Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan View of the central portion of the tip.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the tip or mouth piece which consists of a short strip of thin flexible material such as paper or thin sheet cork or any other material that may be adapted i350. for the purpose.
Where the tip is formed of paper I prefer to treat the same so as to render the same practically moistureproof and to counteract any tendency of the tip to adhere to the lips of the smoker.
'15@ This strip of thin flexible material is substantially `elliptical in shape and extending transverselyfacross the central portion oriareal of the strip is a row or rows of small apertures 11, vWhich permits the ready "passage fof. smokev through the tip andat the! same* time prevents'the passage 1 of tobacco bers.` i .i f One surface'of thestrip-is coated with a suitableiadhesive, Wherebythe strip Willlreadily ad here to the-Wrapper yof -thefcigarette and which 65 wrappe'ris,usuallyformed ofthin paper.
'Ifhesection` oft thin flexible material forming thetip o r mouth piece isapplied. to one end` of the cigarette with Vthe endportions of the tip extending longitudinally of thelcigarette on `di- 70 ametrically opposite-"sides 'thereof and` the :intermediate perforatedfiportion of the stripfis 'pressed into the .lend 'of the cigarette Wrapp'enso that `itloccupies avslightly'inset position relative to the end edge of the cigarette wrapper.. 1 7
i The greatest width 'off/the central portion oi .5 the stripfflo is slightly greater-than theinternal diameter-of the cigarettetwrapper andas a result of these relative dimensions, the endportion'of the cigarette will be-given an-oval shape when the intermediate portion ofthe strip-is inserted in 50 the end of the wrapper. i y
A suitable tool suchxas 12 V(Fig. 5) is utilized forforcing theV intermediate portion of the strip into `the end portion of the cigarette Wrapper', 'said tool being substantially ellipticaliintcross section .8.. i and projecting from thel working face of said toola'at the iopposite ends thereof, 1 are substantiallyy triangular .lugsl 13 that engage ,the corresponding 'edges Iof: thev intermediate portion 4of Athe stripand 4pressing the -engagedportions of said strips inwardly beyond the intermediate perforated portion of said strip, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 5.
This disposition of the intermediate edges of the strip at the ends of the perforated portion therea of, takes up those substantially triangular areas of the strip to the sides of the end portions of the substantially elliptical shape imparted to the end of the cigarette Wrapper, thereby preventing the punching of materiel in the tip that lies im- 1.90 mediately against the inner surface of the wrapper between the inset perforated central portion of the tip and the end of the cigarette Wrapper and consequently providing a smooth finished inner surface. ,1,95
The substantially triangular areas that are taken up by pressing the ends of the perforated intermediate portion of the tip into the Wrapper as just described, are designated by the numeral 14 in Fig. 6. 2,10
When the tip is properly applied to the end of the cigarette wrapper, the end portions of said tip overlie and are secured to the outer face of the cigarette wrapper on diametrically opposite sides thereof and portions 16 of the tip immediately adjacent to the perforated central portion thereof, lie immediately against and are secured to the inner face of the end portionv of the cigarette wrapper and the perforated intermediate portion 1'7 of the tip forms an inset wall within the end portion of the wrapper, with the opposite end portions of said insetrend wall extending slightly inward from the end of the wrapper, as designated by 18 in` Fig. 5. K
When the adhesive utilized for securing` the tip to the wrapper becomes dry, the tip provides a substantial reenforcing mouth piece for the end of the cigarette and the insetperforated wall 17 prevents collapse of the end portion of the cigarette and at the same time said perforated wall effectually prevents particles and iibersvof the tobacco filler from passing into the smokers mouth. i
Any number of perforations may be usedv in the intermediate or central portion of the tip, but it is of course important that said openings be of such small size as to permit the ready passage of smoke therethrough and at the same time to prevent the passage of tobacco fibers.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a cigarette tip or mouth piecev that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the funcl tions for which it is intended and the tucking of the vperforated central portion of the strip 10 into'the end of the cigarette wrapper materially reenforces the endrof the cigarette that is engaged by the smokers lips and thereby affords added comfort'to the smoker;
. mouth piece applied to one end of said cigarette,
saidtip or mouth piece comprising a single strip of thin flexible material having. its end portions secured to the wrapper of the cigarette on opposite sides: thereof, the intermediate portion of said strip being perforated, said perforated intermediate portion occupying a position within the cigarette wrapper, inset from the end thereof and portions at opposite ends of said perforated inset wall being extended inwardly within the cigarette wrapper beyond the plane occupied by said perforated wall to reenforce the tipped end of the cigarette and prevent collapse thereof.
Y 2.-.,The combination with a cigarette,A of a tip ormouth piece applied to one en d of said cigarette, said tip or mouth piece comprising a single strip of thin flexible material having its end portions secured to the wrapper of the cigarette on opposite sides thereof, the intermediate portion of said strip being perforated, said perforated intermediate portion occupying a position within theciga'rette wrapper", inset from the end thereof portions of the strip, of material at the ends of the inset perforated central portion being tucked inwardly within the cigarette wrapper beyond the plane occupied by the inset perforated portion. so as to reenforce the tipped end of the cigarette against collapse by external pressure and those portions of the strip between the inset perforated wall and the end of the cigarette wrapper being secured to the latter by a suitable adhesive.
3. The combination with. a cigarette, ofY a tip or mouth piece applied toY one end of said cigarette andy having its end portions `secured to the externalface of the cigarette wrapper, the intermediate portion of said tip or mouth piece being 4 perforated and arranged within the wrapper at a point inset from the end thereof and the end portions of said inset perforated portion extending inwardly so as to occupy inclined .positions within said wrapper beyond the plane occupied bythe main body .of said perforated insetportion and thereby reinforce the tipped-end of the cigarette against collapse from external pressure.
4. The combination Vwith a cigarette, of a tip or mouth piece applied to one end of said cigarette and having its Vendportions secured to the external face of the cigarette wrapper, the inter'- mediate portion of said tipv ormouth'piece being perforated and arranged within the .Wrapper at a point inset from the end thereof, the 'end portions of said inset perforated portion extending inwardly so as lto occupy inclined positions within said wrapper beyond the place occupied by the main body of said perforated inset portion to reenforce the tipped end of the cigarette against N collapse from external pressure and portions of 125 said tip or mouth piece adjacent to the inset perforated portion being secured to the inner face of the cigarette wrapper.
