12 Claims. (Cl. 216-171) This invention relates to an improvement in hinges and more particularly to the single knuckle type. 1
The preferred embodiment of the invention discloses a hinge having an arrangement for preventing the removal of the leaf elements from each other except at a predetermined point.
Prior to this invention hinges of the single knuckle type have been formed from leaves which, while often exact duplicates, produced a dissymmetric unit when assembled. The result ofthis dissymmetry amounts not merely ,to an artistic objection but indicates that; by reason of the reversal of the connecting leaves, the attaching portions are not alike. Consequently, it sometimes occurs that mortises are incorrectly cut into the door and jamb simply because the workman has had to cut dissimilar mortises and located the door mortise on the jamb. The'present invention discloses a pair of hinge leaves, the shank portions of which are of the same size and inthe same plane. This is a distinct advantage since it permits the use of symmetricmortises in both door and jamb, the mortise being also symmetric with respect to its own center line. Since the mortise in both door and jamb are identical in height, depth and location, no error in mounting a hinge of the type hereinafter disclosed can occur. A further disadvantage of currently manuiacture'd hinges of'this type will be noted' from the fact that due either to inaccurate manufacturing or improper mounting or assembly, an unsightly gap occurs between the engaging surfaces of the upper and lower knuckles. The present invention, through the provision of a collar attached to or abutting one of the knuckles and having a recess into which the other of the knuckles projects, overcomes this objectionand at the same time provides a lubricant reservoir -for the relatively 'movable elements; It is by means of this recess that any lubricant applied. to-thehin'ge is concealed'from view and prevented from appearing on the outer surfaces of the A still further objectionto the oursometimes occurs that a door supported'by'a hinge of this type receives an upwardly directed force which tends to or actually does disengage "the'hinge elements. Referring to the drawing and particularly to Figure 1, the invention, generally indicated by ,the referencev numeral 10, is shown. comprising a pair of elements 11 and 12. The element 11 comprises a door mounting portion 13, a shank portion 14 and a knuckle 16. Openings 17, in the portion 13, are adapted. to receive screws for attaching. the element to a door. The element '12 comprises a frame mounting portion 18, shank portion 19 and a knuckle 21, and is adapted to be attached to' a frame by means of screws which project through openings 22 in the portiorilS.
The shank'portions 14 and 19 project from one edge of the portions Band 18. The knuckle 16 is integrally formed on the upper portion of the shank 14 and terminates at its lower end in a fiat 29 hearing face 23. Similarly the knuc kle 21 is formedon the lower portion of the shank 19 and terminatesat its upper endlin aface 24. It is pointed out that, although the elements 11 and 12 cal, it iscontemplated to make use of a hinge of this type for purposes wherein one of the elements may be entirely disproportionate to the other. For example, a hinge of this type may be utilized to support an automobile door or anyl other door in which the mounting thereof is not in accord with the standard entrance door mounting in whichthe elements of -'a hinge are substantially duplicate. Openings26 and 27, drilled axially a limited depth in the knuckles 16 and 21 from the surfaces 23 and 24, are each adapted to receive an equal portion of a pivot pin 28. The opening 27 is preferably a drive fit for the pin 28 to prevent removal thereof from the knuckle 21. A hinge comprising a pair of elements having symmetrical shank portions, a knuckle on each of said shank portions, a pivot pin connecting said knuckles, a collar secured against rotation relative to one of said knuckles and interposed between and projecting beyond the lateral limits of both of said knuckles to form a shoulder, one of said shank portions having a notch for receiving said shoulder, said shoulder having a slot for receiving and vertically releasing one of said shank portions whereby to permit disengagement of said elements.
11. A hinge comprising a pair of elements, duplicate knuckles formed integral with said elements, a pivot pin connecting said knuckles, means on said pin interposed between said knuckles, said means forming with said knuckles a symmetrical pivot portion of said hinge, said means including further means engageable with one of said elements for retaining said elements in operative pivotal relationship.
12. A hinge comprising a pair of elements, shank portions on-said elements having symmetrical proportion, a knuckle on each of said shank portions, a pin mounted on one of said knuckles, means on said pin inabutment with and fixed relative to the pin mounting knuckle, said means interfitting with the other of said knuckles and having a shoulder projecting beyond the lateral limits of both of said knuckles, one of said shank portions being notched to receive and interfit with said shoulder whereby to retain said elements in operative pivotal relationship.
