Conversely when the pull is released from any operating position tending to open the fastener, the inherent elasticity of the locking members 23 and 24 automatically locks the slider, the cam face 26 being so shaped, as shown in Fig. 3, as to move the pull out of the way. During closing of the fastener, the inclined locking points simply ride over the fastener elements and do not substantially interfere with the movement of the slider. It will be noted that the locking points are staggered a slight amount so as to engage between a pair of locking members on opposite stringers.
In Figs. 7 and 8 a at metal strip 31 forming the combined locking and pull attaching member is bent over around the rear end of the slider and its end 32 is again bent to extend inwardly into the rear end of the slider. It will be understood that a suitable recess is formed in the slider as in Figs. 1 to 6 and after insertion of the end 32 of the locking member, the metal of the slider is pressed rmly 4into Contact with the end of the locking member thus holding it securely in place. Obviously the locking member may be held by any other suitable means. By bending the locking member 3l around upon itself, the spring pressure on the locking point tending to hold it in contact with the fastener elements, is reduced. At its front end a single locking point 33 is provided to engage one of the rows -of fastener elements but if desired, it will be understood that a second locking point may be used. The operation is substantially the same as in Figs. 1 to 6.'
In the modication illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 a locking member 34 is pivotally connected at one end to the slider` by means of laterally projecting bearings 35 engaging under a pair of ears 36 which are cut out of the top wing of the slider and bent upwardly to the desired shape. The front end of the locking member has the same construction as in Figs. 7 and 8. In assembling the locking member with the slider it may be bent in its middle portion so that the bearings and locking point will go into their respective positions and then the locking member is straightened out again to hold it in place. The operation is generally the same except that instead of relying on spring pressure to hold the locking point in engagement with the fastener elements. the weight of the locking member itself produces this result. This construction will be found suitable in many applications where gravity will act in the right direction normally to lock the slider,
In Figs. l1 and 12, a locking member 37 is pivotally connected to the slider by a pair of ears 38 and a rivet 39. The locking member is extended on around the slider and has a springlike extension 40 engaging the bottom side of the slider which normally holds the member in locking engagement with "the fastener elements. In Figs. 13 and 14 the slider is cut out at the rear end to provide a recess 43 and a locking member 44 has a thickened portion 45 tting in this recess and pivotally connected to the slider by a suitable pin 46. The portion 45 is extended below the pin 46 to provide a camming portion 47 which is normally in engagement with a spring 48 permanently anchored in the metal of the slider. The spring 48 bearing against the cam portion 47 acts to hold the locking member 44 normally in locking engagement with the fastener elements.
It will be noted that the cam surface 26 is spaced from the face of the slider a distance less than the thickness of the element 30 of the pull member so that when force is applied to the pull member in any direction to open the fastener the element 30 will engage the cam surface to release the locking projection 27.
As a result of my invention, it will be observed that an improved locking slider for slide fasteners has been devised which is comparatively cheap to manufacture and which possesses the required characteristics of strength and simplicity necessary for practical use. By the resilient action obtained with a spring or by the resiliency of the member itself, the locking member springs into locking position immediately on release of the pull member regardless of its position at the time of release. Thus the pull does not have to be pushed down against the slider to permit locking. The locking action is accomplished at the narrow end of the slider where the fastener elements are interlocked thereby providing a very secure locking effect and at the same time, it is conveniently controlled by a pull member which is longitudinally shiftable along the slider. The combined advantages of a longitudinally shifting pull and a secure locking device are thereby obtained.
While I have in this application specifically shown and described several embodiments which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these embodiments are merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as dened in the following claims.
What is claimed is,
l. In combination, a slider for separable fasteners, a locking member having one end fixed to said slider and the other end projecting through an opening in said slider and movable into and out of engagement with the fasteners, and means adjacent said opening for positively limiting the outward movement of said locking member.
2. In a separable fastener, a pair of stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, and a locking member attached to the slider and normally resiliently held in engagement with at least one of said fastener elements, said locking member having one end projecting into a recess in said slider and means for positively retaining said projecting end of said locking member in said recess.
3. In a separable fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, a locking member having one end secured to the rear end of said slider and extending longitudinally thereof, the
other end of said member being inclined and projecting through an inclined aperture in the front end of said slider, and a pull member slidably connected to said locking member.
4l. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a body portion movable along the fastener elements, a locking member having one end pivotally secured to the slider and the other end movable in relation to the slider into and out of locking engagement with the fastener elements, the axis of pivoting being parallel to the top surface of the slider body, said locking member extending substantially parallel to the slider adjacent its rear end and at its front end being inclined at an angle of less than with said slider.
5. In a separable fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage the fastener elements, a combined locking and pull attaching member having one end attached to the slider and the other end projecting through an opening in the slider, said opening having an inclined wall for limiting the outward movement of said member from said slider and a pull member connected to said locking member for controlling the same and for actuating the slider along the stringere.
6. In a slide fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage the fastener elements, a locking member having one end rigidly mounted in the slider and having its other end resiliently held normally in locking engagement with the fastener stringers and movable outwardly therefrom, means engageable with the front end of said member for positively limiting its outward movement, and a combined lock controlling and slider actuating member slidably mounted on said locking member.
7. In a slide fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage the fastener elements, a locking member carried by the slider and movable into and out of locking engagement with said fastener elements, and a spring member permanently imbedded in the metal of said sliderV and normally resiliently holding said locking member in locking engagement.
8. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, a relatively movable locking member having a pivotal connection with the slider at one end, the axis of pivoting being parallel with the top surface of the slider body permitting free relative swinging movement, and at its other end projecting into a recess in the slider, said other end adapted to move into engagement with the fastener elements to lock the slider means on the slider for positively limiting outward movement of said locking member, and a slider actuating member connected to the slider solely by said movable locking member.
9. In a slide fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements 'along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage the fastener elements, a locking member carried by the slider and movable into and out of locking engagement with said fastener elements, a spring engaging said slider and locking member and acting on said locking member to hold it normally in locking engagement, and a pull member attached to the slider by said locking member, said locking member being movable out of locking engagement by said pull member. r,

In a slide fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage anddisengage the fastener elements, a locking member movably attached to said slider and having a `locking projection adapted in one position of the member toengage said fastener elements for locking the slider and in another position of said member to be disengaged from said fastener elements to release the slider, a combined lock-controlling and slider-actuating member operatively connected to said locking member and arranged to hold said locking member in unlocking position while being used to actuate the slider in opening the fastener, and means including a spring for automatically returning said locking member to locking position on releaseA of said combined lock-operating and slider-actuating member regardless of the position of such lock operating member at the time of its release.
11. In combination, a slider for separable fasteners, a locking member having one end connected to said slider and the other end projecting through an opening in said slider and movable through said opening into and out of engagement with interlocking elements of the fastener, means for positively limiting outward movement of said locking member, and a lock controlling member operatively connected to said locking member and arranged to positively lift the locking end of said locking member out of locking engagement.

In a slide fastener, a pair of fastener stringers having rows of cooperating fastener elements along their adjacent edges, a slider movable along the stringers to interlock and disengage the fastener elements, a locking member attached to the slider at one end and having a locking projection at its other end adapted in one position of the member to engage the fastener elements to lock the slider and in another position of the locking member to be disengaged from said elements to release the slider, the locking projection being normally resiliently held in locking position, a slider pull connected to said locking member, cooperating means comprising a cam surface on the locking member adjacent the locking projection and spaced from the face of the slider, and an element on said slider pull of greater thickness than the space between the cam surface and the slider which engages said cam surface, to hold the locking member in releasing position when force is applied to the pull in any direction tending to open the fastener, said cam surface and pull being constructed and arranged to permit the projection automatically to lock the slider when the pull is released from any operating position.
13. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a body portion movable along the fastener elements, a locking member pivoted on a transverse axis to the slider, a locking pojection on said member movable relative to the slider into and out of engagement with the fastener elements, means including a spring acting on said locking member and tending normally to retain said locking projection in engagement with the fastener elements, and a pull member connected to said locking member for actuating the slider and arranged to release said locking member when the pull is actuated to open the fastener.
14. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a body portion wider at its rear end than at its front end, a locking member pivoted to said slider body on a transverse axis and having a locking projection movable relative to the slider into and out of locking engagement with said fastener elements, a spring carried by the slider and bearing on said locking member on the opposite side of said pivot from said locking projection and normally tending to hold said locking projection in engagement with the fastener elements, and a pull member operatively connected to said locking member and arranged to release the same from locking engagement when said pull member is actuated to open the fastener.
l5. A slider for multiple interlocking fasteners comprising a channeled body member movable along the fastener elements, a locking member movably mounted on said slider and having a projection movable into and out of a position obstructing the slider channel, a wire spring extending longitudinally of said slider body and anchored therein at one end and at its other end engaging said locking member to hold the same normally in locking position, and a pull member attached to said locking member for actuating the slider and simultaneously releasing said locking member from locking engagement against the tension of said spring when a pulling force is applied thereto in opening the fastener.
