Pivoted on the lower part of the machine frame at 47 is an arm 48 extending upwardly in front of the outer end of the pin or rod 43. This lever below its pivot is provided with an extension or tail 49 adapted to be engaged by a cam 50 mounted on a shaft51 carried by the frame of the machine and which shaft carries a hand crank 52. Rotation of this crank will cause the cam 50 to force the'tail 49 of the lever or arm 48 outwardly against thefaction of a spring 53 moving the upper end of the lever inwardly to force the rod or pin 43 inwardly and hence move the sleeve 36 to the left, as viewed in Fig. 3, permitting the key 37 to engage the slot 39 in the'shaft 14 to couple the sleeve 35 and hence roller 16 to the shaft.
Beyond the rollers 33 and Hand substantially in line with the top thereof is a plate 54 which is adapted to receive the labels as they are fed forward from the stack 2 and pass along this plate 7 v to be picked up by a roller 55 on sleeve 21 and a small roller 56 mounted at theunderside of plate 54. The plate 54 constitutes the cover plate for a glue pot G. I
The glue pot G alsomounts a gluing roller 57. This roller is mounted on a shaft-5B provided at its outer end with a gear 59, meshing with pinions 60 and 61 on the outer ends of the shafts for guide rollers 62 and 63, respectively. The shaft for the guide roller 63 carries at its other end the driven pulley 28 already referred to. This provides a drive for the gluing roller 57 as well as for the rollers 62 and 63. 3

In operation it will be seen that rotation of the motor 31 will drive the large pulley 29 and through the gears 24, 23 and 22 rotate the shaft 14. It will be seen also that rotation of shaft 14 will drive feed roller 55; At the same time through the driving mechanism above described the gluing roller will be driven as well as guide rollers 62 and 63. When labels are to be fed from stack 2 the hand crank 52 is operated into position to depress pin 43 and through the yoke 46 etc. establish a driving connection between shaft 14 and feed roller 16. As each label is removed from the stack the stack automatically raises through the action of the spring 7. The uppermost label is advanced by rollers 16, 33 and 34 along the cover plate 54 until picked up by the rollers 55 and 56, these rollers advancing the label between the gluing roller 57 and the rollers 62 and 63 where the label receives its coating of adhesive. Each label as it passes through the gluing mechanism is stripped from the gluing roller by the stripping fingers 64.
The amount of glue on the gluing roller 57 may be regulated by a doctor plate 66. This plate is pivotally mounted on a rod 67 in the glue pot, a lever 68 being carried by this rod outside of the glue pot, the lower end of this lever being provided with a cam 69. A short rod 70 held against end movement passes through this cam and is provided with two springs 71 and 72, the former holding the cam follower 73 on this rod in engagement with the face of the cam at all times, while the latter prevents retraction of the rod 70 to the right, as viewed in Fig. 1. The outer end of the rod- 70 is provided with a dial 74. It will be apparent that by rotating this dial the cam follower 73 will push the lever 68 either to the left or right, thereby to vary the angle that the plate makes with the face of the gluing roller and hence to regulate the amount of glue or paste on the face of this roller.
What I claim is:
1. A label pasting machine comprising in combination a platform for receiving a stack of labels, racks from which the platform is suspended, a. feed roller for feeding labels successively from the top of the stack, spring actuated pinions engaging said racks to elevate the same together with the platform whereby the top of the stack of labels will be-maintained in contact withthe feed roller at all times, and vertically extending members adjustable laterally with respect to said platform to provide adjustable side guides for the labels on the platform.
2. A label pasting machine comprising in combination a platform for receiving a stack of labels, racks from which the platform'is suspended, a feed roller above the platform for feeding labels successively from the top of the stack, spring actuated pinions for actuating said racks to elevate the platform to maintain the label stack at all times in contact with the feed roller, and vertically extending members passing through the platform and adjustable laterally with respect thereto affording side guides for the labels on the platform.
3. A label pasting machine comprising in combination a platform for receiving a stack of labels, racks from which the platform is suspended, a feed roller above the platform for feeding labels successively from the top of the stack, spring actuated pinions cooperating with said racks for maintaining the label stack in engagement with the feed roller at all times, plates above the rack movable transversely of the label platform, a guide for said plates, and stack guides depending from said plates and passing through slots in the platform and movable with said plates foradjusting the apparatus to labels
