Description
June 5, 1934. J. SHMIGELL PICTURE ALBUM OF THE CHANGEABLE TYPE Filed June 16, 1933 Patented June 5, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Jakim Shmigcll, Rome, N. Y.
Application June 16, 1933, Serial No. 676,160
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in picture albums of the changeable type.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a changeable picture album of the above mentioned character including a double reel and web suitably carried by a removable frame whereby said picture strip or web may be removed from the housing for the purpose of adding or removing pictures or photographs.
A further object of this invention is to provide a changeable picture album of the above mentioned character including a casing having a hinged front wall provided with exposure openings so that the pictures on the web will be clearly visible through said casing.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a supporting frame for the double reel and web which may be easily removed from the housing by displacing the hinged front wall thereof.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means at the end of the picture web or strip for detachably securing the same to the winding reels in order that the strip may be removed so that another strip may be used in place thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide means connecting the reels together so that the reels will rotate in the same direction in unison when operated by means of a manual crank or thumb piece.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description taken with the drawing and forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the device embodying this invention illustrating the exposure opening in the front wall of the housing;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same showing the hinged front wall and the locking means therefor;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the picture album illustrating the hinged front wall removed for exposing the picture strip carrying frame and illustrating the manner in which the same is slidably received in the housing;
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view of the picture strip carrying frame illustrating the same removed from the housing and further showing the manner in which the picture strip is detachably secured to the rollers or reels;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the picture carrying frame illustrating the manner in which the spacing bars are connected thereto;
Figure 6 is a vertical enlarged cross-sectional view showing the manner in which the picture 55 strip carrying frame is supported in the housing and further illustrating the manner in which the picture strip reels are geared together to rotate in the same direction in unison; and
Figure 7 is an exploded view of one of the reels showing the same enlarged and partly in section to illustrate the manner in which the picture carrying strip is detachably secured thereto.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention and wherein like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character will generally be employed to designate a housing having a bottom wall 6, vertical side walls 7 which are rearwardly inclined providing parallel inclined edges 8 and 9 between which is secured a rear wall 10 similarly inclined and curved at the upper portion as at 11 to provide a top wall 12. Hingedly secured to the casing 5 is a front wall 13 by means of suitable hinges as at 14 and said front wall 13 is provided with vision openings 15 for exposing the pictures carried by the picture strips which will be hereinafter fully described. A locking hasp 16 is hinged to the front wall or cover 13 by means of a leaf plate 17 so that the hasp 16 may be positioned over a keeper 18 to accommodate a lock 19.
The construction of the housing makes it possible for the front wall 13- to be inclined rearwardly so that the observance openings 15 will be presented directly in line with the observers vision thereby preventing blurring effects.
A picture strip carrying frame is adapted to be removably placed within the housing 5 and in cludes a pair of spaced vertical plates 20 having parallel inclined edges 21 and 22 which are adapted to correspond in configuration with the side walls 7 of the housing 5, the side plates 20 are held in spaced relation by means of spacing rods 22a and 23, 24, 25 and 26 held in place by suitable nuts threaded on the ends thereof as shown clearly in Figure 5 as at 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31. the spacing bars 22 to 26 inclusive are provided with a rotatably mounted sleeve over which is passed the picture carrying strip.
Mounted between the side plates 20 are strip carrying reels 33 and 34, one of which is mounted in the top of the frame while the other is mounted in the lower portion of the frame. The reels as shown in Figure '7 are constructed of a tubular portion 35 having end flanges 36 and provided with supporting pins 37 at opposite ends thereof which arereceived in openings 38 formed in the side frame plates 20. Formed on the end of each of the reels is a gear wheel 39 adapted to mesh with an interposed gear wheel 40 as shown in Each of Figure 6 which is carried by a spindle 41 supported in openings 42 in the side walls or plates 20 of the frame. One end of the spindle 41 is squared as at 42 so that it may align with an opening 43 in the side Wall '7 of t e housing 5 to be engaged by a finger piece 44.
Each of the reels 35 are provided with bosses 45 located adjacent the end flanges 36 and having openings 46 receiving the ends of flexible bars 4'7 to which the end of the picture strip 48 is secured.
The picture strip 43 is preferably formed of a flexible fabric on which may be placed photographs 49 so as to be held in place by strips 50 stitched to the flexible fabric 48 or sewn in any suitable manner.
The strip 48 is adapted to pass over the rollers 32 carried by the rods 23, 22a, 24, 25 and 26 whereupon it is returned to the lower reel 34.
The photographs 49 may be so arranged on the flexible fabric 48 as to align with the vision openlugs 15 when the finger piece 44 is turned which causes the rotation of the gear 41 and the movement of the picture strip 48 by means of the picture carrying reels 33 and 34.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
A picture exhibitor of the character described comprising a casing having a hinged front wall, a picture strip supporting frame removably mounted in the casing, a pair of reels mounted in the frame, and a picture strip having its ends respectively secured to the reels, the connection between the picture strip and reels including a resilient bar carried by each end of the picture strip and sockets on the reels arranged a distance apart less than the length of the resilient bar with the latter flexed for shortening during mounting thereof in the sockets.
