Description
H. H. HARVEY. Bush-Hammer.
No. 196,449. Patented Oct. 23,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. HARVEY, OF AUGUSTA, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUSH-HAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,449, dated October 23, 1877; application filed September 18, 1877.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. HARVEY, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bush-Hammers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of the bush-hammers employed by sculptors and others in working and dressing stone; and the invention consists in hardening' the poll or head at the seat of the cutters, and providing it with removable dovetailed bars iitted in the head on each side to secure the ends of the cutting-*tools and strengthen the jaws of the head or poll, as fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the poll or head of the hammer, with the cutting-tools secured to the same 5 Fig. 2, a view ofthe edge of the same; Fig. 3, a section through the line x of Fig. '2.
rEhe letter A represents the head or poll, constructed with the usual recesses at opposite ends for the reception of the cutters, which are secured therein, as customary, by means of the screw-bolts B B. The central or solid part of the head or poll A is provided with the usual aperture or eye C for the insertion of a handle, and, in addition, with an aperture or eye, D, passing through the head at right angles to the eye C, through which the handle may be inserted in order to vary the position in which the hammer may be used.
The cutting tools or blades E are constructed as usual, and perforated to allow the clamping-bolt to pass through them, and the upper corners are cut away, as shown, forming recesses c, into which the removable dovetailed bars F F, which form the seats for the same, set when the cutting-blades are secured in the polli The said bars are secured in dovetailed recesses formed in the edges of the head or poll, at the ends of the recesses in which the cutting-tools are confined, in such position as to secure the ends of the blades in place. The head or poll is hardened around the seat or bearing of the cutting-tools, and in the vicinity of the dovetailed recesses, in order to increase its durability. The dovetailed bars, as thus constructed and secured, take the place of the ordinary gibs usually employed, and are free from the liability to break, which is a source of objection when such gibs are employed.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
The improvement in bush-hammers herein described, consisting in a hardened poll or head provided with dovetailed bars fitted in recesses ou each side, at the ends of the recesses in which the cutting-tools are held, to keep said tools in place and strengthen the jaws of the head or poll, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
HENRY H. HARVEY. Vit-nesses E. W. WHITEHoUsE, A. C. PERCIVAL.
