Which are connected at their ends by cross pieces (a) (a) and form the bed B, of the machine, said bed being supported at a suitable height in any proper manner. Y
At one end of the bed B a head Cis attached, said head having a mandrel D, fitted Within it, on which a driving and idle pulley (b) (c) are placed. The inner end of the mandrel D, has a chuck (d) attached to receive one end of a bolt or stick E, from Which the articles are to be turned.
F, is a carriage which is fitted on the bed B, and allowed to slide freely thereon. This carriage has a cord Gr, attached to it, the. cord passing' over a pulley H, in the bed and having a Weight I, attached to itslower end. y
To the inner side of the carriage F, a socket J, is attached. This socket is internally of taper form and a slot or opening (e) is made longitudinally in it at one side to receive the cutting edge of a roughing off tool K, Which is attached t0 a plate (f) seon a pattern O, Which is securedto one side of the bed B, and forms a series of longitudinal proles of the articles to be turned. - P, is a bar or plate one end of which is jointed to the carriage F, at the'same side Where the bar L is jointed. This bar P, has a cutter Q, attached to its outer end, said cutter being what is technically termed a finisher and corresponding with the desired form of the articles to be turned. See Fig. 4. I
The outer end of the cutteror finishing tool Q is formed in such a Way as to cut off the articles from the bolt or stick as they are finished. This is effected by having a shoulder (it.) formed on the end of the tool Q, so as to operate like a chisel and having a fleam (i) attached to a bar which is attached to the bar or plate P, so as to be parallel With the tool Q and directly in front of it, the fleam being in line With the outer edge of the chisel (it), but projecting rather below it so as to cut in advance of the chisel and lighten the Work of the same and also enable it to cut ofi' the iinished articles smoothly so that their ends Will have a inished appearance. The operation of the chisel and tieam Will be clearly understood by referring to Fig. t.
To one side of the bed B, a shaft R is attached. This shaft is fitted in suitable bearings (j), (j), and has a handle S, attached to it. A series of stops (la) are also attached to the shaft R at equaldistances apa-rt corresponding to the desired length of the varticle to be turned. A lever T, is attached to the carriage F, at (Z) and a pendent pin (m) is attached to said lever. To the outer end of the bar L, a Weight (o) is attached.
The operation is asv follows: The bolt or stick E, Which is of square form the bolts or sticks being thus sawed out from` proper stuit, is tted at one end of the chuck (CZ) and the opposite end is fitted in the taper socket J. Motion is given. the mandrel D, and the bolt or stick E, is rotated, the roughing 0E tool K, rounding the bolt or stick and allowing it to pass through the socket, the Weight I drawing the carriage along on the bed as fast as the bolt or stick is rounded by said tool. The cutter M, as the stick passes through the socket cuts the articles in proper shape owing to the pattern Q, and weight (o), and when a sufficient length of the bolt or stick to form an article has passed through the socket J, the carriage F, is stopped by a stop (7c) on the shaft R. The operator then depresses the bar or plate P, by means of the lever T, and the finishing tool Q, completes the work, smoothing the same, while the chisel (71,) and lieam cut the article from the bolt or stick. The shaft R, is then turned so that the carriage will be released from the stop (7a), that impeded it, and the Weight I, draws the carriage along, while a second article or handle is being cutand so on, the stops (7c) arresting the motion of the carriage at the proper intervals so that the articles may be finished and cut off by the finishing tool Q.
l do not claim broadly and irrespective of the arrangement herein shown the employment or use of a pattern in connection with cutters attached to a carriage for such device has been previously used for the pur pose of turning various articles, but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The roughing off cutter K, socket J, forming cut-ter M, pattern O, finishing cutter Q, and stops lo, combined and arranged to 0perate as and for the purpose herein set forth.
