"4 Claims. (01. 227-8) This invention relates to a safety belt for use by workers working in high places, sailors and other persons, the general object of'the' invention being to provide a belt for passing around I the waist of the user, depending portions on the belt having straps for passing around the legs of the user, a vertically arranged back member connected with the belt and carrying shoulder straps which are connected to the front of the belt when the device is in use, and a looped cable attached to spring members fastened to the rear part of the belt and to which a rope or cable is adapted to be connected, which rope or cable is connected to a stationary part, whereby if the person wearing the belt should fall, the cable and the belt would stop his fall and thus prevent him from being injured or killed.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination '20; and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use. Figure 2 is an elevation of the device in open position.

Figure 3 is an elevation with parts broken away, of the spring device.

Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 2. In these drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the belt which is formed of suitable material and the numeral 2 indicates a pair of pieces of leather or the like sewn and riveted to the end portions of the belt, these members being slightly spaced from the ends, as shown. One member carries a number of perforated tongues 3 and the other a number of buckles 4 for receiving the tongues so that the belt can be fastened around the waist of the wearer, as shown in Figure 1. A vertically agarranged strap 5 is placed under each of the members 2 and has a buckle 6 connected with its upper edge and a flap 7 is placed under each buckle 6. A depending strap 8 is attached to each end portion of the belt and has a loop 9 at its lower end through which passes a buckle carrying strap 10, this strap being adapted to be passed around a leg of the user, as also shown in Figure 1.

A wide strap of suitable material, indicated at 11, has its lower end fastened to the central portion of the belt 1 by rivets and stitching and a spaced pair of straps 12 have their lower ends connected to the-upper end of the strap 11 by rivets and stitching, these straps 12 forming shoulder straps and having the perforated straps 0 13 connected to their free edges, which-are adapted to engage the buckles 6, as shown in Figure 1.

Thus it will be seen that when the parts are attached together, as shown in Figure 1, the belt is firmly attached to the user. r r

A pair of convergent straps 14 is fastened to the central portion of the belt 1, one on each side of the lower end of the strap 11, these straps 14 being double and fastened to the belt and a loop forming member 15 has a part passing through the looped upper end of each strap 14. A cylinder 16 is connected to each loop member 15 by a bolt or pin 17 carried by the lower end of the cylinder and passing through the loop 15, the lower end of the cylinder being slotted, as shown at 18, to receive part of the loop 15. A cap 19 is threaded to the upper end of each cylinder and has a hole therein for the passage of an eye bolt 20. A spring 21 encircles each eye bolt and is located in the cylinder and has one end bearing against the cap 0 and its other end against a nut 22 on the lower end of the rod. A looped cable 23 has its ends connected to the eyes of the bolts 20 and the two parts of this cable extend upwardly through a ring 24 carried by a looped strap 25 which is con- 5 nected to the upper end of the wide strap 11. The upper end of this cable 23 is adapted to be connected to a cable which is suspended from a suitable support so that if the wearer should fall, this cable and the belt will arrest his fall and hold 90, him suspended so that he can easily be rescued.

It will, of course, be understood that the springs 21 act as shock absorbers when the person wearing the belt reaches the end of the supporting cable.

A strip 26 is attached to the strap 11 and has its ends connected to the upper ends of the cylinders.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is 1. A safety belt of the class described comprising a belt for encircling the waist of a wearer, a back strap having its lower end connected to the 0 central part of the belt, shoulder straps connected to the upper end of the back strap, means for connecting the free ends of said shoulder straps to front portions of the belt, spring means connected with the central portion of the belt, and a looped cable having its ends connected with the spring means and its upper part adapted to be connected to a cable connected to a stationary support.

A safety belt of the class described comprising a belt for encircling the waist of a wearer, a back strap having its lower end connected to the central part of the belt, shoulder straps connected to the upper end of the back strap, means for connecting the free ends of said shoulder straps to front portions of the belt, spring means connected with the central portion of the belt, a looped cable having its ends connected'with the spring means and its upper part adapted-to be connected to a cable connected to a stationary support, straps depending from thebel-t," and leg encircling straps carried thereby.

3. A safety belt of the class described comprising a belt for encircling the waist of' the user,
