My invention relates to air-cooled condens= are for refrigerating machines.
it has generally been the practice, hereto: fore, to use piping or tubing of coil shape or zigzag form for the condenser of refrigerating machines. In such condensers the refrigerant flowing through the piping is cooled and condensed by the circulation of air, which is induced either by forced or natgg ural draft.

T he object of my invention is to provide an improved condenser of this type having a fiuid passageway provided with a heat dissipating surface for efi'ectively cooling and condensing the refrigerant flowing through the passageway.
Further objects and advantages of my 1nvention will become apparent as the following'description proceeds, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention Wlll be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
For a better understanding of my invention, reference may be had to the following description taken in connection with the/accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a refrigerating machine embodying my invention, and .Fig. 2 is a perspective view of parts of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown my invention in connection with a compression refrigerating machine of the general construction described in my United States Letters Patent No. 1,136,635, granted November 19, 1929 to the same assigneeljas. this invention; This machine comprises cooling the refrigerant and. removing the heat from the casing 1 by the circulation of air 1nduced by natural draft. The refrigerant is condensed in the passageway 5 and fiows therefrom, under the control of a float valve indicated at 7, into an evaporator 8 supported by the base 2. The motor in the enclosing casing 1 is controlled in response to the temperature of the evaporator 8 by a thermostatic device 9.
In accordance with my invention a fiuid passageway 5 forming the condenser is constructed in such manner that it cooperates with a strip of metal 10, which forms a heat dissipating surface for cooling the fluid flowing through the condenser. The passageway 5 is preferably made integral with the strip 10, although it may be secured thereto in any other suitable manner to form a unitary structure. I prefer to form the passageway 5 at one edge of the strip by folding over or bending the edge 11 upon itself and uniting it by a lap joint in any suitable manner, such as brazing or welding, to a portion of the strip as indicated at 12. The strip 10 with the passageway 5 is vformed into a helical coil with the passageway 5 at the outer edge, and the inner edge 14 is secured into downwardly slanting notches 15 at the outer ends of the fins. @ne end of the fluid passageway is connected to the compressor casing as indicated at 4, and the other end-thereof to the float valve 7.
In this construction, the helical strip 10 slopes downwardly from the inner to the outer edge, that is, it slopes downwardly in the direction away from the casing. The

By sloping the strip 10 downwardly in the direction away from the casin cool air is drawn from the air surrounding't e condenser and passes upwardly between all ofthe spaces of the helical strip 10, as well as passing upwardly through the channels 16 formedb the fins 6 between the" casing l and the hello 10. In'this manner a condenser is obtained which can readily be made from a strip of metal. The strip of metal having a fluid passageway at one edge thereof provides a rigid and durable condenser construction which can be formed to any shape desired, and the increased heat dissipating surface formed by the strip lO eflectively cools the refrigerant flowing through the passageway.
Although I have shown my improved aircooled condenser in connection with a compression refrigerating machine, I do not desire my invention to be limited to the par-.
ticular arrangement set forth, and I intend in the succeeding claims to cover all modifications which do not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention. 1
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
l. A condenser for a refrigerating machine including a strip of metal provided with a fluid passageway at one edge thereof, said stri serving as a heat dissipating surface for coo ing the fluid flowing through said passageway. I
2. A condenser for a refrigerating machine including a strip of metal having one portion thereof bent upon itself and united to another portion of said strip to form a fluid passageway, said other portion extending from said passageway to form a heat dissipating surface for cooling the fluid flowing through said' passageway.
3. An air-cooled condenser for a refrigerating machine including a supporting member, a plurality of heat dissipating elements arranged about said supporting member, and a helical strip of metal arranged about said heatdissipating elements and cooperating with a fluid passageway in heat exchange relation therewith, said helical strip being secured at the inner edge thereof to the outwardly extending portions of said heat dis sipating elements in heat exchange relation therewith.
4. An'air-cooled condenser for a refrigerating machine including a supporting member, a plurality of heat dissipating elements arranged about said supporting member, and a helical strip of metal arranged about said heat dissipatlng elements and provided with a fluid passageway at the outer edge thereof, the inner edge of said helical strip being secured in heat exchange relation to the outwardly extending portions of said heat dissipating elements.
5. An air-cooled condenser for a refrigerating machine including a supporting member, a plurality of heat dissipating elements arranged about said supporting member, and-a helical strip'of metal having one portion thereof bent upon itself and united to another portion of said strip to form a fluid passageway, the inner edge of said strip being secured to the outwardly extending portions of said heat dissipating elements in heat exchange relation therewith.
6. An air-cooled condenser for a refrigerating machine including a supporting member, a plurality of heat dissipating elements arranged about said supporting member, and a helical strip of metal secured in heat exchange relation at the inner edge thereof to the outer ends of said fins and having the outer edge thereof folded over and united to a portion of said strip to form a fluid passageway.
7. A refrigerating machine including a casing constituting a refrigerant chamber, a plurality of fins arranged about said casing, and a helical strip of metal arranged about said fins and cooperating with a fluid passageway in heat exchange relation therewith, said helical strip being secured in heat exchange relation at the inner edge thereof to the outer ends of said fins.
8. A refrigerating machine includin a casing constituting a refrigerant cham er, a plurality of fins arranged about said casing, and a helical strip of metal arranged about said fins and provided with a fluid passageway at the outer edge thereof, the inner edge of said helical strip being secured in heat exchange relation to the outer ends of said fins.

A refrigerating machine including a casing constituting a refrigerant chamber, a plurality of fins arranged about said casing, and a helical strip of metal secured in heat exchange relation at the inner edge thereof to the outer ends of said fins and having ,the outer edge thereof folded over and united to a portion of said strip to form a fluid passageway.

In a refrigerating machine,'a casing, heat dissipating elements arranged about said casing, a helical strip of metal surrounding said casing having a fluid passageway forming a condenser at the outer edge thereof, said helical strip sloping downwardly from the inner to the outeredge thereof and secured in heat exchange relation at the inner edge thereof to the outwardly extending portions of said heat dissipating elements.
13. A refrigerating machine comprising a substantially vertical casing, fins arranged about said casing, and a helical strip of metal arranged about said casing and provided with a fluid passageway at the outer edge thereof, said helical strip sloping downwardly from the inner to the outer edge thereof and secured in heat exchange relation at the inner edge thereof to the outer ends of said fins.
