Description
N. FOLSOM. Water-Closet.
No. 196,792; Patented Nov. 6, 1 877.
fittest. Inventor.
PETERS, FNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTOMD UNITED STATES NORTON FOLSOM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
l M PROVEM ENT IN W-ATER-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,792, dated November 6,1877; application filed June 12, 1877. A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NoRToN FoLsoM, M. D., of N o. 103 Boylston street, in the city of Boston and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Glosets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the novel construction of the bowl of a water-closet with a flange formed in one piece therewith to project outwardly as well as inwardly from its upper rim, and thus serve as a tray around the top of the bowl to catch and conduct into the latter any fluids which may, from any cause, slop or spill over while being poured or voided into it, and which will present no joint or recess to retain any portion of the fluid.
The object of my invention is to provide a water-closet bowl which may be used as a urinal gr ansink without the liability of producing fflfensive odors, such as arise because of the retention and deposit of impure matter in the joints formed between the bowl and the surrounding fittings, as is the case in the customary combination for this purpose of separate metallic or metal-lined trays with detached watercloset bowls.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the,
construction of my improved water-closet bowl, Figure 1 being a top, and Fig. 2 a bottom, view thereof in perspective, and Fig. 3 a vertical section.
A is the dish or basin of the bowl; B, the rim for joint with the water-closet trap and soil-pipe; O, the socket for connection of water-pipe; D, a flange projecting from the upper rim of the basin, in one piece therewith, inwardly over its inner edge, to prevent any outflow or overflow of its contents, or of the water admitted from the flush-pipe, and outwardly far enough to form a flat dish or tray, which, surrounding the opening into the basin, shall serve to catch all drippin gs that may fall outwardly in pouring fluids into the basin. The outer edge of the flange, forming thetray, may be recessed with a continuous groove, w, in the face thereof, to receive a rubber gasket, which, being inserted therein when the bowl is fitted in place, will form a close water and air tight joint between the tray and the encircling wood-work, and will protect the tray from all danger because of undue strain thereon. E E are brackets, projecting outwardly from the basin, to support the projecting flange D.
The basin A, flange D, and brackets E E, as well as the socket G, are all cast or molded in one piece, free from joints, so that there can be no concealed lodgment of impure particles about the vessel when in use.
This combined tray and bowl thus formed in one piece is preferably manufactured of china-ware, being molded of white clay, and
dried and baked in the customary manner; or
it may be cast of metal, and enameled, ja-
panned, or otherwise finished, as is usual in the art.
I claim as my invention An earthenware or porcelain water-closet bowl, provided at the top with the double flange, curved inwardly and projecting horizontally outward, substantially as shown and described.
NORTON FOLSOM. In the presence of- E. G. PETERS, M. M. WEsToN.
