Application August 5, 1930, Serial No. 473,158
My present invention relates to a inforced concrete floor construction 1 Claim.
two-Way resystem, comels filled with terra cotta tile.
The main object of the invention is to simplify the method of construction and to obtain substantial savings of concrete material wasted in the present art.
In carrying out my invention I provide for the use of terra cotta tiles with closed as fillers between the reinforced set forth herein.
sides or ends concrete ribs In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of atypical square fioor panel, Figure 2 is a section through the panel and Figure 3 is an isometric view of one of the tile fillers with the voids shown by dotted. lines.
Figure 4 is a one-half transverse section of the tile taken on line 4 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section of the tile taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3, lo direction of the arrow.
oking in the Figure 6 is an enlarged section of the end of the tile.
In the typical floor structure main supporting girders are provided on the centre lines a-a formed of either steel, reinforced other similar material.
concrete or Concrete ribs 0 properly reinforced are arranged to span between the said girders in both directions of the span and on such centres as dictated by engineering requirements.
The tile fillers b are placed upon the forms both to create a mould for the pouring of the concrete, and to lighten the floor construction offering a fairly smooth surface on the top and bottom of the floor structure.
are assembled in the field from two or more pieces, which increases the cost of handling and results in an uneven surface in the finished structure.
This invention comprises the use of terra cotta tile units C having solid outside walls forming the top, bottom, sides and ends fully enclosing voids separated by a plurality of ribs.
The outer surfaces of this tile uni t are grooved or otherwise indented to create a bonding agent with the adjacent materials as shown at d in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
The outer walls of the tile and the inner intermediate ribs are of such thickness as required to develop the strength thereof while the size of the unit, particularly the depth and the number of intermediate ribs as well as the width and reinforcing of the concrete ribs are variable to the extent required to meet the dictates of engineering design.
In the manufacture of the tile, the ends of the voids are closed with walls before burning by a machine perfected to meet the requirements of this invention. The ends I are moulded as indictated in Figure 6 and are placed in the tile before burning in such manner that it is forced partly into the openings in the tile so as to hold it in position during burning.
The tile unit after the end walls are applied is processed in a kiln and as the tile is burnt, the end walls become an integral part of the tile.
It will be noted that by the use of this tile the unit is strengthened by having a continuous wall around all sides and that when placed in the floor structure it confines the concrete to the dimensions determined for the ribs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a concrete and tile floor construction of the character described, a tile unit filler having integral top, bottom, sides and ends, the enclosed voids being separated by a plurality of terra cotta reinforcing inner ribs, the parts assembled in their plastic form and made into an integral unit through subsequent burning, and indentations in the exterior surface of the unit to facilitate bondmg with the encasing material.
