Y., assigner to General Electric Company, a corporation of New York Application August 26, 1931, Serial Nrn-559,519
4 Claims.
My invention relates to refrigerating machines,
and more particularly air-cooled machines of the' The object of my invention is to provide an iml proved construction of an air-cooled refrigerating machine for effectively dissipating heat from the casing and the condenser. I accomplish this by providing a refrigerating machine including an enclosing casing, and a condenser extending 15 about the casing and including a hermetically sealed container having a heat conducting liquid therein, which is constructed in such manner that liquid convection currents are produced to dissipate heat from the casing and the condenser.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the following description proceeds, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
For a better understanding of my invention reference may be had to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is an elevation view, partly in section, of a refrigerating machine embodying my invention taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a hollow fin taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, I have illustrated a refrigerating machine embodying my invention comprising a casing 1 provided with a base 2 secured thereto and having a motor 3 and compressor 4 arranged therein which are supported on springs 5 and arranged above a body of lubricating oil 6 in the base. The compressed refrigerant is discharged from the compressor 4 into the casing and flows therefrom through a connection 7 into a condenser having a pipe coil 8 or other suitable refrigerant containing chamber extending about the casing 1, in which the refrigerant is cooled and condensed. The condensed refrigerant flows from the condenser, under the control of float valve 9, through a pipe 10 into an evaporator 11 which is secured to a hollow base 12 removably supported on the top of a refrigerating cabinet 13. The vaporized refrigerant is withdrawn from the evaporator 11 by the compressor 4 through pipe 14 where it is again compressed to repeat the refrigerating cycle In accordance with my invention, I provide an improved construction of an air cooled refrigerating machine for effectively dissipating heat from the compression casing 1 and the condenser 8 ex- I tending about the casing. I accomplish this by providing a hermetically sealed container or jacket 15 having a heat conducting liquid 16 therein .to produce liquid convection currents to dissipate heat from the casing 1 and the condenser coil 8. 'Ihe hermetically sealed jacket includes 65 a body 17 provided with hollow fins 18 thereon which are secured at their lower ends at 19 to the outer edge of an annular metallic band 20 bent outwardly from the wall of the casing at 21 and 22 and secured thereto at 23 to form the bottom 70 of the jacket, and the body is closed at the top by a cap 24 secured at 25 to the upper ends of the fins. The condenser pipe coil 8 extending about the casing is supported in the lower portion of the jacket 15 by clamps 26 spaced about the inner 75 wall of the body 17, and the jacket is -lled with the heat conducting liquid 16, such as a solution of potassium carbonate and water, which is noncorrosive, so as to avoid rusting and deterioration of the jacket 15 and casing 1, and to prevent the 80 formation of scale on the surface of the condenser pipe coil 8. The heating of the liquid in the jacket by the casing and condenser and the cooling of the liquid in the hollow air cooled ins produces liquid convection currents in the jacket as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In this manner effective air cooling of the machine is obtained by having a good heat conducting medium transfer heat from the casing and condenser to the hollow n's which form heat dis- 90 sipating channels having a large external surface area over which the air circulates. Furthermore, this construction results in very quiet operation as the noise of the machine is muffled by the liquid in the jacket.
I ,prefer to make the hermetically sealed jacket 15 by bending a sheet of metal in zig-zag shape to form the hollow fins 18. After I form the zigzag plate in this way I bend it into an annular K form and secure the ends thereof together by 100 welding as indicatedat 27, and secure the upper 26. After the cylindrical body is closed atthe 110.
bottom by welding it at 19 to the outer edge of an annular band 20, which is secured to the casing at 23, I secure the lower end of the condenser top of the body 17 is closed by a cap 24 to form a hermetically sealed jacket.
The casing 1 and jacket 15 are supported by attaching the annular metallic band 20, which is secured at 23 to the Wall of the casing above a body of lubricating oil 6, to the upwardly flared edge 33 of an opening 34 in the hollow base 12. This manner of supporting the casing to conductively isolate the portion of the casing containing the body of lubricant from the supporting structure is described and claimed in my application, Serial No. 543,406,1lled June l0, 1931.
'Ihe foregoing described improved construction of an air cooled refrigerating machine eHectively dissipates heat from the compression casing and the condenser coil because during the operation of the machine the casing and condenser coil become heated whereas the hollow ns are coooled by the air iiowing over the external surfaces thereof, which ow is induced by natural draft, although forced air circulation may be used if desired. As a result the temperature liderence between the condenser and compression casing and the hollow iins produces liquid convection currents in the liquid contained in the jacket in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Inthis way heat is transferred from the condenser coil and the casing to the air circulating over the ns by the circulating liquid in the jacket and the hns which have a large external surface area presented to the circulating air.
Modifications of the particular embodiment of my invention which I have disclosed will occur to those skilled in the art, but li do not desire my invention to be limited to the particular arrangement shown andv described, and I intend in the following claims to cover all modications thereof which do not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent er" the United States is:
1. In a refrigerating machine, a cas, a condenser comprising a side wall of zig-zag form hermetically sealed to said casing and for a container, said side wall constituting vertical hollow ns communicating with the container and surrounding said casing, a chamber adapted to contain refrigerant arranged in said container and extending about said casing, said container having a heat conducting liquid therein to dissipate heat. from said refrigerant chamber and said casing.
2. In a refrigerating machine including an enclosing casing, a condenser including a jacket hermetically sealed to said casing and having a plurality of vertical heat dissipating channels spaced apart from each other and surrounding said casing, said channels being in open communication with said jacket', and a chamber adapted to contain refrigerant arranged within said jacket, said jacket having a heat conducting liquid therein to produce vertical liquid convection currents over the surface of said refrigerant containing chamber and said casing to dissipate heat from said chamber and said casing.
3. In a refrigerating machine including an enclosing casing, a condenser including a container hermetically sealed to said casing and provided with a plurality of vertical hollow fins thereon. spaced apart from each other and surrounding said casing, said hollow fins communieating with said container, and a pipe Acoil adapted to contain refrigerant arranged about said casing and within said container, said container having a heat conducting liquid therein to produce vertical liquid convection currents over said pipe coil and said casing to dissipate heat from said pipe coil and said casiifig.v
d. In a refrigerating machine including an enclosing casing, a condenser including a container hermetically sealed to said casing and surrounding said casing, said container being provided with a plurality of vertical hollow spaced apart fins on the side wall thereof, said hollow iins counicating with said container, and a pipe coil adapted to contain refrigerant arranged about the inner portion of said hollow hns, said container having a heat conducting liquid therein to produce vertical liquid convection currents in said tins and over said pipe coil and said casing to dissipate heat from said pipe coil and said casing.
