n invention relates to waists and more particularly to a means whereby a waist may be detachabl'y secured to another garment in a mannor to prevent tearing of thewaist structure on as to yieldably hold the two members together.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment or waist having an attaching means constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention secured thereto across the back from side seam to side seam.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken transversely of the garment and showing the manner of detachably mounting the attaching means on the garment.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Figure 2 but showing a modified form of this invention.

Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the letter W designates generally a waist and in the present instance is a waist of the blouse type which is provided intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof with a Waist band 10. Disposed about the front of the waist band are a plurality of buttons 11 which are secured to the exterior of the front half of the garment W, which is the conventional method.

This invention provides a means of relieving the sudden tension on the buttons on the rear of the waist band extending from side seam to side seam of the waist, which is accomplished by sewing or otherwise afiixing the buttons at the rear end of the waist to an elastic band in such position that they may be inserted through 1933, Serial No. 661,955'

buttonholes, in the waist, and the ends of said elastic band fastened on the side seams of the waist, position in the drawing, said elastic band pulling across the back of the child, and of such length and pulling the front of the waist fiat and tight across the chest and abdomen of the child, and permitting the buttons, when but toned through the trousers of the child to pullthe elastic through the buttonholes in the waist a sufficient distance to relieve the tension between waist and pants when the child stretches or bends over. This invention secures perfect form fitting of the entire front of the Waist, and relieves the severe tension on the rear buttons of the waist.

To this'end, I have provided an elongated strip 12 which is of elastic material having longitudinal yieldability and this elastic member 12 is provided at each end thereof with hooks 14 which are adapted to engage eyes 15 provided on the inner surface of the waist W upon the band 10 approximately at the side seams thereof.

The elastic 12 is preferably slightly shorter in normal length than the distance between the two eyes 15 secured to the waist band 10 so that when the strip of elastic 12 is in applied position on the body of the wearer, it will be stretched longitudinally and will have a tendency to maintain the front of the garment relatively fiat against the body.

The waistband 10 and the body of the waist W are provided at spaced intervals along the rear portion of the waist with buttonholes or openings 16 of a size such as to permit the passage therethrough of buttons 17 which are secured as by threads or stitching 18 to the elastic band 12. The buttons 17 are of a size to substantially cover up the buttonholes 16 so that the appearance from the exterior is that the buttons 17 are attached directly to the body of the waist or shirt W.

In the form of this invention shown in Figure 3, the waist W is provided at spaced intervals about the waist line defined by the Waistband 10 with a plurality of eyelets 19 of metal. The elastic band 12' has buttons 17' secured thereto as by threads or stitching 18' but in this modification, the buttons 17 are not adapted to pass through the openings of the eyelets 19. In this modification, the opposite ends of the band or elastic 12' are attached permanently as by stitching 20 to the inside of the Waistband 10.

In the use of this attaching means for attaching a waist or shirt to another garment, the buttons 1'? are passed through the buttonholes 16 and the hooks 14 are engaged with the eyes 15 secured to the inside of the waistband or reinforcing member 10. The additional garment may then be engaged with the buttons 17 which are positioned on the outside of the waist W and when any strain is applied to these garments such as to cause the garments to separate or to tend to separate, the strain will be borne by the buttons which will communicate the strain to the elastic 12, and this elastic will be pulled through the buttonholes, thereby permitting the two garments to partially separate under the applied strain. When the strain has been released, the elastic 12 will assume its normal position within the waist W and will draw the two garments together in a position so that the buttons 17 will substantially confront or overlie the buttonholes 16. When it is desired to Wash the Waist W, the elastic band 12 may be unhooked from the eyes 15 and the buttons 1'7 passed through the buttonholes 16, or the ends of the elastic may be looped and buttoned onto buttons sewed to the inside of the side seams of the waist.

In the modification shown in Figure 3, the elastic 12 is preferably of a washable type so that it will not be injured on account of contact with water or the like. In this modification, when the strain is applied to the buttons 17, the elastic band 12' will be drawn through the metal eyelets 19 and when the strain is removed, the band 12 will assume its normal position and pull the garments together and also pull the buttons 1'7 in overlying position over the metal eyelets 19.

It will be seen that I have provided a. Waist and attaching means therefor which acts to maintain the waist in neat condition and fiat against the body in the front, the elastic band pulling against the back of the wearer While the ends of the elastic band pull the sides of the waist band toward the back, thus always insuring that the waist front is held neatly and flatly to the body. Furthermore, the metal eyelets which may be employed and which are illustrated in Figure 3, being smoothly rounded, insure that the elastic band will slip easily through the eyelets.

It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim.

What is claimed is:-

A garment having a waist, a. waist band secured to the inner face of the waist adjacent the lower edge thereof and disposed around the rear portion of the waist band and terminating at the sides of the waist, said waist band and the waist having a plurality of circumferentially spaced button holes therethrough, eyes attached to the waist band at opposite sides of the waist, an elastic band having hooks adapted to engage in said eyes, the band when engaged with the eyes being under tension, and a plurality of buttons disposed over the button holes in the waist and having attaching means extending through the button holes of the waist band and to the elastic band and positively connected thereto against movement independent of the band whereby when strain is applied to said buttons, the elastic band will be drawn through said button holes and yieldabiy resist separation of the waist and a gar lent buttoned thereto.
