Description

No.196,l76.
W. H. AHRENS. Cheese-Press.
Patented Oct..16, I877;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ILAHRENS, OF SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 96,176, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 4, 1877 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY AHRENS, of the town and county of San Luis Obispo, and State of California, have invented an Improved Cheese-Press; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in presses, and I have shown it as applied to a cheese-press.
It consists of a frame with which the-board or platen moves up and down, carrying with it the cheese or article to be pressed, with its surrounding hoop and pressing-board. The platen-frame is suspended from a lever which has of angle-pieces, which clasp the corner-posts,
and cross-bars at the top unite these posts, as shown.
Arod, D, extends from one of these cross-bars to the other, above the middle of the platen B, and a lever, E, is pivoted upon this bar, so that one end stands over the platen, while the other extends out to one side of the frame. This outer end is pinned to a vertical bar, F, so as to be adjusted up or down, and the bar F is supported upon an arm, G, at the bottom of the frame A. The inner end of the lever E has an arm, H, extending from it to a pressing block or cover, I, which fits inside the ho'op J, surrounding the cheese.
It will be manifest that when the cheese or material to be pressed is placed within the hoop J with the cover I over it, the arm H may be made to rest upon the top of this cover, when the weight of the platen, guides, and substance to be pressed will depress the platen and frame. As theouter end of the lever E is stationary, the action will be that of a thirdclass lever, and the weight will act upon the arm H with great force, this, in tiuni, being transmitted to the cheese itself. The action of the press will be automatic, because the pressure follows on as fast as the material is compressed, without any attention on the part of the operator. 7
A Windlass-shaft, K, extends across the upper part of the main frame, and a rope, L, extends from this Windlass to the lever E, at or near its point of suspension from the rod D. By means of a crank this windlass may be turned, and the pressure taken oil at any time. It also serves to hold the arm I-I away from the cover I until everything is in readiness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the movable platen and frame B 0, adjustable and pivoted lever E, rod
D, bar H, and adjustable support F, the several parts relatively arranged to each other and the frame A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
