My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a catamenial pad and holder therefor, and it is an object of the present invention to provide a pad of this class which will be durable,

sanitary, easily cleaned and sterilized, possessed of maximum absorbing qualities, cool and comfortable to the wearer, and sufficiently flexible to easily and quickly conform to required shapes developed upon movement of the wearer. I It is another object of the present invention to I provide a pad of this class consisting of a holder formed from sponge rubber or the like and containing with a pocket or cavity formed therein a quantity of highly absorbent material such as natural sponge.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a holder for a pad of this nature which will also be sanitary, leakproof, and easily cleaned and sterilized.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by a ref-' erence to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which,

The pad is formed from a piece 7 of sponge rubber or the like, it being necessary that the material from which the main body of the pad is formed be stain proof, absorbent, and sufficiently yieldable and flexible as not to render the wearing of the same uncomfortable and yet of such a nature as not to cause excessive perspiration. Formed in the member '7 is a cavity or pocket 8 in which is loosely positioned small pieces 9 of sea sponge. This sea sponge, before being deposited in the pocket or cavity 8, is bleached and sterilized, preferably by a bath in a strong solution of muriatic acid. The cover 10 which is of the same material as the member '7 and which, in the manufacture of the device, is cut from the member 7 in the formation of the cavity 8, is then cemented in position to serve as a closure for the cavity 8. A plurality of perforations 11 are formed in this cover 10 so that the cover is foraminated so as to permit the passage of moisture and liquids through the cover 10 so that the same may be absorbed and held in absorption by the sponge 9. In use, the movements of the body of the wearer will effect, on account of the flexing of the pad, a suction effect through the openings 11 which will facilitate passage of liquid through these openings 11 and at the same time cause sufficient air circulation as to prevent any uncomfortable heating of the body.

A holder for the pad is formed preferably from rubber and consists of a main body 12 having the edges 13 and 14 directed inwardly and secured in overlapping relation at their ends by the rigid cross members 15 to which hooks 16 are secured, whereby the device may be attached to a sanitary belt" or the like. With the use of this holder in conjunction with such a pad, the pad is always held firmly in position against the body, and on account of the yieldability of the pad itself and the holder, extreme comfort is afforded the wearer. By having the holder of rubber or similar leakproof material, a desirable device of this kind is provided which will eliminate any possibility of staining the clothes.

In use, the pad may be washed and-all absorption removed therefrom and on account of the material from which it is made, the same may be, immediately after the washing, used again. It is, of course, obvious that the device may be easily and quickly sterilized by a suitable washing in a sterilizing composition, and on account of the presence of the sponge within the pad itself, it is desirable before using the device after it has been out of use for some time that the entire structure be thoroughly saturated with a sterilizing solution which may then be washed therefrom so that the sponge within the cavity will be restored to its soft, flexible condition and the device rendered sanitary before use.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A catamenial pad of the class described, comprising: a main body formed from sponge rubber or the like and having a cavity therein; a quantity of absorbent sponge material in and filling said cavity; and a cover for said cavity for permanently sealing said sponge material therein, said cover being of the same material as said body and having a plurality of openings therein.

2. A catamenial pad of the class described, comprising: a main body formed from sponge rubber or the like and having a cavity therein; a quantity of absorbent material in and filling said cavity; and a cover for said cavity for permanently sealing said absorbent material therein, said cover having a plurality of openings therein.
