duplication dune ll, H931, Seriull No. 541.2% 2 Cloims. (til. ltd-1%) The present invention relates to furniture and may be utilized, for instance, in school fumiture in which a. book bus. and seat are employed.
An object of the invention is to provide al structure which will be durable in .use and inexpensive to menuiecture.
Another object is to provide e. common support for the boolr box, desk, table or other instrumentslity with which e. seat is commonly used, and the seat itself, the support having two side frames formed of tubular metal, as for instance, standard black welded pipe, and so bent as to give proper support and strength.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel brsclzet for supporting the book box from the forward uprights of the support.
A further object of the invention is to provide it novel means of bracing the forward uprights sit their connections with the horizontal loose pieces.
It still further object of the invention is to provide is novel seat support.
Another and still further object of the invention is to provide at novel means of connecting the soot support to the base pieces.
Still smother and further object is to provide e. novel means oi connecting the seat to its support so that the sect may be turned and also tilted.
To these and other ends the invention consists oi certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel i'eotures being pointed out in the appended claims.

In the illustrated embodiment of the inven tion, 1 indicates a. book box which may be of any suitable construction. Secured to the under side of the book box are two depending brackets, each of which comprises, in this instance, a. channel or elongated top plate 2 and e. depending tubular portion 3 constituting a. hollow post and having its upper end split and spread sport to provide two upwardly diverging arms 4 extending forwsrdly and rearwordly from w the upper end of the post, as clearly illustrated in Fig. d of the drawings. The arms are received within the channel at the lower face of the top piste 2 end fit between the side flanges thereof and ere welded to the top plate 2. The $55 inner feces of the curved portions of the arms 4 are depressed to form ribs 5 which are provided for the purpose of strengthening the arms 4 where they connect with the tubular portion or post 3. Slots 6 extend through the arms 8!? end the top plate 2 and receive fastening devices for securing the bracket to the under side of the book box.

'The tubular portion 7 is open at one side and the clamp comprises a. stripoi metal bent to provide the tubular portion or sleeve 7 and having its ends adjacent W said opening projecting therefrom to provide parallel ears 9 which are connected by an ed= justing bolt 10. The lower end of the tubular portion 3 is provided with openings ll which receive gripping projections 12 pressed inwardly from the sleeve 7 on opposite sides of the opening oi the said sleeve 7. The projections 12 are of suflicient length to pass beyond the inner face of the tubular portion 3 so as to enthe seat and its gage an upright 15 which may be passed into 10 j the lower end of the said tubular portion 3. The tightening bolt 10 for the clamp serves for anchoring one end of an inclined brace 13 which projects upwardly and inwardly therefrom and is secured at its upper end at 14 to the under 10s side of the book box 1. The bolt forms a. pivot for the lower end of the inclined brace 13 and the pivotal connection between the lower end of the inclined brace 13 and the clamp is adapted to permit or yield to the adjustment of the book box backwardly and forwardly on the bracket.
Each tubular member or post 3 connects with an upright 15 formed from standard black welded pipe bent or looped forwardly at 16 to connect with a horizontal base portion 17 also formed from the same stock. The upper end of the upright 15 flts within the lower end of the tubular portion 3 of the bracket and this telescoping connection between the bracket and the upright 15 permits the book box to be raised and lowered to adjust it to the desired height. After the adjustments of the bracket and the book box have been effected, the clamp of the bracket is operated to secure the bracket in its adjustment. To strengthen the connection between the upright 15 and the horizontal base portion 17 a sheet metal elbow 18 is provided having sleeves 19 and 20 at opposite ends fitting respectively about said upright 15 and the horizontal base portion 17 in rear of the loop 16. The base portions 17 converge rearwardly as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and each base portion has at its rear end a projected loop 21 formed by bending the stock upwardly and then forwardly forming an upper arm,. which has a brace connection with the horizontal base portion in advance of the loop 21. Feet 17 are depressed or bent downwardly from the horizontal base portion 17 at each end loop. The horizontal tubular base portion is compressed laterally at opposite sides of the upper portion and depressed at the lower portion below the lower face of the horizontal base portion and present flat lower faces to the supporting surface to form the feet 17a, said portion being substantially inverted T-shaped in cross section.
The brace connection between the upper arm of the loop 21 and the horizontal base portion 17, in this instance, is in the form of a guide -member and comprises a sheet metal plate 22,
the lower edge of which is turned under and welded to the horizontal base portion 17. One of the side edges of the plate 22 is shortened and is bent substantially at right angles to form a side flange which projects inwardly at 24 over the horizontal base portion 17 and is then bent rearwardly at right angles at 25.
The other side edge of the plate 22 is bent inwardly substantially at right angles at 26 approximately one-half the thickness of the flange 24 and a. portion of it is extended rearwardly at 27, the rearwardly extended portion being pressed into an approximately semi-cylindrical seat 28 for the end of the loop 21. The combined guide and brace has a second plate like piece 26a provided with a rearwardly extending portion welded or otherwise secured to the rearwardly extending portion 27 of the combined guide and brace. The rearwardly extending portion of the piece 26a. is pressed to form an approximately semi-cylindrical seat 30 for the inner end of the upper arm of the loop The upper arm of the loop 21 fits in the two semi-cylindrical seats 28 and 30, the seat 28 being arranged at the outer side of the upper arm of the said loop 21 and the seat 30 being arranged at the inner side of the same. The said second piece extends inwardly in parallel relation to the portion 24 and has a forwardly projected flange 31 being in the plane of the flange 25 and extending the full length of the said second piece. The second piece 26a. completes the rear portion of the combined guide shaped member having a top or cross piece 32 and brace as clearly illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings.
The guides serve to guide a seat support which, as illustrated, comprises an inverted U- enlarged at the center at 33 and provided with depending channeled arms 34 which move on the guides. The channeled arms of the seat support fit within the guides and conform to the configuration of the same, as clearly i1- lustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings. This seat support may be held in an adjusted position in the guides by providing each guide with a flange gripping means comprising an adjustable bolt 35 connecting the sides of the guide and having supported on it a sleeve 36 which lies within the guide and which extends across the space between the side flanges of the channel of the adjacent arm of the U-shaped supporting member. The ends of the sleeve 36 are spaced from the side flanges of the guide so that the side flanges of the arm of the seat support may extend between the ends of the sleeve 36 and the inner faces of the side flanges of the guide. By tightening the bolt 35, the side flanges of the arm of the seat supporting member are forced against the ends of the sleeve 36 by the side flanges of the guide, whereby the seat support is securely held in an adjusted position.
The seat may be of any desired construction. In this instance, it comprises a seat portion 37 having a back 38 rigid therewith. The seat has a combined rotary or turning movement and a tilting movement on the seat support. To this end, the seat support has a disk 39 welded to 110 the connectingportion of the U-shaped member, while the seat 37 has a disk 40 rigidly secured to the under side thereof. These disks are both made of sheet metal and the upper disk 40 has a downwardly pressed circular portion 41 and the lower disk 39 has an upwardly pressed circular portion 41. These circular portions 41 form circular ribs, which provide bearing surfaces for the disks and space the body portions of the disks from each other and provide a central circular space, in which is arranged the means hereinafter described, for limiting the turning movement of the seat. An annular bearing member 42 consisting of a flat ring of brass or other suitable material is interposed between the circular ribs formed by the pressed portions 41. The ring is secured to the circular rib of the lower disk 39 and is provided with openings 43 to contain a lubricant. The upper disk 40 carries a depending pivot pin 50 which extends through the lower disk and through the cross piece 32 of the U-shaped member. Below, the latter it is surrounded by a coiled spring 44, which at one end abuts against the under side of the seat support and 136 the other end of the spring abuts against an adjustable nut 45 of the pivot pin 50. This pin will confine the seat to a turning movement on the support and yet will, at the same time, permit the seat to be tilted backwardly owing to 140 the sliding and relative tilting movement of the pivot bolt in the opening of the lower disk 39.
In the tilting movement of the seat the latter fulcrums on the rear portion of the circular rib or portion 41 of the lower disk and the length 145 of the pivot bolt and the adjustment of the nut thereof limit the tilting movement of the seat. The front portion of the upper disk 40 separates from the front portion of the lower disk 39 in the tilting movement of the seat.
Two arcuate stop plates 46 and 47 are located in the central circular space defined by the circular ribs or portions 41 and are secured respectively to the lower and upper disks 39 and 40 and have their end portions 48 bent substantially at right angles to engage each other and thereby limit the turning movement of the seat in both directions. These arcuate stop plates 46 and 47 are spaced apart equally at their ends when the seattis in a central or normal position, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be understood that in the foregoing description of the specific embodiment of the invention, the book box shown in the drawings merely represents, generically, one of a number of instrumentalities commonly used in association with seats and chairs and others that will readily come to the minds of those skilled in the art may be substituted for it without departing from the spirit of my invention. As a matter of fact, the top or lid of the common type of school box desk functions generally as a support.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In furniture, the combination of a base portion having an upright, a table member, an attaching bracket supporting the table member and having a tubular post telescoping over said upright and provided with an opening in the wall thereof, a tubular clamp arranged on the tubular post and secured at the back to the same and open at the front and provided thereat with projecting ears, said clamp having a fixed projection extending through the opening in the post and engaging the upright, and a clamping bolt connecting said ears and maintaining said projection in engagement with the upright and securing the post in its adjustment.
2. In furniture, the combination of a base portion having an upright, a table member, an attaching bracket supporting the table member and having a tubular post telescoping over said upright and provided with an opening in the wall thereof, a tubular clamp arranged on the tubular post and secured at the back to the same and open at the front and provided thereat with projecting ears, said clamp having a fixed projection extending through the opening in the post and engaging the upright, a clamping bolt connecting said ears and maintaining said projection in engagement with the upright and securing the post in its adjustment, and an inclined brace pivoted at its lower end to the clamp by said bolt and extending upwardly and inwardly from the clamp and secured at its upper end to the table member.
3. In furniture, the combination of a horizontal base portion and a rearwardly projecting loop composed of upper and lower sides, the upper side of the loop forming an arm located above the horizontal base portion, a brace connecting the arm and the horizontal base portion at opposite sides of the loop, and provided with guiding means, a seat support having an arm slidable in the guiding means to adjust the seat support, and means for securing the seat support in its adjustment.
4. In furniture, the combination of a pair of spaced horizontal base portions provided with rearwardly projecting loops composed of upper and lower sides, the upper sides of the loops forming arms located above the horizontal base portions, upright braces connecting the horizontal base portions and the arms of the loops and provided with guiding means, and an inverted U-shaped seat support having spaced arms slidable in said guiding means to adjust the seat support, and means for securing the seat support in its adjustment.
5. In furniture, the combination with a supporting table member, of two supporting members therefor, each comprising a horizontal base portion and a loop extending rearwardly and upwardly therefrom, a vertical guide bridging the loop of each supporting member, a seat, and a support for the seat engaging the guides.
6. A support for furniture having a horizontal tubular base portion compressed laterally and depressed below the lower face of the horizontal base portion and presenting flat lower faces to the supporting surface to form feet, said portion being substantially inverted T-shape in cross section.
'7. In furniture, the combination of a horizontal base portion and a loop projecting rearwardly from the base portion composed of upper and lower sides, the upper side of the loop forming an arm located above the horizontal base portion, a brace connecting the arm and the horizontal base portion and provided with a substantially semi-cylindrical seat fitting against one side of said arm, and a plate-like piece secured to the brace and having an approximately semi-cylindrical seat fitted against the other side of said arm and cooperating with the semicylindrieal seat of the brace to form a pocket for the arm.
