This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in radio receivers, and more particularly to a novel control for tuning and regulating volume.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a single control element which is operative to selectively control the tuning apparatus and volume control.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.

Figure 1 represents a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through a receiver, showing a volume control and tuning condensers assembled with the novel selective operating means.
Figure 2 represents a detailed sectional view through the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view showing the clutch means and the shaft arrangement.
Figure 4 represents an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view of the slidable element of the clutch.
Figure 5 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figure 1 that numeral 5 represents the front wall of a radio receiver cabinet. Numerals 6-'7 represent supporting plates through which the elongated tubular shaft 8 is journaled. The stator plates 9 are supported in the usual conventional manner, while the rotor plates 10 are secured to the aforementioned tubular shaft 8. There may be any number of these condensers controlled by the shaft 8, depending upon the type of radio receiver.
Numeral 11 represents a bracket secured to the plate 7 and this supports the volume control 12 and the receiver switch 13. A stub shaft 14 extends from the Volume control 12 through the bracket 11 and is equipped with a clutch plate 15 at its inner end. The opposed end of the shaft 8 which extends through the plate 7 is equipped with a clutch plate 16, while an elongated solid shaft 17, extending through the hollow shaft 8, is equipped with a hub structure 18 provided with a pair of clutch plates 19-20 for the corresponding clutch plates 1615, respectively. Each of these clutch plates 19-20 is provided with'a fric tional covering 21.
The opposite end of the solid shaft 17 extends through an opening 22 in the front wall 5 of the The knob 23 has a collar 24 and interposed between this collar 24 and the plate 6 is a coiled spring 25 which normally tends to urge the knob 23 outwardly of the wall 5 so as to normally maintain the clutch plate 19 engaged against the clutch plate 16. Thus the station selecting condensers are always connected with the knob 23 ready for actuation.
After the station has been selected, the knob is pushed inwardly and this results in the engagement of the clutch plate 20 against the clutch plate 15 and by holding the knob inwardly and rotating the same, the proper volume can be obtained, after which releasement of the knob disengages the clutch from the volume control.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
1. In combination, a station selecting condenser, a volume control, a hollow shaft to which the rotor plates of the condenser are secured, a clutch plate on the hollow shaft, a manually operative shaft extending through the said hollow shaft and being provided with a movable clutch element engageable with the clutch plate on the hollow shaft, a stub shaft for operating the volume control, said stub shaft being provided with a clutch plate and being located within the path of the said movable clutch element on the shaft extending through the said hollow shaft.
2. In combination, a station selecting condenser, a volume control, a hollow shaft to which the rotor plates of the condenser are secured, a clutch plate on the hollow shaft, a manually operative shaft extending through the said hollow shaft and being provided with a movable clutch element engageable with the clutch plate on the hollow shaft, a stub shaft for operating the volume control, said stub shaft being provided with a clutch plate and being located within the path of the said movable clutch element on the shaft extending through the said hollow shaft, and a spring for normally urging the internal shaft to a position maintaining the movable clutch element away from the volume control clutch plate.
